Thankfully, committed voice performances, memorable visual designs, and a few great narrative beats make the bulk of these characters stand out in a way that the NPCs of most other mech games rarely do—even the eyebrow raising ones get their moments in the sun, or a touch here or there that keeps them just on the right side of likable.

A Zone of the Enders title called Anubis Mars is probably the biggest news for longtime PlayStation fans; the original ZOE was a mech-fighting game developed by Konami for the PS2 and famously bundled with a demo for Metal Gear Solid 2.

While many games in the mech space—not only Armored Core, but also franchises like MechWarrior and Titanfall—lean towards stylized, milspec "realism," DXM wears its anime influence on its sleeve (and not only because Macross co-creator Shoji Kawamori helped design DXM's mechs, nor because of the inclusion of Gundam voice actors Toru Furuya (Amuro) and Shuichi Ikeda (Char) in the game's Japanese voice cast, though those help).

She had to swerve carefully around a stack of crates full of onions, apparently trundling along under its own power, and then found herself stuck for a few frustrating seconds behind what at first she took to be a puzzlingly tall mech, but when it finally moved she realized it was actually a human in an environmental support suit, someone from a low-gravity habitat, to judge from their height and need to wear the suit.

Larson's stories are quite a bit of fun to read, and cover a lot of territory: cyberpunk adventures about an orphaned albino girl who discovers a mech in the midst of a garbage dump in "Ghost Girl," or about a basketball scout who discovers that a prospect, Oxford Diallo, isn't quite what he appears in "Meshed", to space opera like "The Ghost Ship Anastasia," about a starship repair crew that runs into all sorts of problems on one difficult mission.

Many of these fights occur naturally through the story content, but can be repeated in side missions or through the game's co-op play (which I unfortunately was unable to try by time of review, though that content is available even offline, allowing you to team up with campaign NPCs you've successfully impressed through the main story.) If there's a mark against this system, it's that the gear itself is never as distinct as that in many of those other mech games.

This last crisis puts at least four confirmed I-mech battalions and possibly one full cyclone brigade within hyperswarm range of Washington, D.C. All the while, our bases remained shuttered, our ships docked, our aircraft grounded and even our joint cyberspace network — the core of our national defense — continues to be "temporarily unavailable" while its operators sit at home waiting to hear about their new pay raise, working hours, vacation days and, as stateless citizens, immunity from not only war crimes but all crimes under U.S. law.
