The Fort Myers Beach Christmas Boat Parade takes place in December. The event features 30 to 50 illuminated boats decorated with an array of animated Christmas scenes and filling the air with Christmas carols. Briggs began his career with junior club Clydebank Juniors. After being capped by the Scotland junior team in 1912, he was signed by Heart of Midlothian manager John McCartney. Briggs made 70 appearances for the club between 1912 and 1917 and was forced to retire due to wounds sustained during the First World War. This track was marked out in the 19th century as a bridle trail from Katoomba to Jenolan Caves. It was called the Six Foot Track because it had to be that wide in order to accommodate two to three riders riding abreast. It fell into disuse eventually but was restored as a walking trail by the Department of Lands in 1984. It begins at the Explorers Tree at Katoomba, goes down through Nellies Glen and across the Megalong Valley to Coxs River.

After the outbreak of the First World War in August 1914, Crossan enlisted in McCrae's Battalion of the Royal Scots. Around the same time he was selected for the Scottish League XI with teammates Peter Nellies, James Low and Harry Graham. Once on active service, he was hit in the leg by shrapnel near Bazentin, France on 9 August 1916, during the Battle of the Somme. The leg was marked for amputation but was saved after being operated on by a German POW surgeon.
