In many cases, bones will be missing from the fingers and some fingers or toes may be missing altogether. Nubbins Sawyer appears in The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. Edwin Neal portrays him as a mentally unstable and murderous cannibal and grave robber; he lives with his equally depraved family, the Sawyers, in the back roads of Texas, capturing, torturing, and feasting on unwary travelers. Though sadistic and violent, he is generally one of the least threatening characters in the movie, being not very intelligent, and behaving erratically. The character also has a bizarre speech impediment and a large port-wine stain birthmark on the right side of his face.

Prior to the events of the first film, Leatherface presumably used to work as a butcher at the meat processing plant alongside his brother, "The Cook" (referred to as Drayton Sawyer in further films), as his other brother, "The Hitchhiker" (later identified as Nubbins Sawyer), claims he did not work at the slaughterhouse, but that "My BROTHER worked there. My grandfather, too! My family's ALWAYS been in meat." Leatherface's family uses the bones and skin of the people he kills to create furniture for the inside of their house, along with some animal bones for decoration.

The Hitchhiker briefly chases after the van, kicking, yelling and smearing a bloody hand print on it, but soon relinquishes his attack on it. The film later identifies Nubbins as one of the brothers of the main villain of the film, Leatherface (Gunnar Hansen) and of Drayton Sawyer (Jim Siedow), as well as one of the family members of a mentally unstable and murderous family of cannibals. It is also revealed that he was the one responsible for the grave robbings and places the corpses all over the graveyards and took photos mentioned at the beginning of the film. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, a direct sequel to the 1974 film, featured a more campy and over-the-top atmosphere than the original. Tobe Hooper stated on The Shocking Truth that he wanted to expand on the dark comedy in the original film, as he felt no one truly picked up on this element. In this film, the late Nubbins is replaced by Chop Top, but the family remains otherwise the same. During the film, Leatherface develops a "crush" on one of his victims, and in one scene, removes the skin from the face of her still-living friend and places it on her to hide her from the rest of his family.

Galápagos is the story of a small band of mismatched humans who are shipwrecked on the fictional island of Santa Rosalia in the Galápagos Islands after a global financial crisis cripples the world's economy. Shortly thereafter, a disease renders all humans on Earth infertile, with the exception of the people on Santa Rosalia, making them the last specimens of humankind. Over the next million years, their descendants, the only fertile humans left on the planet, eventually evolve into a furry species resembling sea lions: though possibly still able to walk upright (it is not explicitly mentioned, but it is stated that they occasionally catch land animals), they have a snout with teeth adapted for catching fish, a streamlined skull and flipper-like hands with rudimentary fingers (described as "nubbins"). The story's narrator is a spirit who has been watching over humans for the last million years.
