On Earth, those BECs are dragged down by gravity, limiting the amount of time they can be observed, but aboard the microgravity environment of the ISS, they can be observed for much longer — up to 10 seconds and should give scientists some insight into how the particles interact with one another.

Microgravity affects your body in weird ways, the high-risk environment can create high-stress situations, and you don't have the comforts of your daily life on Earth: no showers, no fresh food, no fresh air, and no loved ones to go back to at the end of your work day.

Blue Origin has been testing a smaller, reusable rocket and spaceship called New Shepard, which is intended to fly paying passengers to an altitude of about 62 miles (100 km) so they can experience a few minutes of microgravity and see the limb of Earth set against the blackness of space.

And those industries have to consider people who need air, food and places to live as more desirable workers than tireless solar-powered robots specifically designed for vacuum and microgravity—unless people to want to do the work so much that they will pay for the privilege, or contrive to receive subsidies.

Alongside two Kentucky hemp and cannabis cultivation and retail companies, Atalo Holdings, which provides hemp genetics, and Anavii Market, an online retailer of hemp-derived cannabidiol (CBD) therapeutics, Space Tango has set up its own subsidiary to research how microgravity can be used to better cultivate particular strands of hemp for medical compounds.

The short duration means that the space tourists won't have to worry about things that plague astronauts on longer stays in space: Maezawa and his artist posse probably won't develop vision changes or lose bone mass and muscle tone like astronauts do over months in the microgravity of the space station, says Petra Illig, a doctor who specializes in aerospace medicine.

Three more experiments are due to fly on Sunday: one from Purdue University, studying the shapes of fluids in zero-G; one from Louisiana State University and William Jewell College that focuses on temperature and composition differences in fluids and how they flow in microgravity; and a third from Germany's Braunschweig University of Technology, which will investigate the dynamics of dust collisions in the early Solar System.

Yip says that while there has been some activity already in biotech and microgravity, "we're on the early end of this innovation," and goes on to suggest that over the course of the next ten or so years, the companies that will be disrupting the existing class of legacy big pharma players will be ones who've invested early and deeply in space-based research and development.

"While we have initial visual and scent feedback from the crew aboard the ISS, we're excited to dive into fully understanding the baking results -- including breaking down why the bake time and temperature in space varies from what we are used to seeing on Earth, as well as if the baking tray, which was designed specifically for microgravity, impacted the final shape of the baked cookies," said Mary Murphy, senior internal payloads manager with Nanoracks.
