These 15 men formed African Lodge No 1, as the British departed, leaving them a permit to do almost everything but admit new masons. Two of the members were seafarers, and obtained entrance to a lodge in London, being recognised as regularly initiated Masons. This enabled their master, Prince Hall, to apply to the Moderns for a charter, which was duly granted on 29 September 1784, now as African Lodge No. 459. Such was the success of the lodge that it became a Provincial Grand Lodge, and Prince Hall the Provincial Grand Master.

Wideman was born at home in Penarth on 19 January 1927. He attended Alpha School in Harrow and later the Bedford Modern School due to the outbreak of World War II. In 1944 Wideman obtained entrance to the City and Guilds section of the Imperial College in Kensington and was close to the center of London throughout the V-1 and V-2 rocket attacks. In 1947 Wideman graduated with a Bachelor of Science with Honours in civil engineering. He then spent two years performing the mandatory National Service for the British Government that was required of every male at that time.

Guiteau believed he should be awarded a diplomatic post for his supposedly vital assistance, first asking for a consulship in Vienna, then expressing a willingness to "settle" for one in Paris. He loitered around Republican headquarters in New York City during the winter of 1880–1881, expecting rewards for his speech, but to no avail. Guiteau arrived in Washington on March 5, 1881, the day after Garfield's inauguration, still believing that he would be rewarded. He obtained entrance to the White House and saw the President on March 8, 1881, dropping off a copy of his speech as a reminder of the campaign work which he had done on Garfield's behalf.

She was an accomplished needlewoman, and by teaching her art she obtained entrance to many places not before accessible to foreigners. She went to India at a time when prejudices against woman's education and place in life were giving way. Her tact, spiritual insight, and judgment were all taxed to meet the new conditions, but she did it, and established a work that grew in great proportions. She was one of the first to perceive the enormous advantage possessed by women with a good medical training, and was a strong advocate of the education of female missionaries in the leading training schools for nurses or in the women's medical schools of the country.
