In 2004, Melissa Swingle's band Trailer Bride broke up, and she formed The Moaners with drummer Laura King, formerly of the Chapel Hill band Grand National. The band is often compared to The White Stripes, as they are also a two-piece and employ a similar garage rock, bluesy style.

Clara Smith (March 13, 1894 - February 2, 1935) was an American classic female blues singer. She was billed as the "Queen of the Moaners", even though she had a lighter and sweeter voice than many of her contemporaries. She was not related to the singers Bessie Smith and Mamie Smith.

The dark, southern gothic elements of Trailer Bride are also evident; however a major difference is that The Moaners have more an electric, punk rock style. The band's first album, Dark Snack was produced by Rick Miller of the band Southern Culture on the Skids. Their next release, Blackwing Yalobusha was produced by former Squirrel Nut Zippers member Jimbo Mathus. They appear in video documentary of the WV White Family titled "Jesco White Hellbilly Part 2".

Towards the end of the 2009–10 season, Nish described the Hibernian fans as "moaners" following an Edinburgh derby defeat. Nish soon apologised for those remarks, calling for unity between players and supporters ahead of an important match against Motherwell. Nish scored a hat-trick in the first half of that match, yet Hibernian only managed a 6–6 draw, in the highest scoring SPL match in league history. Nish then scored both goals in a 2–0 win at Tannadice Park that secured a UEFA Europa League place for Hibernian.
