Poems (New York, 1865) was Bolton's first collection of poetry, followed by The Life and Poems of Sarah T. Bolton (Indianapolis, 1880), and Songs of a Life-Time (Indianapolis, 1892). Paddle Your Own Canoe, and Other Poems, published posthumously in 1897, is largely a reprint of Songs, with the addition of a few poems. Bolton's poem, "Paddle Your Own Canoe," her most famous poem, was later set to music. "I Cannot Call Her Mother" and "A Reply to Katy Darling" are among her other musical compositions.

Offerman has released three semi-autobiographical publications: the first, Paddle Your Own Canoe: One Man's Fundamentals for Delicious Living was released in 2013; his second, Gumption: Relighting the Torch of Freedom with America's Gutsiest Troublemakers, was released May 26, 2015; the third, Good Clean Fun: Misadventures in Sawdust at Offerman Woodshop, was released October 18, 2016.

Over the years Bolton's writings were mostly forgotten. Two of her best-known poems are "Indiana," a poetic tribute to her longtime home, and "Paddle Your Own Canoe." Bolton typically received little to no compensation for her work, although the Cincinnati Commercial once paid $15 for three of her poems. Several collections of her poetry were also published.

Olive Inez Downing (c. 1888–1963) proposed that the Indiana Branch of the League of American Pen Women commission a sculpture honoring Sarah T. Bolton and arrange to install in the State House. Sarah T. Bolton was known as the "Pioneer Poet Laureate of Indiana." Her poems are published in Poems (1865), Life and Poems of Sarah Tittle Bolton (1880), and Songs of a Lifetime (1892). Her most well known poem is “Paddle Your Own Canoe.” Emma Sangernebo, née Elyes (1877–1969), was a well-known local artist trained at Herron Art School, Indianapolis.

Sarah Tittle Bolton née Barrett (December 18, 1814 – August 4, 1893) was an American poet and women's rights activist who is considered an unofficial poet laureat of Indiana. Bolton collaborated with Robert Dale Owen during Indiana's 1850–1851 constitutional convention to include the recognition of women's property rights in the revised state constitution of 1851. Bolton was little known outside of Indiana, and her writings have been mostly forgotten. "Paddle Your Own Canoe" (1850), her most famous poem, and "Indiana," a poetic tribute to her longtime home, are among her best-known poems.

The group teamed with both a Scandinavian and a Polish dance group in March 2003. Held at Hillsboro High School, "Many Voices, One World" featured folk songs sung by the Oregon Chorale with the two dance groups performing traditional dances. In April 2005, the group premiered a musical comedy written by Linda Needham entitled "The Great Lewis & Clark Extravaganza of 1905 or Paddle Your Own Canoe". The musical was set at the 1905 Lewis and Clark Centennial Exposition in Portland. The group’s Christmas concert in December 2005 featured songs in Czech, Polish, Russian, and Latvian in addition to English. To prepare for a tour in Europe, the Oregon Chorale performed folk songs from Ireland and Scotland for St. Patrick’s Day in 2007.

Rovering to Success sets out a philosophy for living in the adult world rather than being an instructional handbook. It is written in the style of advice from a father or wise uncle, indeed some commentators have suggested that it was partly intended for future reading by Baden-Powell's son, Peter, who was nine years old when it was published.Jeal p. 523 In common with his other handbooks, The theme of Rovering to Success is taken from the popular 19th-century song; “Never sit down with a tear or a frown, but paddle your own canoe”, which was written by the American poet Sarah T. Bolton in 1850 but is not attributed. The first chapter is entitled How to be happy though rich – or poor is an overview of Baden-Powell’s ideas for leading a happy and fulfilled life, enlivened with anecdotes from his military career and quotes from personalities as diverse as Abraham Lincoln, Mark Twain and Tennyson. The next five chapters are described as ”Rocks you are likely to bump on” (while paddling your own canoe).
