Paul Ladmirault Paul Émile Ladmirault (8 December 1877 – 30 October 1944) was a French composer and music critic whose music expressed his devotion to Brittany. Claude Debussy wrote that his work possessed a "fine dreamy musicality", commenting on its characteristically hesitant character by suggesting that it sounded as if it was "afraid of expressing itself too much". Florent Schmitt said of him: "Of all the musicians of his generation, he was perhaps the most talented, most original, but also the most modest". Puerta de los Doce Cantos The Puerta de los Doce Cantos is a city gate located in the city of Toledo, in Castile-La Mancha, Spain. This is the most modest of all the gates in this city. Of Arab origin, it is located at the southeastern end of the fortress of Al-Hieén and had to serve to give way to the troops of foot, towards the Plaza de armas de Alcántara square. It was walled up for centuries, but with the civic renovations in the 1920s it was restored and declared of bien de interés cultural, although part of its Arabic structure had been removed.

A new generation of Islamic leadership emerged in Algeria at the time of World War I and grew to maturity during the 1920s and 1930s. Various groups were formed in opposition to French rule, most notable the National Liberation Front (FLN) and the National Algerian Movement. Colons (colonists), or, more popularly, pieds noirs (literally, black feet) dominated the government and controlled the bulk of Algeria's wealth. Throughout the colonial era, they continued to block or delay all attempts to implement even the most modest reforms. But from 1933 to 1936, mounting social, political, and economic crises in Algeria induced the indigenous population to engage in numerous acts of political protest.

Run privately for profit, as were all English prisons until the 19th century, the Marshalsea looked like an Oxbridge college and functioned as an extortion racket. Debtors in the 18th century who could afford the prison fees had access to a bar, shop and restaurant, and retained the crucial privilege of being allowed out during the day, which gave them a chance to earn money for their creditors. Everyone else was crammed into one of nine small rooms with dozens of others, possibly for years for the most modest of debts, which increased as unpaid prison fees accumulated. The poorest faced starvation and, if they crossed the jailers, torture with skullcaps and thumbscrews.

Walter Lindrum's distinctive grave in Melbourne General Cemetery On 30 July 1960, at the age of 61, Walter Lindrum suddenly became ill and died while on holiday in Surfers Paradise, Queensland. The cause of death was officially listed as heart failure, but it has alternatively been suggested that he died as a result of food poisoning from a steak and kidney pie. Following his death, cricketing legend Sir Donald Bradman wrote to Lindrum's niece, Dolly Lindrum: "In my opinion he was not only the greatest billiards player who ever lived, but he was also the most modest of great champions." His body was returned to Melbourne, and he was given a state funeral attended by 1,500 people.

Midi Olympique is a French bi-weekly newspaper specializing in rugby, belonging to the La Dépêche group and based partly in Toulouse and partly in Paris. The first edition was published on 2 September 1929, meaning it is one of the oldest French weekly still in existence (after Le Canard enchaîné). Jean-Michel Baylet is the director of the publication and Jacques Verdier the managing director. Nicknamed Midol or le jaune (yellow) in reference to the color of the paper is made of, it mainly covers news from rugby, from the professional Top 14 league to the amateur teams of the most modest levels (Fourth Series), and it also devotes a page to rugby league.

Lempi Ikävalko (9 May 1901 in Ruskeala, Finland - 1994 in Helsinki) was a Finnish writer, poet, actress and performance artist. She spent much of her adult life as a journalist in the United States but she strongly identified with her roots in Karelia—in Finnish, Karjala, the region considered the cradle of Finnish mythology because the Kalevala, the national epic poem, came from there. (Note: since World War II Karelia has been divided between Finland and Russia.) In the 1940s two books of Lempi Ikävalko's poetry were published in Finland, and she gave recitals at the Finnish National Theatre and other venues - a long way to come for a peasant girl from the most modest of circumstances in an obscure country village. Aside from the reputation of her two books, the first of which was written in a time of great hardship (World War II), and both of which were well received, she also established a herself as an expert in the 22,000-line narrative of the Kalevala, which she recited at Finnish community festivals in the U.S. and elsewhere.
