Gunnard Winston Twyner (born July 14, 1973) is a former American football wide receiver in the National Football League who played for the Cincinnati Bengals and New Orleans Saints. He played college football for the Western Illinois Leathernecks. He also played in the Arena Football League for the Tampa Bay Storm and Buffalo Destroyers/Columbus Destroyers. Twyner is currently a coach for the Indianapolis Colts.
The Western Illinois Leathernecks softball team is a member of the Summit League, which is part of the National Collegiate Athletic Association's Division I. The team plays its home games at 500-seat Mary Ellen McKee Softball Stadium and are coached by Elizabeth Golitko. The team has appeared in eight Women's College World Series, in 1970, 1972, 1973, 1975, 1977, 1979, 1980 and 1982.

The 1958 NAIA Men's Basketball Tournament was held in March at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Missouri. The 21st annual NAIA basketball tournament featured 32 teams playing in a single-elimination format. The championship game featured returning champions, Tennessee State University who defeated the Western Illinois University. The Tigers won over the Leathernecks, it would be the third time a team won back-to-back championships.

They finished the season 1–11, 1–7 in MVFC play to finish in a two-way tie for ninth place.
The game was played at Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium and marked the first meeting between the two programs. The game started with a Taylor Rowan field goal to give the Leathernecks a 3–0 advantage. Joe Adams of Arkansas pulled in a 10-yard pass from Casey Dick with six minutes remaining in the second quarter. WIU's Herb Donaldson then scored twice, once before halftime, and once after.
In September 1950 it was announced Holt would support Montgomery Clift for director Nicholas Ray in The Flying Leathernecks (1951) but the film was made without either actor. Instead it was back to Westerns: Pistol Harvest (1951), Hot Lead (1951), Overland Telegraph (1951), Trail Guide (1952), Road Agent (1952), Target (1952), and finally Desert Passage (1952). The latter lost $30,000 so it was decided to end the series.
The 2013 Summit League men's soccer season will be the 8th season of men's varsity soccer in the conference. The venue for the 2013 Summit League Men's Soccer Tournament has yet been announced. The defending regular season champions are the Oakland Golden Grizzlies, but the school left for the Horizon League at the end of the 2012–13 school year. The Western Illinois Leathernecks are the defending tournament champions.

The 2009 Western Illinois Leathernecks football team represented Western Illinois University in the 2009 NCAA Division I FCS football season. The team was led by co-head coaches Mark Hendrickson and Don Patterson, who left the team late in the 2008 season due to health problems. The 2009 season was Patterson's last with Western Illinois. He coached the first three games before stepping down, ceding the head coaching duties to Hendrickson.
The two Republic films in which he starred were The Leathernecks Have Landed (1936) and King of the Newsboys (1938). Some of Flippen's most noteworthy film work came in support of James Stewart in five of the films the two made under the direction of Anthony Mann during the 1950s. He gave notable supporting performances in three John Wayne films: as a humorous, larcenous Marine air-crew line chief in Flying Leathernecks (1951), as Wayne's commanding general in Jet Pilot (1957), and as a wheelchair-bound senior partner of Wayne's in Hellfighters (1968).
King was then cast in 1951 as First Lieutenant Ernie Stark in the John Wayne and Robert Ryan film Flying Leathernecks, which focuses on the Battle of Guadalcanal in 1942. That same year he played Milo Pagano in the war film A Yank in Korea, starring Lon McCallister. In 1954 he was also cast in the role of Joe Branch, reputed son of Jesse James, for the 3D film Jesse James vs. the Daltons.
Russell was buried with military honors at Arlington National Cemetery. The Marine Corps League's Nittany Leathernecks Detachment #302 honored Russell with a scholarship in his name. The Scholarship was established to provide post secondary education financial support for children and grandchildren of Centre County Servicemen and women who served their country since September 11, 2001. The Centre County United Way Day of Caring was renamed to the Colonel Russell Day of Caring.
Pascoe attended Central High School in Traverse City, Michigan where he was a member of the school's baseball team. Upon graduation from high school, was intending to enroll at the University of Evansville to play baseball. After making 11 starts as a freshman, Poscoe became the starting catcher for the Leathernecks during the 2008 season. As a junior in 2009, he was named Second Team All-Missouri Valley Conference following the season.
The Western Illinois Leathernecks (Macomb) are full members of the Summit League, which does not sponsor football, and also compete in the MVFC. The Eastern Illinois Panthers (Charleston) are members of the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC). The city of Chicago is home to four Division I programs that do not sponsor football. The DePaul Blue Demons, with main campuses in Lincoln Park and the Loop, are members of the Big East Conference.
