Laura Kidd is a record producer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist releasing music and podcast episodes as Penfriend, and formerly known as She Makes War. After releasing four full length albums between 2010 and 2018, She Makes War was formally disbanded in December 2019. Kidd cited a desire to “keep putting out the most honest, thoughtful and brave music I have inside me long into the future” and launched new music project Penfriend in May 2020, with accompanying weekly podcast series Attention Engineer. Penfriend Multi- disciplinary solo project Penfriend launched on May 1st, 2020 with an invitation to join The Correspondent's Club, Kidd's handmade member's club set up to provide a friendly online space for music fans, powering the making of new music and podcast episodes in return for member perks.

Cellanus (fl. ca. 675-706) was the abbot of Péronne in Picardy. At the time, Péronne was known as Perrona Scottorum on account of its fame as a home to Irish peregrini. He was a penfriend and correspondent of Aldhelm, and it is from a surviving letter that much of our knowledge of Cellanus originates.

She later became a programme presenter on BBC Radio 2, where a twice-weekly programme ran for five years. From 1977 on Radio 2 she presented "Julie Dawn's Penfriend Programme", which was very successful, running for 10 years. It was broadcast three times a week: people who lived alone were put in touch with others in similar circumstances. Julie Dawn was married twice; her second husband David died in 1992.

In association with the Royal National Institute of Blind People, it developed The PenFriend, a device that allows blind people to attach and read audio labels on everyday objects. Its Talking Phonics was the winner of the 2010 Educational Resource Awards (ERA), Best Early Years Educational Resource with ICT.

In January 1821, on his return from Naples, Paganini met Rossini again in Rome, just in time to become the substitute conductor for Rossini's opera Matilde di Shabran, upon the sudden death of the original conductor. Paganini's efforts earned gratitude from Rossini. Paganini met Berlioz in Paris, and was a frequent correspondent as a penfriend. He commissioned a piece from the composer, but was not satisfied with the resultant four-movement piece for orchestra and viola obbligato, Harold en Italie.

Childs wrote a statement in July 1986 when he was held at HMP Winchester, admitting that Pinfold was "only convicted because of my perjured evidence". In 1997, The People reported that Childs had written to a penfriend through the Prison Reform Trust, describing how he dismembered the bodies of his victims and burned them on a fireplace in his council flat in Poplar. When he was at Long Lartin and then Frankland Prison, County Durham, Childs was interviewed by the Daily Mirror newspaper, who reported on the front page in 1998 that he had confessed to committing five more murders.
