A big event on the Cherry Grove social calendar is the 4th-of-July weekend "Invasion of the Pines", which dates back to 1976, when a resident of the Grove showed up wearing drag in Fire Island Pines and was refused service. In the 1970s, the Pines was a more-conservative, more-heterosexual community than the Grove. There are two annual drag show contests in Cherry Grove: the Homecoming queen show over Memorial Day weekend, and the Miss Fire Island the longest running contest the weekend after Labor Day.

Harris (2002) tested these hypotheses among 210 individuals: 48 homosexual women, 50 homosexual men, 40 heterosexual women, and 49 heterosexual men. The purpose of sperm donation is to provide pregnancies for women whose male partner is infertile or, more commonly, for women who do not have a male partner. The development of fertility medicine such as ICSI has enabled more and more heterosexual couples to produce their own children without the use of third-party gametes, but the use of sperm donation as a method of reproduction among heterosexual single women and LGBT single women and same-sex couples as social attitudes and the social/legal framework has changed has seen a rise in its use. Direct sexual contact between the parties is avoided since the donor's sperm is placed in the woman's body by artificial means (but see Natural Insemination). Sperm donation preserves the sexual integrity of a recipient, but a woman who becomes pregnant by a sperm donor benefits from his reproductive capacity.

Unlike overt gay pornography, beefcake magazines could be sold by newspaper stands, bookstores, and pharmacies – where they could be purchased by closeted gay and bisexual men under the pretense of an interest in fitness or figurative art – and could be sent through the U.S. mail. They were available in cities and even towns across the United States and by subscription, and popular titles such as Physique Pictorial served as an early nationwide cultural nexus for bisexual and gay men. With the legalization and increased availability of gay pornographic magazines and videos in the 1960s and 1970s, most beefcake magazines either evolved to include more explicit material or went out of business. They experienced a smaller resurgence in popularity with a greater focus on fitness in the 1980s and 1990s alongside fitness magazines for a more heterosexual audience, before the decline of the magazine industry in general.

Van Wyk and Geist summarized several studies comparing bisexuals with hetero- or homosexuals that have indicated that bisexuals have higher rates of sexual activity, fantasy, or erotic interest. These studies found that male and female bisexuals had more heterosexual fantasy than heterosexuals or homosexuals; that bisexual men had more sexual activities with women than did heterosexual men, and that they masturbated more but had fewer happy marriages than heterosexuals; that bisexual women had more orgasms per week and they described them as stronger than those of hetero- or homosexual women; and that bisexual women became heterosexually active earlier, masturbated and enjoyed masturbation more, and were more experienced in different types of heterosexual contact. Research suggests that, for most women, high sex drive is associated with increased sexual attraction to both women and men. For men, however, high sex drive is associated with increased attraction to one sex or the other, but not to both, depending on sexual orientation.
