In the fiscal year 2000–2001, exports posted a greater increase (14%) than imports (4.5%), helping bring the trade deficit down by 4% from the previous year to $749 million. Recently, the European Union has become the largest buyer of ready- made garments; fruits and vegetables (mostly apples, pears, tomatoes, various salads, peach, nectarine, potatoes, rice) from Nepal.

Plum pox, also known as sharka, is the most devastating viral disease of stone fruit from the genus Prunus. The disease is caused by the plum pox virus (PPV), and the different strains may infect a variety of stone fruit species including peaches, apricots, plums, nectarine, almonds, and sweet and tart cherries. Wild and ornamental species of Prunus may also become infected by some strains of the virus. The virus is transmitted by aphids and by the transfer of infected plant material to new locations.

Burn formed Everest the Hard Way with bassist Ian Stoddart and guitarist Stephen Lironi (who later joined Altered Images), the band releasing a single in April 1982, before Burn rejoined The Dirty Reds. Henderson and Burn went on to form Win with Stoddart in the mid 1980s, the band continuing until 1989. Henderson and Burn then worked together on Burn's Pie Finger project, releasing an album on Creation Records in 1992. Henderson then formed The Nectarine No. 9, which continued from the early 1990s until 2004.

Prunus persica × Prunus americana is the hybrid between the peach Prunus persica (often a nectarine) and the wild American plum Prunus americana. Hybrids were obtained in the 1940s at the University of Minnesota, and have been used in subsequent breeding, such as in the parentage of a plum called 'Minnesota No. 31221'. In that work, hybrids were also obtained between the Canadian wild plum (Prunus nigra) and the peach. Another such hybrid was produced at an orchard near Broadus, Montana in the mid 1980s.

The mountain leafhopper vectors the pathogen from wild hosts to cherry orchards but does not feed on the other hosts. The cherry leafhopper which feeds on the infected cherry trees then becomes the next vector that transmits from cherry orchards to peach, nectarine, and other economic crops. Control of Cherry X disease is limited to controlling the spread, vectors, and weed hosts of the pathogen. Once the pathogen has infected a tree it is fatal and removal is necessary to stop it from becoming a reservoir for vectors.

Signed to a revived Postcard Records, they released two albums in 1992 and 1994. In 1995, Quinn collaborated with Nectarine No. 9 on the Pregnant with Possibilities EP. Quinn has neither recorded nor made any public appearances for many years. He is reported to be in poor health, and to live in Dundee's West End.

Selecting cultivars is important and the best ones are the cultivars resistant to cold temperatures. As plant pathologists have learned better ways to develop more efficient resistance to the Leucostoma canker pathogens, there have been many really effective cultivars developed that can be used. However, the cultivars that offer the best resistance to cold temperatures have a higher ability to resist infection due to injury or wounding. A peach cultivar resistant to cold temperatures would be Redhaven one that is especially, recommended for Missouri and some nectarine cultivars include RedGold, Crimson Snow, Crimson Gold, Sunglo and many more.

Peach latent mosaic viroid was first described in the 1980s in Spain by a group of scientists. It is present in all peach- and nectarine-producing areas of the world including Europe, Asia, North America and South America and the frequency of naturally occurring infection is high. Before the development of symptoms the disease is latent in peach trees for approximately 5–7 years. The symptoms of the disease include necrosis of buds, delayed shoot development, necrotic branches, premature ageing of trees, flower streaking, ripening deformations, enlarged rounded stones, circular discoloured areas on the fruit skin and in some cases mosaic, blotch, vein banding or calico appearance on infected leaves.

It should not be forgotten that historically, the Arabs called the lower course of the Cinca River as "river of the olive trees" ("Nahr al- Zaytún") term that was incorporated in the toponyms of some localities like Mequinenza, then known as Miknasa al- Zaytun. B. tyroni have been found to infect almost all commercial fruit crops as hosts, including abiu, apple, avocado, babaco, capsicum, carambola, casimiroa, cherry, citrus, custard apple, granadilla, grape, guava, kiwifruit, mango, nectarine, papaya, passionfruit, peach, pear, persimmon, plum, pomegranate, prune, quince, loquat, santol, spodilla, tamarillo, tomato, and wax jambu, with the exception of pineapples. B. tyroni strongly prefer to oviposit into rotting fruit, although some evidence suggests that they will oviposit into under-ripe fruit as well. B. tyroni prefer to select fruits that have an outer layer that is able to be punctured or has already been lesioned. The majority of research on B. tyroni host selection has included just a few, economically important crops.

The leading contenders appeared to be Happy Laughter, Brolly, Nectarine (Lingfield Oaks Trial), Noemi (Princess Elizabeth Stakes), Donica (Prix Cléopâtre) and Bebe Grande (Cheveley Park Stakes). Ambiguity lost her form after her Oaks win and finished unplaced in most of her subsequent although she did finish second in the Oxfordshire Stakes at Newbury Racecourse in August. In October she was stepped up in distance and started at odds of 9/4 for the Jockey Club Cup over two miles at Newmarket Racecourse.

He began to graft buds from some of the over 250 heritage varieties grown there, some unique, onto a stock tree. Over the course of about five years the tree accumulated branches from forty different "donor" trees, each with a different fruit, including almond, apricot, cherry, nectarine, peach and plum varieties. It is not known how these works came to be in Cesari's collection at the time. The fruit being peeled by the boy is something of a mystery. Sources indicate it may be a pear, which is probably correct but has been questioned; it may be a nectarine or plum, several of which lie on the table, but these are not usually peeled; some have suggested a bergamot, a pear-shaped citrus fruit grown in Italy, but others object that the bergamot is sour and practically inedible. Seen as a simple genre painting, it differs from most in that the boy is not 'rusticated,' that is, he is depicted as clean and well-dressed instead of as a 'cute' ragamuffin.

Next, Ross embarked on other projects such as the High Bees with his wife, Syuzen Buckley, and Dave Ruffy (formerly with The Ruts). In the mid-1980s and throughout the 1990s, Ross worked with many artists such as former Josef K bandmate Paul Haig, Momus, Edwyn Collins, Dave Graney and The Coral Snakes, Blancmange and Barry Adamson (ex-Magazine and The Bad Seeds). He was also hired as musical consultant on The Beatles biographical film Backbeat (1993), and contributed to the original musical score of the film Chocolat (2000), playing guitar alongside Johnny Depp. Ross appeared on ex-Fire Engine Davy Henderson's band The Nectarine No. 9's last album, I Love Total Destruction (2004) and is currently working with another ex-Fire Engine, Russell Burn, in their new band, Stac Lee.

These fruits usually develop from a single carpel, and mostly from flowers with superior ovaries (polypyrenous drupes are exceptions). The definitive characteristic of a drupe is that the hard, "lignified" stone (sometimes called "pit") is derived from the ovary wall of the flower. In an aggregate fruit, which is composed of small, individual drupes (such as a raspberry), each individual is termed a drupelet, and may together form an aggregate fruit.
