Many theologians consider the goodness of God as an overarching attribute - Louis Berkhof, for example, sees it as including kindness, love, grace, mercy and longsuffering.

There is an interesting myth behind the origin of Narambil Bhagavathy. One story says that this Amman (mother goddess) was originally a "Vana Durga", or "Forest Goddess". She was worshipped by a poor young lady who was married (by arrangement) to a very cruel and much older man who treated her terribly (a sad circumstance that many village girls may be scentenced to). The young woman was nevertheless patient and longsuffering, with her only solace being her own devotion to Narambil Bhadrakali.

This interpretation raises serious issues and presents a condemning and discriminating view of poor or disabled Christians in the apostolic times and throughout history. The source of abundant life is identified as the Spirit of God in Galatians 5:22-23, "the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance". A Christian is a person who has the Spirit of God (Romans 8:9) received according to the Biblical formula (Acts 2:38). Becoming a Christian means a change to a different way of life with a different purpose.

Potter strongly supported the United States government during the American Civil War. S. F. Hotchkin, The First Six Bishops of Pennsylvania (Diocese of Pennsylvania Church House, 1911), 25. After the war began, Potter's address to the next Diocesan Convention about the situation included these words: "Let us implore in behalf of all who are in civil or military authority the heavenly wisdom and longsuffering which they so much need." After President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, Potter saw the need to provide the Freedmen with food, education, and the Christian religion.

In 1978, longsuffering heroine Victoria "Viki" Lord Riley takes in 16-year-old goddaughter Tina Clayton as her ward after the death of Tina's mother, Irene Manning Clayton, Viki's best friend from her teenage years and college roommate. As Viki adjusts to the responsibility of raising a teenager, Marco Dane sees the perfect way to get revenge on Viki. Another resonance is with Exodus 34:6-7 and Deuteronomy 5:9-10, where God proclaims that he is merciful, gracious and longsuffering - extending mercy to 1,000 generations of those that love Him and obey His instructions, by forgiving their; iniquity, transgression and sin. However, as a righteous judge, He must eventually visit the unforgiven iniquity (which is a different Hebrew word than transgression and sin -Deuteronomy 24:16 ) to the "third or fourth" generation of those that continue to reject Him. The gardener pleads for mercy in the third year/generation and promises to create the best conditions for the fourth year/generation to bear the fruit of repentance before the full consequences of the iniquity would be realised.

" Prevenient Grace Such God-given grace explains the ability of humans to respond to God's calls to repent and believe. As stated in 2 Peter 3:9, "The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance. To Arminianism this verse and many similar verses evidence that the power to repent is within human free will as ordained by the sovereign God. Rather than accepting that "all" may repent, Calvinism teaches Limited Atonement to explain that 2 Peter 3:9 and similar salvation oriented verses, such as John 3:16, do not apply to "all" but only to those who God elected for salvation who must repent due to the Irresistibility of God's grace as directed to the elect.
