America next hosted, commencing on 14 June, forty-nine midshipmen from the United States Naval Academy and Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps (NROTC) units across the country. For six weeks the "middies", under the watchful eyes of the ship's officers, filled junior officer billets in all of the departments in the ship. In late July, the second group of 41 "middies" arrived for their six-week cruise. America transited the Dardanelles on 21 June and arrived at Istanbul, where Rear Admiral Geis laid a wreath at the foot of the grave of the Unknown Soldier as a tribute to the Turkish war dead.

Smith was born in Wallace, Idaho, to Pappy Smith and Florence E. "Mother Dwarf" Smith. He was raised in Paradise Prairie, twenty miles outside of Spokane, Washington. He stole thirteen cars when he was thirteen. In 1968 Smith was one of thirteen middies ousted by the Naval Academy for smoking pot.

The Middies returned to the playoffs in 2015-2016, making the state finals and losing to Aquinas Institute. The team has a rivalry with the NFA Goldbacks from nearby Newburgh. Middletown's track and field team is nationally recognized and has produced a number of successful college athletes and state and national qualifiers.

Frank Wilson Truitt, Jr., (April 4, 1925 – December 21, 2014) was a multi- sport collegiate coach and a veteran of World War II. Among his noteworthy accomplishments, Truitt engineered the historic upset of Jerry Lucas's Middletown Middies basketball team in the Ohio 1958 Division AA state semifinals and helped coach the Ohio State men's basketball team to the 1960 NCAA Championship.

The national title game represented the 50th time the Middies and Maryland had met since the sport was put on Maryland's varsity list in 1924. The Terps season concluded with a five-game winning streak including victories over lacrosse powers Johns Hopkins, Hofstra, Washington & Lee, and Navy. Navy had earlier in the season upset Maryland. Bob DeSimone tied for the lead in goals for Navy with eight.

Dracut Senior High School is the public senior high school in the Merrimack Valley town of Dracut, Massachusetts, United States. The high school's colors are Columbia blue, navy blue, white and gold. The team name is the Middies and the symbol is an anchor, or a “Block ‘D’”. These are references to midshipmen, as historically, the town was a place where U.S. Navy uniforms were created.

Chris Bruce, a 2002 graduate that earned YoUDee its initial first-place finish, joined Raymond's mascot-making company, Real Characters. Brandon Williams, a 2003 graduate became the Baltimore Ravens mascot Poe. Other YoUDee alumni went on to perform Philadelphia Eagles' mascot Swoop, and Boudwin went on to perform as Clutch of the Houston Rockets. Some controversy was aroused in November 1995 when YoUDee "mocked" middies (Midshipmen) at the United States Naval Academy.

The Middies' heads tilt and their eyes look left and right without changing color. The bodies of the full-size dolls vary depending on the time of the release. Early releases in 2001-2002 used the body of the Licca doll. In June 2002, in commemoration of 1 year of Blythe releases by Takara/CWC, the doll Miss Anniversary was released featuring the "Excellent Body" that was quite similar to the original Blythe released by Kenner.

She arrived at Annapolis, Maryland on 1 June, embarked midshipmen, and sailed for Europe. She visited Norway, Belgium, France, and the United Kingdom before debarking the "Middies" at Naval Station Norfolk. In April 1965, she began overhaul and alterations at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard. On 22 August she returned to Mayport en route to Guantanamo Bay Naval Base, Cuba, for refresher training. She operated along the coast of the United States' southern states until departing Mayport on 22 July 1966 for the Mediterranean deployment.

In 1979, shortly after working for The Daily Texan, Perkins went on to an internship with The Washington Post where he was a staff photographer for 27 years. Perkins was first initially given the job due to a series he shot in his free time on the first class of female "middies" at the Naval Academy. Once coming on to the paper, Perkins developed a passion for his job in covering extravagant international events. These include the Palestinian revolution, both the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, as well as wars in what was the former Yugoslavia.

Each team must keep four players in its defensive zone and three players in its offensive zone at all times. It does not matter which positional players satisfy the requirement, although usually the three attackmen stay in the offensive zone, the three defensemen and the goalie stay in the defensive zone, and the three middies play in both zones. A team that violates this rule is offsides and either loses possession of the ball if they have it or incurs a technical foul if they do not. A face-off The regulation playing time of a game is 60 minutes, divided into four periods of 15 minutes each.

The remaining three players (usually midfielders or middies) are free to roam the field as they please during the game. There are ten players on the field at a time. Still each team is allowed a maximum of seven players on their half of the field at a team and six players on their opponents’ side of the field at a time with the goalie being the extra man. Like hockey, substitutions are considered “on the fly” meaning that the players may enter and exit the field during gameplay assuming each team has a maximum of ten players on the field at the time.

The Middletown Middies football team shares a historic rivalry with the Port Jervis High School Red Raiders, named the Erie Bell game after the trophy, which is an old railroad bell from the Port Jervis-Middletown line. The game is an alternating home-and-away series and started in 1897. Middletown leads the series 72-58-7 as of 2015, and has won three of the last four games. Beginning in 2014, the game is on the list of U.S. Marines Great American Rivalry games. Middletown's boys basketball team is highly regarded in the state, and during the 2011-2012 school year the team went to the final four of the state playoffs.

Zimmerman remained the bandmaster even after being offered the more prestigious position with the Marine Corps Band in 1897, and is perhaps best known for composing "Anchors Aweigh" in 1907, intending it to be an inspiring and timeless piece of music that could be used as a football marching song. Under Zimmerman's successor, Adolph Torovsky, the Academy Band made its first commercial recording, in 1920, using Zimmerman's "Anchors' Aweigh", and one of Torovsky's own pieces, "March of the Middies". In 1939, the Band began performing on Maryland radio stations and represented that state at the World Fair, while the director, Lieutenant Sima, composed the "Victory March", one of the most well-known and popular pieces produced at the Academy. Under Alexander Cecil Morris in the middle of the 20th century, the Academy Band performed on television for the first time, established a weekly radio show and acquired entirely new instruments and facilities.

The Lions tied Syracuse 0–0 at the Polo Grounds in New York city in front of their largest seasonal crowd to date, 25,000.
