Jerry Fish & The Mudbug Club are an independent alternative band from Ireland. Jerry Fish is the alter ego of musician and record producer Gerard Whelan (who also leads the band An Emotional Fish) who founded an independent record label and the band Jerry Fish & The Mudbug Club, an eclectic, roots collective of musicians, friends and songs inspired in part by a musical circus troupe from Barcelona, the movie soundtracks of Quentin Tarantino and the music of New York City artists Lou Reed, Marc Ribot and Willy DeVille (Mink DeVille). The band's sound has been described as a mix of 'lounge lizard schmooze and mariachi passion' and 'punk latino'. Jerry Fish & The Mudbug Club released the debut album Be Yourself in September 2002 and had a top ten hit in Ireland with the song True Friends after it was used in a television advertisement for Vodafone, the album went on to achieve multi-platinum sales in Ireland and was released in the U.K. in 2003 to critical acclaim.

It is known variously as the red swamp crayfish, Louisiana crawfish, or mudbug.

Be Yourself also includes contributions from Irish singer Damien Rice. Jerry Fish was given an Irish Music Award at the 2003 Meteor Awards for best Roots/Country Artist and went on to present the second series of the music television programme 'Other Voices' produced by Phillip King that same year. The Mudbug Club toured Be Yourself in Ireland and the U.K. throughout 2002, 2003 and 2004 and became a festival favourite in the United Kingdom and Ireland playing Glastonbury Festival, The Isle of Wight Festival, V Festival, T in the Park, Oxegen and The Electric Picnic. In 2004 Jerry Fish & The Mudbug Club recorded and released a live album and DVD Live at The Spiegeltent - floating on The River Liffey, recorded at the Palais de Glase Spiegeltent as part of The Dublin Fringe Festival.

Cois Fharraige 2009 took place from 11–13 September in Kilkee, County Clare. On 13 May 2009, it was reported that MCD had applied for a licence to hold the festival. It featured acts such as Doves, The Zutons, Newton Faulkner, Noah and the Whale, The Hold Steady, Stereo MCs, The Lightning Seeds and Jerry Fish & The Mudbug Club. The Blizzards and Laura Izibor were later added.

When news came that it was going to be axed, the programme's fans launched an unsuccessful campaign to save it. Among the signatories of a petition were Gay Byrne and Nicky Byrne from Westlife. Director of Programmes TV at RTÉ, Clare Duignan, said Open House had been on RTÉ for nearly as long as its predecessor, Live at 3. The last guest on Open House was Father Aiden Troy, before Jerry Fish & The Mudbug Club closed with a performance of "True Friends".

In 2009, the band released The Beautiful Untrue featuring guest vocals from rockabilly singer Imelda May and indie singer Carol Keogh. The Beautiful Untrue entered the Irish charts at number 7. In the same year Jerry Fish also recorded an album with the actors Michael Madsen, David Carradine and Harry Dean Stanton, and the singer Iggy Pop, with the contributors reciting poems written by Madsen. Fish and Madsen signed a deal to make three records together, released on Fish's "The Mudbug Club" label .

The event was broadcast on RTÉ Two on Wednesday 3 March at 21:00.

For several years the Rathangan Lughnasa festival was held during the August Bank Holiday weekend,Rathangan Lughnasa Summer Festival 2006 to celebrate the arts and crafts, music, literature, history, and sports of the town. Damien Dempsey, Jerry Fish and the Mudbug Club, The Blizzards, The Walls, Jack L, Lemon and John Spillane have all performed in the town as part of the Lughnasa since 2004. In 2009 The Lughnasa Festival played host the biggest concert ever staged in Rathangan when international band The Waterboys headlined the bill which also included Mundy.

They performed on the Hot Press New Bands Stage at Oxegen 2009 at Punchestown Racecourse in County Kildare on 12 July. They performed at Castlepalooza in Tullamore and Indie-pendence at Mitchelstown in County Cork in early August. On 23 July 2009, alongside artists and comedians such as Jerry Fish and the Mudbug Club, David Kitt and Eric Lalor, The Chapters performed at a special free event witnessed by two hundred people on board a train as part of the twenty-fifth anniversary celebrations of the Dublin Area Rapid Transit (DART). Debut single "Videotapes" was played on radio. "Trying to Get Ahead", the second single from Perfect Stranger, was released on 24 July 2009.
