The US state of Virginia uses the term "cancellation" for equitable rescission. Furthermore, a minority of common law jurisdictions, like South Africa, use the term "rescission" for what other jurisdictions call "reversing", "overturning" or "overruling" a court judgment. In this sense, the term means to be set aside or make void, on application to the court that granted the judgment or to a higher court. Applications to rescind a judgment are usually made on the basis of error or for good cause.

Only in 1738 Assemani left Lebanon, where he had expressed strong resistance to certain decisions of the Synod; but due to other assignments received, he reached Rome only in 1741. Some years after the Synod, Joseph Dergham sent a petition to the Pope to support his views and to make void the decrees of the synod, however Pope Clement XII established a special commission of cardinals to investigate the acts of the Synod, this committee was confirmed by the next Pope Benedict XIV. Their acts were approved definitively, in their Latin translation, on 1 September 1741 with the papal bull Singularis Romanorum,vol. III, pp. 31-35.

Reports of increasing friction in the marriage appeared, with speculation that some of this may have also been due to financial resources not being as abundantly available to Alice as she was accustomed to in the past. In 1625, Bacon became estranged from his wife, apparently believing her of adultery with Underhill. He rewrote his will, which had been quite generous to her, leaving her lands, goods, and income, to revoke it all: > What so ever I have given, granted, conferred, or appointed to my wife in > the former part of this my Will, I do now for just and great causes, utterly > revoke, and make void, and leave her to her right only.

During the Interregnum Reade held two offices under the Commonwealth. He was appointed Commissioner for Hertfordshire in November 1650 and was Sheriff of Hertfordshire in the year 1655/1656. The creation of the baronetcy (as were all others after 4 January 1642) was disallowed by the Act to make void all Titles of Honours, Dignities, or Precedencies, given by the late King since the 4th January, 1642 on 4 February 1652, so the Lord Protector Oliver Cromwell gave him a new patent 25 June 1657 (this was the first hereditary honour bestowed by the Protector). The Cromwellian dignity was however, disallowed after the Restoration in May 1660, but, on the other hand, the disallowance of the former Baronetcy of 1642 then ceased, and he obtained a pardon on 7 June 1660, for all offences during the Civil War and the Commonwealth.

In the same meeting the Senate voted to prohibit all future Antonius descendants from using the name Marcus, the removal of all remaining statues of Antony and to make void any other honors that had been paid him. Many years later, Octavian came upon one of his grandsons reading a book by Cicero.