McKean, Hollister and Frank Knox were released from patrolling the Formosa Straits sometime after 8 December. Under a protective canopy of naval air cover, the leathernecks broke through 10 December at Chinhung-ni and moved to Hŭngnam for evacuation. The United States Navy completed the Hŭngnam withdrawal of 24 December after embarking 105,000 troops, 91,000 refugees and vast quantities of military cargo. Needing upkeep, McKean first ported at Yokosuka, then to Sasebo until 23 December 1950.
Flying Leathernecks is a 1951 Technicolor action war film directed by Nicholas Ray,Variety film review; July 25, 1951, p. 6.Harrison's Reports film review July 21, 1951, p. 114. produced by Edmund Grainger, (who had produced Sands of Iwo Jima) and starring John Wayne and Robert Ryan. The movie details the exploits and personal battles of United States Marine Corps aviators during World War II. Marines have long had the nickname "leatherneck", hence the title.
Her career started at the youth team of club RES in Bolsward. She then played for SC Heerenveen for one season, before returning to RES. In 2004 she played American college soccer for Western Illinois Leathernecks, returning to Europe in March 2006 for the second half of the 2005–06, joining German Bundesliga team FFC Heike Rheine. In 2007, Geurts returned to the Netherlands to play in the newly created professional league Eredivisie with AZ Alkmaar.
The 1984 AMCU-8 Men's Basketball Tournament was held March 8–10, 1984 at the Hammons Student Center at Southwest Missouri State University in Springfield, Missouri. This was the first edition of the tournament for the Association of Mid-Continent Universities, now known as the Summit League. defeated in the title game, 73–64, to win their first AMCU/Summit League championship. However, the Leathernecks did not earn a bid to the 1984 NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament.
Although fully aware of the danger involved, Platoon Sergeant Walton volunteered to reconnoiter the position of a troublesome Japanese machine gun nest threatening his platoon's right flank. Once he had spotted the weapon's location, he led a daring attack during which the leathernecks silenced the gun. Mortally wounded, however, Platoon Sergeant Walton died later that same day. Posthumous awards accorded the sergeant included the Navy Cross, the Purple Heart, and a share of the Presidential Unit Citation awarded the 1st Marine Division (Reinforced).
In the second game of the season against the Western Illinois Leathernecks (FCS), Gordon was held to a season-low 38 rushing yards on 17 rushing attempts. On September 20 against Bowling Green, Gordon had a career-high five rushing touchdowns and 253 rushing yards. Just two weeks later, Gordon surpassed his 253-yard game rushing against Bowling Green when he reached 259 yards rushing against Northwestern at Ryan Field in a losing effort. After week six Gordon was named to the CBSSports.
Burleson was born in Seattle, Washington. He was born to a prolific sporting family: his father, Al Burleson, played defensive back in the Canadian Football League (CFL) and the United States Football League (USFL). His older brother Alvin Jr. played college football for the University of Washington Huskies and the Western Illinois University Leathernecks. His younger brother Nate was a wide receiver in the National Football League (NFL), while younger brother Lyndale played college basketball for the University of Nevada Wolf Pack.
The Marine Corps JROTC has won top honors in the country over the past several decades, including the MCROA. The MCROA award is presented to the top JROTC Unit in their perspective region that has shown great acts of leadership, teamwork, and organization within their cadets. The Leatherneck and Lady Leatherneck Drill Teams have also received top honors and titles throughout the years. The Lady Leathernecks won the National High School Drill Team Championships in 1997 and consecutively since 2000.
Russell Walter Michna (born February 3, 1981) is a former arena football quarterback. A two-time league champion of the United Football League (UFL), he is the only player that has been signed to a team in every current major professional football league: National Football League (NFL), Canadian Football League (CFL), UFL and AFL. Michna also played in the Continental Indoor Football League (CIFL). Michna played college football for Western Illinois University, leading the Leathernecks to back-to-back I-AA Playoff appearances.
Michael McEachern (born June 8, 1986) is a current professional Flag Football player in the Dynasty Football league for team Southside & former professional Canadian football defensive back who played for the BC Lions. He was drafted by the Lions of the Canadian Football League in the third round of the 2008 CFL Draft. He played college football for the Western Illinois Leathernecks. He is the son of former CFL All Star Ken McEachern who played strong safety for the Saskatchewan Roughriders and the Toronto Argonauts.
