Not all Christians were ransomed shortly after their arrival in North Africa, and Dupuis is most remembered for his liberation of the American Robert Adams after Adams suffered for three years as a Barbary captive. Upon making note of Adams in his historical record on October 6, 1813, Dupuis wrote that "Like most other Christians after a long captivity and severe treatment among the Arabs, he appeared on his first arrival exceedingly stupid and insensible; and he scarcely spoke to anyone." Adams remained with Dupuis in Mogador for seven months, during which time he was able to recover from the hardship of his life as a Barbary slave. Adams later ended up in London, where he told the full story of his experience as a Barbary slave in The Narrative of Robert Adams, published in 1816.

" Nicely combines elements of those styles, including phasing, unusual electronic manipulation, the "melancholic buzzing orchestral waves" of keyboards, guitars and strings, vocals that have been cited as "underwater- and outer space-beamed" as well as brief, distant spoken phrases. Jim Irvin wrote of Psychotropia: "It feels like three decades of music–Beatles, Eno, Utopia, Buggles, MBV—flashing by in a spaceship, a delirious pop fans ecstatic narcotic rush," while, finding some of its songs to pay tribute to music of the past while anticipating music yet to come, and making note of the conspicuous usage of the Fairlight synth on some songs, Uncut found the album to be a work of "faux-psych" and post-psychedelia. Algemeen Dagblad found the album to bridge the gap between 1960s psychedelia, 1980s New Romantic and 2000s new wave revival. Sound effects, studio trickery and oscillations complement the hooky melodies, erudite lyrics and "controlled production.

Eduardo Rivadavia of Allmusic calls Wintersun a blend of "the hyper-fast precision of Yngwie Malmsteen-like guitar playing (witness the speedy "Beyond the Dark Sun") with the melodic sensibilities of post-Helloween power metal (see the more diverse "Winter Madness") and a homegrown passion for folk-styled songwriting descended straight from trailblazing compatriots Amorphis," describing Mäenpää's album as "jaw-dropping," "pyrotechnic," and "a stunning (if quite morbid) black metal tour de force." His overall impression was one of surprise, making note of the fact that he based his initial impression on the artwork, which "elicit[ed] thoughts of simplistic black metal infused with pagan or anti- Christian messages." Despite these "twists and turns," Rivadavia found the album formulaic and rated the album 3.5/5. Mike Stagno, staff member for Sputnikmusic, praised Mäenpää's Wintersun, called the band "stronger" than Ensiferum, and described the sound as "combining the likes of neoclassical metal, folk metal, power metal, black metal, and melodic death metal".

Don Sumner of Best Horror Movies wrote that one can see the "influences of several other popular movies in the way the film’s story progresses and how the scenes are shot", making note of influences from Blade, where the protagonist is skilled in martial arts and, Underworld where vampires and werewolves have an eternal malice toward each other. He summarized by writing "The story is great and engrossing, the characters are interesting and the acting is very good – especially the ice-queen performance of Stephanie Beacham". Moria Science Fiction, Horror and Fantasy Film Review most enjoyed the way writer/director Eaves crafted a "back mythology" and appreciated that the background of the supporting characters was treated with depth and imagination. Noting that the action scenes felt like they were "boiler-plated in as set-pieces at regular intervals", they felt that they were "convincingly done and come with a stylish, well-choreographed kick".

Allmusic critic Stephen Thomas Erlewine considered the song a highlight on Chesney's album, making note of how Strait and Chesney both "playfully soften the F in the title, making for a genuinely funny highlight" (thus making the line sound closer to "shit work"). Brady Vercher of Engine 145 gave it a "thumbs-down" rating, saying, "What makes this a bad song is that it’s dull and boring, with zero redeeming qualities. If music is supposed to make you feel something, then this song captures the monotony of 'shiftwork,' but who in their right mind is going to want to be bored when they listen to a song?" Kevin John Coyne of Country Universe, gave the song a B grade, saying that " the ’big ol’ pile of shiiiiiftwork” wordplay in the chorus is funny. It doesn’t hold up much on repeated listenings, however" and that the song "still manages to become a song about getting drunk in the islands".

De Jong was instrumental in the development of Thialf as the premier skating rink in the Netherlands and, for the first years of its existence, a world-record setting rink: until the construction of rinks at higher altitude such as the rinks in Utah Olympic Oval near Salt Lake City and the Olympic Oval in Calgary, Thialf was the location for 35 world records, and De Jong is credited with a total of 38 world records. His importance to Thialf was recognized outside the Netherlands also, the German paper Die Welt, for instance, making note of his retirement in 2000. Despite the competition from high-altitude venues, Thialf remained (though by a small margin) the fastest oval in the world until at least 1993, for which De Jong was given credit--by that time producing the fastest surface possible had developed into a science. De Jong used ever-changing chemical mixtures instead of just water to create his ice, and was assisted by the School of Human Movement Sciences of the Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam.
