Polar Bear Marathon is an extreme marathon race held since 2012 at Churchill, Manitoba, Canada. The race is held in the last week of November along Hudson Bay shore in extremely cold weather. The organizer of the Polar Bear Marathon is Albert Martens, a native of Steinbach, Manitoba, which is situated some 1000 km south of Churchill. Martens is a seasoned marathon runner who himself has participated in around 60 marathon and ultramarathon races, including Badwater Ultramarathon in Death Valley, California. Martens came to the idea of marathon race in particularly challenging cold weather after running a marathon race at -32 °C in 2011. The challenge of the selected race route is related not only to tough weather (during 2013 race the temperatures dropped to -20 °C, or -41° with wind chill, while the runners in 2012 were "disappointed" by milder temperatures between -10° and -20°), but also to the abundance of polar bears in its vicinity.

Boonstra is a 1984 graduate of the University of Vermont, where he competed for the Vermont Catamounts team. He is also a marathon runner, and in 2003 became the oldest champion of the Mount Marathon Race at 41.

Kellner was one of 17 athletes to start the marathon race (the first modern Olympic marathon). He finished in fourth place, but when the third-place finisher, Spiridon Belokas, was found to have covered a portion of the race by carriage, Kellner was awarded third place.

Lisa Jane Weightman (born 16 January 1979) is an Australian long distance runner who specialises in the marathon event. She represented Australia in the marathon at the 2008 Summer Olympics, the 2012 Summer Olympics and the 2009 World Championships in Athletics. She won her first marathon race in 2010, setting a personal best time of 2:28:48 at the Nagano Olympic Commemorative Marathon. She has also competed at the IAAF World Road Running Championships and the IAAF World Cross Country Championships, winning a team bronze in the latter competition in 2008.

Arlene Pieper became the first woman to officially finish a marathon in the United States when she finished the Pikes Peak Marathon in Manitou Springs, Colorado, in 1959. Her daughter Kathie, 9, became the youngest competitor at that time to finish the half marathon race to the summit, but did not finish the whole marathon. Arlene also entered the Pikes Peak Marathon in 1958 but stopped at the summit, therefore being disqualified. Gezahegne Abera (Amharic: ገዛሄኘ አበራ; born April 23, 1978) is an Ethiopian athlete, winner of the marathon race at the 2000 Summer Olympics. Born in Etya, Arsi Province, Gezahegne's first international competition was the 1999 Los Angeles Marathon, where he finished fourth, behind three Kenyans. That earned him a place in the Ethiopian 1999 World Championships team, where he finished eleventh. Later in the 1999 season, Gezahegne won his first international marathon by finishing first at Fukuoka marathon in Japan. He won this marathon again in 2001 and 2002.

Mónica Pont Chafer (born June 3, 1969 in Bufali, Valencia) is a former long- distance runner from Spain, who won the Rotterdam Marathon on April 23, 1995 clocking 2:30:34. She represented her native country at the 1996 Summer Olympics in the women's marathon race, where she finished in 14th place. Pont set her personal best (2:27:53) in the classic distance in the 1996 Osaka International Ladies Marathon. Her time from that event was then the second- best Spanish women's marathon time recorded, and it remains the Valencian record.

In 1905 he had joined Bloomingdale Brothers as an assistant to the manager of the sporting goods department. On July 9, 1927, the Balto Building was dedicated and the new flag was raised for the first time at the Jesse Lee Home. The date is still commemorated in the state as Alaska Flag Day. On July 4, 1928, another Chignik boy, Ephriam Kalmakoff, at 14 years old won Seward's Mount Marathon Race, a mountain foot race above Seward that stood until 1957.