Lee began her sports career as an assistant basketball coach for the Western Illinois Leathernecks women's basketball from 1987 to 1988. After leaving Western Illinois, she continued her assistant coaching tenure as a scout for the Iowa Hawkeyes from 1988 to 1995. When head coach Vivian Stringer left Iowa in 1995, Lee was the Hawkeye's interim head coach in July 1995 before her promotion to head coach in August 1996. She had 84 wins and 60 losses as Iowa's head coach before leaving the university in 2000.
Inspired by the surrounding “vast golden prairie strewn with purple coneflowers,” Western Illinois University adopted purple and gold as its official colors in 1902. WIU is the only non-military institution in the nation with permission from the Department of the Navy to use the United States Marine Corps Official seal and mascot, the Bulldog. Colonel Rock and Rocky, are the University mascots representing “The Fighting Leathernecks”. Colonel Rock and Rocky were named after Ray "Rock" Hanson, a former WIU athletic director and former Marine.
FJ-2s of VMF-122 on the in 1955. The squadron was reactivated in November 1947, flying the FH Phantom, becoming the first Marine squadron to employ jet-propelled aircraft. During this time, the squadron also fielded the first and only Marine aerial demonstration team known as the "Flying Leathernecks". They toured the country for two years before being disbanded with the transition to the F2H Banshee. In April 1951, the squadron became the first Marine jet squadron to be both day and night qualified for carrier operations.
On 28 August, 600 of Kawaguchi's troops were loaded onto the destroyers , , , and , designated Destroyer Division 20 (DD20). Because of a shortage of fuel, DD20 could not make the entire round trip to Guadalcanal at high speed in one night, but had to start the trip earlier in the day so that they could complete the trip by the next morning at a slower speed which conserved fuel. Zane Tamane (née Teilāne; born September 24, 1983) is a Latvian women's basketball player currently playing for Nadezhda Orenburg and Latvia women's national basketball team. Tamane, who is 2.00m tall, was the first female basketball player in Latvia to be able to slam dunk in practice. She has played for the Washington Mystics in the WNBA, and was in the 2012 training camp with the Phoenix Mercury, but was waived."2012 WNBA Transactions" May 25, 2012, WNBA web site She has also represented Western Illinois Leathernecks in the NCAA.
The enemy kept the pressure on the ridge throughout the night, at one point forcing a salient into the leathernecks' line, but were eventually driven back with heavy losses. The Japanese resumed the attack the following evening, throwing fresh troops into the fray. Artillery, mortars, small arms, and canister- firing 37-millimeter guns cut down the repeated Japanese assaults, forcing the decimated units to withdraw. Lt. Benner led his platoon in the fierce two days of combat on "Bloody Ridge,"and directed its fire against repeated assaults of enemy forces greatly superior in number.
All this came at a cost of 8 pilots and 17 radiomen and gunners killed in action. The squadron finally left the combat zone and returned to Marine Corps Air Station El Toro in June 1943 and were redesignated Marine Torpedo Bombing Squadron 131 VMTB-131. After a year of rest, refitting, and training, VMTB-131 again deployed to the Pacific Theater on March 29, 1944 this time on board the USS Petrof Bay.
Hecklinski played high school football in Palatine, Illinois, and was rated as the top quarterback prospect in the Midwest.("The former Palatine signal- caller – the most heavily recruited quarterback in the Midwest as a high school senior – transferred to Western Illinois after his sophomore year. Last year, when Illinois was going 2–9, he took the Leathernecks to a 9–3 record and a berth in the NCAA ...") SuperPrep magazine rated him as one of the top three prospects in the country. He enrolled at the University of Illinois in 1993.
He served for three years in the Corps obtaining the rank of captain. He wrote many articles for the Marine Corps Gazette one of which criticised the American military's awarding of decorations Winning Medals and Alienating People. Hubler also published a World War II history of Marine Aviation Flying Leathernecks: The Complete History of Marine Corps Aviation 1941–1944 in 1944. After the war, Hubler used his Marine experience as inspiration for his first novel published in 1946 I've Got Mine that was filmed as Beachhead in 1954.

He appeared in nearly two dozen of John Ford's films over twenty years, including She Wore a Yellow Ribbon (1949), The Quiet Man (1952), The Wings of Eagles (1957), and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962) with James Stewart. The first movie in which he called someone "Pilgrim", Ford's The Searchers (1956), is often considered to contain Wayne's finest and most complex performance.
Over his objections, RKO changed his marquee name to "Steven Flagg" to give his career a boost but little changed. Under this name he found work with former co-star Leon Errol in several of the star's short films. Producer Howard Hughes kept Michael under contract despite his lack of stature and following a few parts in such films as Easy Living (1949), Flying Leathernecks (1951), The Pace That Thrills (1952) and The French Line (1953), he was dropped. Quickly switching his stage name back to his real name, Michael moved more and more towards TV work.

