Apotropaic carving on a door at the Priest House West Hoathly There are witch marks scratched into wood in several places in the house including the front door and on the beam above the main fireplace. She attended the University of Kentucky from 1992 until 1996 and has since been named to the UK's Athletic Hall of Fame. Hansen won a total of eight national titles and nine Southeastern Conference championships during her collegiate career.
Yang Bo (; born July 8, 1973 in Ningbo, Zhejiang) is a Chinese gymnast. She is widely regarded as one of the greatest gymnasts ever on the balance beam, for which she created a move known as the "Yang Bo", which is rated as a D element in the Code of Points. Although widely renowned for her work on beam, Yang often had difficulty landing her dismounts which prevented her from medalling at several major competitions. She competed at the 1992 Summer Olympics, placing 25th in the all-around and 7th on the beam.

Having recently become world champion, Americans had high hopes for Zmeskal and the U.S. team heading the Barcelona 1992 Olympic Games, with Zmeskal earning the cover of both Time and Newsweek magazines before the Games. Zmeskal added two more World titles at the individual apparatus World Championships in Paris, winning gold on the beam and the floor. In the U.S. National Championships and Olympic Trials, Zmeskal battled an emerging Shannon Miller, with Miller defeating Zmeskal at the Trials. Zmeskal fell off the balance beam during her compulsory routine on the first night of competition.
The pilot would descend to a specified minimum descent altitude (MDA), and if the airport was not in sight within a specified time (based on ground speed), a missed approach procedure would be initiated. William McNaught patented a compound beam engine in 1845. On a beam engine of the standard Boulton & Watt design he placed a high-pressure cylinder, on the opposite side of the beam to the existing single cylinder, where the water pump was normally fitted. This had two important effects: it massively reduced the pressure on the beam, and the connecting steam pipe, being long, acted as an expansive receiver – the element missing in the Woolf design. This modification could be made retrospectively, and engines so modified were said to be "McNaughted".
An Avenger flying from Kitkun Bay became unable to maintain altitude while attempting an emergency landing on 5 September. The torpedo bomber crashed into the sea as the pilot turned to clear the ship's stern, and Fullam (DD-474) raced over and rescued all three men, and returned the shaken but uninjured crew to the carrier within the hour. Before dawn on the 7th, Kitkun Bay detected a small Japanese patrol craft 3,000 yards on the beam. One of the destroyers intercepted and investigated the vessel, and the convoy continued the voyage.
He rebuilt the central hall with a stair of finely worked kauri timber, with a notable stained glass window by William Montgomery depicting a hunting scene above, and tiled fireplace with beaten copper panel depicting the Spencer family crest. A Yurchenko loop is a skill performed on the balance beam in women's artistic gymnastics. It is named after Soviet gymnast Natalia Yurchenko, who originated and competed with the element in the early 1980s. In a standard Yurchenko loop, the gymnast stands sideways on the beam, dives backwards into a back handspring (the "loop"), grasps the beam, performs a back hip circle and ends up in a front support position, resting on their hands. French gymnast Elvire Teza performed a variation of the Yurchenko loop with a full twisting handspring in the 1990s.
Without her impressive performance at the World Gymnastics Championships, she might not have made it to the Olympics the next year. Sydney, Australia was the site of the 2000 Olympic Games, and the location of the highest point in Lobaznyuk's career. She was also perhaps the top gymnast on the Olympic team, surpassing Svetlana Khorkina and Elena Zamolodchikova, the best known members of the team at the time. She won a pair of silver medals (on the beam and in the team final) and a bronze on the vault.

Larisa Leonidovna Petrik (; born 28 August 1949) is a former Soviet gymnast and Olympic champion. Petrik competed at the 1966 World Championships where she shared in the team silver medal (gold went to the Czechoslovaks) and earned an individual bronze medal on the beam. She also competed at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City, where she received a gold medal in floor exercise (shared with Věra Čáslavská), a gold medal in team combined exercises, and a bronze medal in balance beam. Her gold medal on floor was very controversial because originally, Čáslavská won outright.

Originally constructed in Philadelphia for George W. Aspinwall, brother of William Henry Aspinwall, president of the Pacific Mail Steamship Company. Captain Sutter was a single engine, stern-wheel steamer, 90 feet long, 18 feet on the beam, and a 6 foot deep hold. The inscribed beam and gable fragments contain a Latin language reference to Branimir as ("the count Branimir… considered duke of the Croats…"). The first two words are inscribed on the beam fragment, and the rest on the wide and tall gable fragment. From 1975 to 1976 he worked at the University of Freiburg and the Brookhaven National Laboratory (New York), In 1977, he joined DESY in Hamburg to work on the beam optics of the PETRA storage ring. On 13 June 1923, Captain Ernest J. King, Commander, Submarine Division Three (later Fleet Admiral and Commander in Chief, U.S. Fleet, during World War II), suggested to the Secretary of the Navy (Bureau of Navigation) that a distinguishing device for qualified submariners be adopted. He submitted a pen-and-ink sketch of his own showing a shield mounted on the beam ends of a submarine, with dolphins forward of, and abaft, the conning tower. In 1992, work began on the BEAM virtual machine (VM) which compiles Erlang to C using a mix of natively compiled code and threaded code to strike a balance between performance and disk space. According to Armstrong, the language went from lab product to real applications following the collapse of the next- generation AXE telephone exchange named AXE-N in 1995. As a result, Erlang was chosen for the next asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) exchange AXD.
The Hong–Ou–Mandel effect is a two-photon interference effect in quantum optics which was demonstrated in 1987 by three physicists from the University of Rochester: Chung Ki Hong, Zhe Yu Ou and Leonard Mandel. The effect occurs when two identical single-photon waves enter a 1:1 beam splitter, one in each input port. When the temporal overlap of the photons on the beam splitter is perfect, the two photons will always exit the beam splitter together in the same output mode. The photons have a 50:50 chance of exiting either output mode.