Nobby packed his wife and children off to safer climes, he closed his bar and, heavily disguised, he escaped to the Cape Colony by hiding under the seat of a railway carriage. Masters W45 marathon world record progression is the progression of world record improvements of the marathon W45 division of Masters athletics. Originally named the Last Chance for Boston Marathon, it was first held in 2001 and was offered literally as a last opportunity to qualify for the Boston Marathon. Race event personnel would hand carry the Boston Marathon applications of those runners who had qualified to the Post Office immediately after the race. Recently, changing application deadlines for the Boston Marathon have meant that the race is no longer the “last chance” to qualify but the race has retained its name. Qualifying times in this race may be used to enter the same year or the following year’s Boston Marathon.

The Chris Brasher Sporting Life Trophy is a trophy that is awarded annually to the elite male and female winners of the London Marathon. It was previously awarded to the winners of the Polytechnic Marathon between 1909 and 1961 which was staged between Windsor in Berkshire and various locations in London. The creation of the trophy was instigated by Jack Andrew, the secretary of the London Polytechnic Harriers athletics club in the wake of the popularity of the marathon after the 1908 Summer Olympics in London. Andrew approached William Will, the editor of the Sporting Life, who agreed to fund a trophy for a new annual marathon race in London.

The race also features a spectacular event two days before the actual marathon race known as the SSQ Star Race. The race is giant loop which participants may run as many times as they wish within the hour and a half available. The race begins at night, usually around 8pm, and for the first hour and fifteen minutes a musical show will be put on around the course, which is well lit up by many multi-coloured lights, including the LED caps given to each participant. After and hour and thirty-five minutes, just five minutes after the participants finish running, a firework show begins to light up the night sky.

The BMW Dallas Marathon (formerly the Dallas White Rock Marathon) is Texas' oldest marathon and has taken place each December in Dallas, Texas since 1971 (with the exception of 2013 due to an ice storm known locally to Dallas and Fort Worth citizens as "Icepocalypse 2013"). An official time from the BMW Dallas Marathon can be used to qualify for the Boston Marathon. The course begins & ends in Downtown Dallas and features iconic neighborhoods and White Rock Lake along the way. In recent years, race weekend has included the Mayor's Race 5K, a 5-person relay and a half-marathon in addition to the traditional marathon race.

Kuruppu Arachchige Karunaratne (or K.A. Karunaratne; 29 April 1960 – 6 April 2008) was a Sri Lankan long-distance runner who specialized in the marathon event. As a runner he won 1990 Singapore Marathon in a time of 2:21:10, competed at the 1992 Summer Olympics and the 1993 World Championships. He was killed on 6 April 2008 along with 14 others by a suicide bomber, who exploded himself at the start of a marathon race which was part of the Sinhala and Tamil New Year celebration in Weliveriya town. Sri Lanka's national athletics coach Lakshman de Alwis and politician Jeyaraj Fernandopulle were also killed in the bombing which wounded 90 others.

Derek Clayton (born 17 November 1942) is a former Australian long-distance runner, born in Cumbria, England and raised in Northern Ireland. Clayton set a marathon world best in the Fukuoka Marathon, Japan on 3 December 1967 in 2:09:36.4, in what is considered a classic race, the first marathon race ever run in less than two hours and ten minutes. He went on to break this time in Antwerp on 30 May 1969 by more than a minute; this time stood as the world best for nearly another 12 years. His personal best time of 2:08:33.6 is still a world class marathon time. Clayton represented Australia at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City, finishing in 7th place (2:27:23).

He came in third at the 1994 London Marathon, then finished as runner- up behind Khalid Skah at the 1994 IAAF World Half Marathon Championships in Oslo, taking the silver medal. Although he was one second away from victory at the Oslo race, his half marathon time of 1:00:28 was a Mexican record – a mark which, as of 2012, remains the country's best. During the New York City Marathon race in November, he recovered from a wrong turn seven-tenths of a mile before the finish that put him 40 yards behind his countryman Benjamín Paredes. He ran a 5:15 final mile, including the detour, to beat Paredes by two seconds with a time of 2:11:21.