When marines landed on Peleliu 15 September, planes from these carriers supported the efforts on shore until the determined leathernecks finally stamped out the last organized resistance of the dogged Japanese defenders. Hunt entered Kossol Passage 30 September to embark Admiral Halsey and his staff for passage to Peleliu. Hunt put him ashore that afternoon and steamed off shore as stand-by flagship until the following afternoon when he again came on board to be returned to Kossol Passage.
Mallory Boyle's layup with .3 seconds left gave Western Illinois its first-ever Division I postseason basketball victory, men's or women’s. Gravina's team broke five team records, including most points in a season (2,434) most 3-point field goals in a season (292), and most field goals in a season (856) while ranking in the top-10 all-time in seven additional categories. Gravina guided the Leathernecks to their best record under his direction in 2014-15, as the team finished tied for third in the league with a 9-7 mark and 17-13 overall.
After discharge from the AAF, Taylor was cast in a lead role as the young detective, Jimmy Halloran, working alongside veteran homicide detective Dan Muldoon (Barry Fitzgerald) in Universal's 1948 screen version of The Naked City, which was notable for being filmed entirely on location in New York. Taylor was later part of the ensemble cast in MGM's classic World War II drama Battleground (1949). He then appeared as the husband of Elizabeth Taylor in the comedies Father of the Bride (1950) and its sequel Father's Little Dividend (1951), starring Spencer Tracy. Another memorable role was Vern "Cowboy" Blithe in Flying Leathernecks (1951).
Mitchum initially appeared in only unbilled (e.g., Flying Leathernecks, RKO 1951) and extra roles before gradually receiving bigger character parts. He supported his more famous brother on several occasions, and became known as the friendly, food-loving Inspector Frank DiGiorgio in the first three Dirty Harry films. Mitchum was one of only six actors to appear in more than one film in this series (the others being Clint Eastwood, Harry Guardino, Albert Popwell, Bradford Dillman and Michael Currie), and with Eastwood, Currie, and Guardino, he was one of only four actors to play the same character in each appearance.
Asheville was based at Cavite into mid-October 1922; during this period, she conducted short range battle practice off Corregidor. However, unrest in China— due to a revolution in Fukien province, soon prompted her dispatch to Chinese waters with a detachment of Marines embarked. Departing the Philippines on 16 October, she sailed for Foochow, a major port city on the coast of China, and arrived soon thereafter, anchoring at the mouth of the Ming River. She landed her Marines on the day of her arrival, the Leathernecks transported up the river in motor sailers to Foochow.
James R. Molinari (born December 26, 1954) is an American basketball coach and lawyer. Molinari is an assistant coach at Oklahoma. He formerly served as an assistant coach at NebraskaNebraska Cornhuskers men's basketball and as former head coach of the Western Illinois University Leathernecks, where he served from 2008 to 2014. Prior to being named coach at WIU, Molinari was as assistant coach at Ball State University after serving as the interim head coach at the University of Minnesota, replacing Dan Monson on November 30, 2006 and being succeeded by Tubby Smith on March 22, 2007.GopherSports.
The releasing of the marines depended upon air cover from the aircraft carriers stationed off the eastern coast. James E. Kyes joined the task force on 1 December and provided anti-submarine warfare (ASW) support while aircraft made hundreds of sorties supporting the embattled marines. Under a protective canopy of naval air cover, the leathernecks broke through on 10 December at Chinhung-ni and moved to Hŭngnam for evacuation. James E. Kyes remained on guard as the Navy completed the Hungnam withdrawal of 24 December after embarking 105,000 troops, 91,000 refugees and vast quantities of military cargo.
He worked hard to have the Confederate Marine Corps receive the personnel, supplies and other benefits accorded to other branches of the military. The training of officers and enlisted Marines took place at the Marines' Barrack's Camp Beall, just a short distance south of Richmond, Virginia, at Drewry's Bluff overlooking the James River. By the end of the war, he had succeeded in helping improve the resources available to the Marine Corps and established a separate Marine training camp in Charleston, South Carolina; several permanent stations on the Mississippi River and Atlantic Seaboard. Thanks, in part, to Beall's efforts, the Confederate Marines, called the "Rebel Leathernecks",Donnelly, Ralph W.(1989).
