Caroline Sterling Choate, 1863 At the home of artist Thomas Prichard Rossiter, Caroline met lawyer Joseph Hodges Choate. He described Caroline in one of his frequent letters as "very fair haired and very light complexioned,... tall and rather slightly built, has dark brown eyes... She is the most graceful of women. Her self- possession and common sense are remarkable, and she has a force of character and a strength of will which few of her sex can boast." Choate later described himself as being "as earnestly devoted" to the law as Caroline was to art.

They were invited to perform in New York by George Walker but their father and manager insisted that they stay to finish their education, and the sisters continued performing in the south. After their father died in 1901, Mabel, Essie and Alberta formed the Whitman Sisters' Novelty Act Company in Augusta, Georgia, and the twelve- strong Whitman Sisters' New Orleans Troubadours in 1904. The sisters were light-complexioned - their mother may have been white - and were occasionally obliged to perform in blackface. They were described as "bright, pretty mulatto girls" with "wonderful voices".

He believes they could not have been Arabs or Bantus, but argues that the Berbers were well-known to Pliny's source people, the Carthaginians, so they would have recognized Berbers if they had met them. Morel concludes that the Leucaethiopes may have been early Fulani since the first record on West Africa (ca. 300 AD) describes an Empire governed by "white" rulers, which was established by a king whose name contains a Fulfulde affix.

The exonym is used by Pliny the Elder, and is also mentioned by Pomponius Mela, Ptolemy and Orosius. These authorities do not, however, agree on the geographical location of the White Aethiopians. Medieval geographers, including Ibn Hawqal and Leo Africanus, similarly noted the existence of various "white" or "olive" groups and individuals in territories and kingdoms south of the Sahara.

Leo Africanus, page 203 The 16th century explorer Leo Africanus described the existence of various "white" or "olive" groups and individuals inhabiting territories and kingdoms south of the Sahara.
