When physicians or dentists check the database and see a worrisome pattern of dispensed opioids, they can deny or change a prescription, screen for an opioid or other substance use disorder, and even counsel the patient to seek other forms of pain management or addiction treatment, if warranted.

Letters To the Editor: Re "Training Is Weighed for Opioid Prescribers" (Business Day, May 3): As a physician who specializes in pain management, I find it sad that calls for mandated physician education on prescribing opioids are primarily couched in terms of preventing opioid abuse rather than in improving care for patients with pain.

They also suggest that all women be tested for pregnancy upon entering a correctional facility, that correctional officers and all prison staff members be trained specifically in the unique medical and emotional needs of pregnant and laboring women, and that women be able to move unrestricted during labor for the purpose of healthy birth and pain management.

The October draft report outlines what research is needed to combat the opioid crisis in the United States, identifying seven key areas, which cover pretty much anything you could think of related to opioids: the biology of opioid addiction and pain, social factors, pain management, preventing addiction, treatment, overdose prevention, and the impact of opioid addiction on communities.

In fact, certain doctors who are currently flogging OxyContin abroad—"pain ambassadors," they are called—used to be on Purdue's payroll as advocates for the drug in the U.S. The Times report described Joseph Pergolizzi, Jr.—a Florida doctor who runs a pain-management clinic and hawks a pain-relieving cream of his own invention on cable TV—giving paid talks in places like Brazil about the merits of OxyContin.

It also highlighted some of the companies that Ginkgo has started to invest in, like Motif, which is helping foster a lot more companies like Impossible Foods and Beyond Meat by working on the plant-based proteins that provide that meat-like flavor, and Cronos, which is looking to create rare strains of cannabinoids in the lab, some of which are being researched as a pain management solution for chronically ill patients.