Angie Lee (born 1962 or 1963) is the director of student affairs at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse since 2016. Before working at Wisconsin-La Crosse, Lee was an assistant coach with the Western Illinois Leathernecks women's basketball from 1987 to 1988 and a scout for the Iowa Hawkeyes women's basketball team from 1988 to 1995. Lee was promoted to head coach for Iowa in 1995 and was the 1996 Associated Press College Women's Basketball Coach of the Year. Upon her departure from Iowa in 2000, Lee was an assistant coach on the Virginia Tech Hokies women's basketball team from 2000 until she ended her coaching career in 2004.
Stickney was then appointed executive officer of 1st Engineer Battalion within 1st Marine Division under Major General Holland Smith in May 1941 and took part in exercises at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. Following the Japanese Attack on Pearl Harbor, Stickney was appointed Operations Officer of 1st Marine Regiment under Colonel James F. Moriarty in February 1942 and finally embarked for Pacific area in June of that year. After a brief period on New Zealand, Stickney landed with his regiment on Guadalcanal during the beginning of August 1942. Lt. Colonel William W. Stalmaster got his first job in show business as an actor, appearing in the war movies The Steel Helmet (1951) and The Flying Leathernecks (1951). He also acted in the TV series Big Town but soon became involved in the casting department of the same show. Stalmaster established himself quickly as a solid casting director, finding steady work in both television and motion pictures. The name Lynn Stalmaster became well known especially to cinema-goers of the 1970s, when he was credited with casting more than 60 movies of the decade, among them; Fiddler on the Roof, Harold and Maude, The Cowboys, Deliverance, Rollerball, Silver Streak, Black Sunday, Coming Home, Convoy, The Rose, Superman and Being There.
Hanson officially began his coaching career at Western after studying under Knute Rockne (hence the nickname "Rock"). Hanson had the distinction of being the football coach the first year that a black athlete, Ernest Page, played on Western's team, as well as having the longest tenure of any head football coach ever at Western. Hanson was the head football coach for at Western Illinois State Teachers College—now known as Western Illinois University—in Macomb, Illinois, serving for 16 seasons, from 1926 to 1941, and compiling a record of 56–59–12. Western Illinois Coaching Records Hanson gained permission from the Marine Corps to use the name "Fighting Leathernecks" for Western's teams.
2014-15 saw Luke earn Player of the Year while Tori Niemann earned honorable mention honors. 2013-14 was the first time WIU had three All- League honorees since 2003-04, as Luke (First Team) was joined by Tori Niemann and Michelle Maher (Honorable Mention). Gravina took his 2015-16 team to new heights, as the Leathernecks qualified for the 2015-16 Women's Basketball Invitational. The WBI bid was the first postseason bid under Gravina, Western's first in 10 years (2005–06), and just the fourth postseason tournament appearance in program history. Western's run to the postseason was highlighted by a first-round overtime victory over in-state rival Southern Illinois, 99-97.
F4U Corsair Vought F4U Corsairs featured in the latter part of the 1951 RKO war movie Flying Leathernecks which was directed by Nicholas Ray and starred John Wayne & Robert Ryan. The film's fictional Marine Air Corps unit exchange their older fighters for new F4Us as they support the drive across the Pacific in the latter stages of the war. For the film, the producers borrowed a number of flying F4Us which were then serving as trainers at the Marine Air Base at El Toro, California, and they also incorporated some wartime colour footage of F4Us taken during WW2.Carlson, Mark. Grumman F6F Hellcats appeared in the 1951 motion picture Flying Leathernecks directed by Nicholas Ray and starring John Wayne. One of the pilots who flew aircraft for the aerial scenes in the production was Marine Captain Phil De Groot who, after completing work on the film, flew in the Korean War and was wounded in action. The production was filmed at a small airstrip at Camp Pendleton, California. De Groot said, "They put some sand all over the strip, and some palm trees, and built a little pagoda there, simulating Guadalcanal..." F6Fs appear in the 1964 novel The Last Tallyho by Richard Newhafer, a work inspired by the author's real-life experiences as a Hellcat pilot during WW2.

Though over two hundred military units have been associated with Fort Queenscliff since the 1860s, two major groups of permanent soldiers have been based here: the coastal gunners of the artillery and their technical support provided by the sappers of the fortress engineers. Miles was named the Sycamores' 23rd head football coach on December 4, 2007. On October 24, 2009, in his second season, Miles earned his first collegiate head coaching victory, when the Sycamores defeated the Western Illinois Leathernecks by a score of 17–14 in the yearly homecoming game. WIU ranked in the top- two in six different categories, including leading the league in fewest turnovers committed per game (14), steals per game (8.4) and fewest fouls committed per game (15.1).