Pockels cells are used in a variety of scientific and technical applications. A Pockels cell, combined with a polarizer, can be used for switching between no optical rotation and 90° rotation, creating a fast shutter capable of "opening" and "closing" in nanoseconds. The same technique can be used to impress information on the beam by modulating the rotation between 0° and 90°; the exiting beam's intensity, when viewed through the polarizer, contains an amplitude-modulated signal. This modulated signal can be used for time-resolved electric field measurements when a crystal is exposed to an unknown electric field.
Shapiro was a three-time U.S. senior elite national champion, a senior US Women's National Gymnastics Team member from 2006-11. In the fall of 2008, Shapiro competed in the 2008 Pan American Individual Event Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Rosario, Argentina, where she won gold on the beam and uneven bars. She won the bars at the 2008 City of Jesolo Trophy (Italy) Grand Prix. Basic scheme of a gravitational wave suspended interferometric detector like Virgo (labels are in French) Virgo is a Michelson interferometer whose mirrors are suspended. A laser is divided into two beams by a beam splitter tilted by 45 degrees. The two beams propagate in the two perpendicular arms of the interferometer, are reflected by mirrors located at the end of the arms and recombine on the beam splitter, generating interferences which are detected by a photodiode. Nelson's manager Mark Rye negotiated with Harvest to buy back some of the unreleased songs for Nelson to release under his own name on his own label, Cocteau Records, which Nelson and Rye had set up. In the Summer of 2012, Rebecca Bross competed in the Olympic Trials in hopes of making the Olympic team for London. She competed on the beam and uneven bars, finishing in last place on both. Despite an excellent routine on the first night of competition, Rebecca fell three times off the bars on Night 2 and was instructed by her coach to stop mid-routine. As a result of her low scores, particularly on the uneven bars — an area in which National Team Coordinator Márta Károlyi stated that the women's team would need strong competitors — Rebecca did not make the main Olympic team, nor was she named as an alternate.
This principle has many applications in physics and engineering because many physical systems can be modeled as linear systems. In June, Bulimar underwent surgery on her right knee, causing her to miss the European Games. She returned to competition in September at a friendly meet between Romania and France where she helped her team to the gold medal, competing on bars and beam, and performing her floor routine on a tumble track to facilitate her recovery. At the Romanian Championships at the end of September, she won the bronze medal in the all- around competition along with a silver on the beam. She followed this with good results at the Novara Cup in Novara, Italy, where the Romanian team triumphed over Italy, Belgium and Spain, and Bulimar individually finished fourth and took the bronze medal on beam.
Booloominbah possesses State aesthetic and technical heritage significance in the innovative manner in which Horbury Hunt adapted the country house form and Arts and Crafts style to Australia's climate. Hunt sympathetically incorporated verandahs, particularly evident on the southern elevation where the simple horizontal verandah provides ample shade in the summer, while contrasting with the vertical gabling of the roofline. Aesthetically the verandah adds to the State significance as the most ornately decorated example of Hunt's work, with a skirt of shingles and highly visible and beautifully executed wooden grotesques on the beam ends. Booloominbah exhibits State aesthetic significance as a restored example of the collaborative efforts of owner, architect and decorating firm in displaying the wealth of the client.
Speculation amongst the public that Condor Liberation was "at risk of capsizing in anything but the calmest weather" resulted in the publishing of an independent report by Houlder Limited which concluded that the maximum level of heel measured during wave rolling could be disconcerting to passengers but posed no threat to the safety of the vessel. The investigators were on board in a near gale when the significant wave height was 3 metres and short waves were breaking directly on the beam. The maximum heel recorded was 15.5° from horizontal. Rolling is less frequent than experienced in the same sea conditions on the earlier catamarans but the angle of heel is greater.

So the "over-reinforced concrete" beam fails by crushing of the compressive-zone concrete and before the tension zone steel yields, which does not provide any warning before failure as the failure is instantaneous. A balanced-reinforced beam is one in which both the compressive and tensile zones reach yielding at the same imposed load on the beam, and the concrete will crush and the tensile steel will yield at the same time.