He finished third over 3000 metres at the 2004 IAAF World Athletics Final. He also competed at the Olympic Games in Athens that year, finishing tenth in the 1500 metres competition. He reached the semi-finals of the event at the 2008 Summer Olympics. Among other competitions, he was fifth in the junior race at the 2004 IAAF World Cross Country Championships and ran in the 1500 m heats at the 2005 World Championships in Athletics. He won the half marathon race at the Marrakesh Marathon in January 2011, finishing in a time of 1:02:00.

Semple was born in Glasgow, Scotland, and emigrated to the United States in 1921 to work as a cabinetmaker in Philadelphia. He moved to Boston after running in his first Boston Marathon and began to work in sport-related fields. He was a masseur and physical therapist for the Boston Bruins and the Boston Celtics, and a trainer for Olympic athletes. Kathrine Switzer in 2011; behind her are photos of the 1967 incident with Semple Semple became known to a lay audience while working as a Boston Marathon race co-director. He had an established history dating back to at least 1957 of physically attacking Boston Marathon runners he perceived to be "non serious" competitors, whether officially entered or running the course unofficially.

Alain Mimoun of France and Veikko Karvonen of Finland were considered the pre-race favorites. Some have also seen Mihalić as one of the favorites, as he enhanced his reputation earlier in the year by winning the Balkan Games marathon in Belgrade in a then- spectacular time of 2:16:25, which would have been the fastest marathon race ever if the course had not been found too short. He had won a second place behind a fellow countryman Jack Caffery at the Boston Marathon in 1900. He also had won the Hamilton Around the Bay Road Race on two occasions. In 1906, Sherring – an athlete of St. Patrick's Athletic Club – was chosen to represent Canada in the Athens Olympic Games.

Rossi had submitted a qualifying time of 3:11 that he had supposedly run in the Lehigh Valley Health Network Via Marathon. The organizers of that marathon asked USA Track & Field for help in investigating cheating allegations, raised mostly by other runners who, in exploring Rossi's race history, noticed that a 3:11 marathon was inconsistent with all of Rossi's other publicly available race results. Kanakuri was a native of Tamana, Kumamoto, Japan and attended the Tokyo Higher Normal School. However, Kanakuri is best known for disappearing during the marathon race in the 1912 Stockholm Olympics. Mapaseka Makhanya (born 9 April 1985) is a South African middle- and long- distance runner who specializes in the marathon race, formerly in the 800 and 1500 metres. In global events, she competed at the 2001 World Youth Championships and the 2004 World Junior Championships without reaching the final, and placed lowly at the 2011 and 2013 World Cross Country Championships (83rd and 86th). She finished eleventh in the 1500 metres at the 2007 All- Africa Games and sixth in the 800 metres at the 2010 African Championships. She also competed at the 2007 Summer Universiade without reaching the final. Makhanya shifted to road races from 2013 on, making her marathon debut in Johannesburg the same year. In 2015, she finished third at the Hannover Marathon in a time of 2:31:02 hours.

Gradwohl started her sporting career as a cyclist, until she began long-distance running at the Vienna Marathon. In 2002, she won her first national championship title in the Wachau Marathon, with a time of 1:14:47 for the half-marathon race, in addition to her personal best of 1:13:25, and two other titles in Vienna for the following year. She had also won medals in numerous marathon races, including silver at the Stockholm Marathon in 2006, and gold at the Linz Marathon in 2008, beating her personal best time of 2:30:51. Gradwohl did not only set a national record for her best possible time, but also reached a qualifying standard time of 2:33:00, which made her eligible to compete at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.

The men's marathon is a specialty, with five wins in the men's field (two each for the Olympic champions Gelindo Bordin and Stefano Baldini, plus that of Daniele Meucci) and two in the women's field with Maria Guida and Anna Incerti. Pietro Mennea and Adolfo Consolini, three times each, are the Blues with the most European titles, while in the women's field Messina Annarita Sidoti, with two victories, holds this record. In Stuttgart 1986 the Italian athletes achieved a historical undertaking by painting the entire podium of blue with Stefano Mei, Alberto Cova and Totò Antibo in the 10,000 meters, a result repeated in the marathon race in Budapest 1998 with Stefano Baldini, Danilo Goffi and Giacomo Modica.

