McDonough performed toxicological analyses on stomach contents and dried sections of brain and found lethal levels of amitriptyline and nortriptyline. Insect feces, shed pupal cases of Megaselia scalaris (Diptera: Phoridae), and shed larval skins of Dermestes maculates (Coleoptera: Dermestidae) were gathered from the corpse at the scene. McDonough sent these to an FBI lab which broke down the complex structures of the samples using strong acids and bases and freed the toxins for analysis. The cast pupal cases and larval skins were also found to contain amitriptyline and nortriptyline.

This research found the Galapagos shark, Carcharhinus galapagensis increased in number in sanctuary zones, while there was an increase in abundance of the endemic double header wrasse, Coris bulbifrons, bluefish, Girella cyanea and the spotted sawtail, Prionurus maculates, in sanctuary zones. Negative outcomes have shown populations of the habitat modifying urchin, Centrostaphanus rodgersii, increased threefold between 2006-2010 and densities of the second most abundant urchin, Heliocidaris tuberculata, has doubled. If sea urchins become overpopulated, they can have major impacts on reef systems through overgrazing of important algae. Other negatives include a large and significant decline in population of bluefish within habitat protection zones.

Spotted-tail quolls (Dasyurus maculates), Tasmanian devils (Sarcophilus harrisii), and common wombats (Vombatus ursinus) have always been absent from the island. All twelve of Tasmania's endemic bird species are present, notably the forty-spotted pardalote (pardalotus quadragintus) for which the island is the main stronghold. Little penguins (Eudyptula minor) and hooded plovers (Thinornis rubicollis) also breed along the coast. Reptiles recorded include the tiger snake (Notechis scutatus), lowland copperhead (Austrelaps superbus) and white-lipped snake (Drysdalia coronoides). A colony of Australian fur seals (Arctocephalus pusillus) occupy The Friars; rocks that form the most southerly part of the park where they use the rocks as a ‘haul-out’.

Brush-tailed rock wallaby (Petrogale penicillata) Also on the list contained in the act are seven mammals. They are the; brushed tailed rock-wallaby (Petrogale penicullata), yellow-bellied glider (Petaurus australis), spotted-tailed quoll (Dasyurus maculates), long-nosed potoroo (Potoous trudactylus), eastern bent-wing bat (Miniopterus schreidersii), smoky mouse (Pseudomys fumeus), greater broad- nosed bat (Scoteanax rueppellii). The yellow-bellied glider (Petaurus australis) and eastern bristlebird (Dasyornis brachypterus) are amongst other local fauna species that are considered regionally endangered. It is integral to the continued survival of the yellow-bellied glider that the sap trees that are used by the glider as well as non-sap trees such as the grey gum (Eucalyptus punctata) are conserved.
