This hiding place became known as the Achterhuis (translated into "Secret Annex" in English editions of the diary). Their apartment was left in a state of disarray to create the impression that they had left suddenly, and Otto left a note that hinted they were going to Switzerland. The need for secrecy forced them to leave behind Anne's cat, Moortje.

Vocalist Siouxsie Sioux (real name Susan Ballion) and bassist Steven Severin (real name Steven Bailey) formed Siouxsie and the Banshees in September 1976, debuting with a lineup including guitarist Marco Pirroni and drummer Sid Vicious (real name John Ritchie). Two months after the performance, Pirroni and Vicious were replaced by Peter Fenton and Kenny Morris, respectively, although Fenton was sacked after a live show the following May due to stylistic differences with the other members. By July he had been replaced by John McKay, who also contributed saxophone to the group. The lineup of Sioux, McKay, Severin and Morris released two studio albums – 1978's The Scream and 1979's Join Hands – before McKay and Morris both left suddenly on the eve of the start of a UK tour in September 1979.

The Russian revolution alarmed governments across Europe: according to one source a report by the German General Staff concluded that "the circle around the Rubiners in Zürich can be seen as the headquarters of the international revolution" ("Als Zentrale der internationalen Revolution kann erachtet werden der Kreis um Rubiner in Zürich"). The Rubiners were aware of coming under intensified surveillance both by the Swiss authorities and by representatives of the German embassy. They were "spied upon" and their Zürich apartment was searched: it is not clear by whom, nor what the intruders were searching for: they appear not to have found it. Ferruccio Busoni, one of the Rubiner's closest friends during their Swiss exile, wrote a letter to his agent, Albert Biolley, in which he confided that he had himself been "left behind in Zurich" and that his friend Rubiner had left suddenly, without being able to explain why.

Irma had a brief fling with Ray Langton in 1971, but after the episode broadcast on 8 December (1137) Sandra Gough walked out and in the next episode Irma was said to have left suddenly and Maggie Clegg told Betty Turpin "all she said was she was going to stop with a friend for a bit" Irma never returned to Weatherfield and it was later revealed that she had contacted Maggie Clegg to buy her out of the shop and had moved to Llandudno in North Wales. She then emigrated to Canada and did not return for her father Stan's funeral in November 1984, much to the disappointment of her brother Trevor.

She became host of the XFM breakfast show on 31 October 2005 after Christian O'Connell moved to Virgin Radio, but left suddenly in April 2007 to pursue her television interests. However, Laverne went on to guest present on BBC Radio 2. Laverne joined BBC Radio 6 Music in June 2008 to present a Saturday weekend show before taking over the Monday to Friday morning (10:00 to 13:00) slot from George Lamb in November 2009. From January 2019, Laverne replaced Shaun Keaveny on the 6 Music Breakfast Show in a station schedule re-shuffle, which airs Monday - Friday, 07:30 to 10:30.