At the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, Yamauchi equalled the best performance by a British woman in the marathon by finishing sixth in a time of 2 hrs 27 mins 29 secs. In 2009, she came second in the London Marathon setting a personal best time of 2:23:12 after earlier setting a half marathon personal best when winning the Marugame Half Marathon (68 m 29 secs). The most outstanding feature of this marathon race was undoubtedly the freak weather, it was called by most participants, for the first 700 miles to Oban the conditions were as near perfect as they could be, and the fog on the Inverness-Dundee run, and the rough seas of the Dundee-Whitby leg were greeted almost with glee. Avenger Too, crewed by Timo Mäkinen, Pascoe Watson and Brian Hendicott, the Round Britain race was a success story from start to finish. They won the first leg to Falmouth and the second leg to Milford Haven; on the run to Douglas they were third, but still retained their overall lead.

He was also the first man to win a marathon at the now official standard distance of 26 miles 385 yards when Olympic officials lengthened the distance to put the finish line in front of the Royal Box (the 1896 and 1904 Olympic marathons had been less than 25 miles long).

This was the fastest ever time for a woman in the half marathon race and made her the sixth fastest woman overall. She played down suggestions of a permanent switch to longer road races, however, saying a marathon debut would have to wait until after the 2012 London Olympics. At the 2010 European Athletics Championships, Abeylegesse won gold in the 10,000 m, finishing in 31 minutes, 10.23 seconds On 28 July 2010, and she won the silver medal in 5000m finishing in 14 minutes, 54.44 seconds on 1 August 2010. She narrowly missed out on a medal at the 2010 IAAF Continental Cup, finishing two seconds behind Molly Huddle in the 5000 m. She returned to action in 2012 after her pregnancy and made her debut over 20 km, finishing as runner-up at the 20 Kilomètres de Paris.

Erika Csomor (born 8 November 1973, Cegléd) is a Hungarian triathlete and duathlete. In 1998 she ran the marathon race at the European Championships, ending up in 36th place with a total time of 2:48:37. In 2001, she won the silver medal at the Duathlon Long Distance World Championships. In that same year she became World Champion in the ITU Duathlon World Championships held in Italy. In 2002, she was unable to successfully defend her title, but still managed to take the silver. Two years later at the 2004 ITU Duathlon World Championships in Geel, Belgium she became World Champion for the second time in her career. Also in 2004 she would win the bronze medal at the Duathlon Long Distance World Championships in Denmark. She won the silver medal at the 2007 Triathlon Long Distance World Championships in Lorient behind Leanda Cave. On 29 March 2008, she won the Ford Ironman 70.3 California with a time of 4:23:07 (unofficial), beating 2006 Ironman Hawaii champion Michellie Jones and 2006 Ironman 70.3 champion Samantha McGlone.

However, he was absent from the top international level until late 2006 when he won a silver medal at the Asian Games. The 2019 Berlin Marathon was the 46th edition of the marathon race held in Berlin, Germany. The event featured elite marathon races for men and women, a mass marathon event, as well as categories for handbikes, wheelchair racing and inline skating. The competition was supported by BMW as title sponsor. The elite races were the final leg of the World Marathon Majors for the 2018–19 season and were also Gold Label races for the 2019 IAAF Road Race Label Events series. In the men's race, Ethiopian Kenenisa Bekele won in a time of 2:01:41 hours, which fell short of the world record time set by Eliud Kipchoge in Berlin the previous year by just two seconds. His second placed countryman Birhanu Legese moved up to third place in the all-time lists with 2:02:48 hours and a third Ethiopian, Sisay Lemma, made it a sweep of the podium with 2:03:36 hours for third. The Austrian Peter Herzog was twelfth with a time of 2:10:57 hours – the best among Europeans. The women's elite race also featured an Ethiopian duel, which saw Ashete Bekere win in 2:20:14 over Mare Dibaba (2:20:21 hours).
