In Britain, instead of abrasive buffing, a pad of pullover is used in much the same way as traditional French polishing. This slightly melts the sprayed surface and has the effect of filling the grain and burnishing at the same time to leave a 'French polished' look. Another reason shellac fell from favour is its tendency to melt under low heat; for example, hot cups can leave marks on it. However, French polish is far more forgiving than any other finish in the sense that, unlike lacquers, it can be easily repaired.
Pre- recorded sound effects on The Goon Show, played into each performance by 'Grams Operators', were taken from disc lacquers and shellac. The infamous 'Fred the Oyster' effect required declicking and decrackling as the source was a Columbia shellac 78. Kendall removed large and small clicks, and the crackle from all of The Goon Show sound effects, except those scratches which were part of the gag. Recently he has been responsible for the preparation of the Goon Show Compendium CD box sets, commencing in 2008 with Volume One.
Copaifera langsdorffii in a park in São Paulo, Brazil Copaiba is a stimulant oleoresin obtained from the trunk of several pinnate-leaved South American leguminous trees (genus Copaifera). The thick, transparent exudate varies in color from light gold to dark brown, depending on the ratio of resin to essential oil. Copaiba is used in making varnishes and lacquers. The balsam may be steam distilled to give copaiba oil, a colorless to light yellow liquid with the characteristic odor of the balsam and an aromatic, slightly bitter, pungent taste.
Phenyl salicylate, or salol, is a chemical substance, which was synthesized first in 1883 by the Polish chemist and doctor Marceli Nencki (who didn't publish his findings) and then independently in 1885 by the German chemist Richard Seifert (de) (1861–1919) (who did publish his findings). It is synthesized by heating salicylic acid with phenol. Once used in sunscreens, phenyl salicylate is now used in the manufacture of some polymers, lacquers, adhesives, waxes, and polishes. Commonly it is used in school laboratory demonstrations on how cooling rates affect crystal size in igneous rocks.
Finishing the work is often necessary when working in metal that may rust or where a colored finish is desirable, such as a firearm. A variety of spray lacquers and finishing techniques exist to seal and protect the work from exposure to the elements and time. Finishing also may include lightly sanding the surface to remove small chips of metal called "burrs" that are very sharp and unsightly. Some engravers prefer high contrast to the work or design, using black paints or inks to darken removed (and lower) areas of exposed metal.

The Clairol ad campaign, "Does she ... or doesn't she?" boosted hair color product sales not just for their company, but across the hair dye industry. The bouffant style relied on the liberal use of hairspray to hold hair in place for a week. Hairspray lacquers of this era were of a different chemical formula than used today, and were more difficult to remove from the hair than today's products.

On 9 January 1971, a great fire destroyed part of a caravan factory, a branch plant of Wilk-Caravaning GmbH, on Kellenbach's northern outskirts. The blaze was started by flying sparks in the fitter's shop, which set some nitrocellulose lacquers alight. An employee who lived on the factory lands noticed the fire in good time and notified the fire brigade. Because it was Saturday, the Kellenbach Volunteer Fire Brigade began very quickly with the job of quenching the fire, even before the Kirn, Gemünden and Pferdsfeld fire brigades could reach the fire.
One of the most abundant chemicals found at Sharkey Landfill was toluene (about 560,000 pounds), a hydrocarbon with the chemical formula C7H8. Toluene forms naturally within crude oil, and is used not only as a cleaning solution, but is also used in my other industrial products such as; medicine, wall and spray paints, paint thinner, dyes, explosives, fingernail polish, spot removers, lacquers, adhesives, rubber, detergents, antifreeze, and also in some printing and leather tanning processes. Toluene’s most abundant use is in the production of benzene, another chemical found at the site.

Paints and lacquers are coatings that mostly have dual uses of protecting the substrate and being decorative, although some artists paints are only for decoration, and the paint on large industrial pipes is presumably only for the function of preventing corrosion. Functional coatings may be applied to change the surface properties of the substrate, such as adhesion, wettability, corrosion resistance, or wear resistance. In other cases, e.g. semiconductor device fabrication (where the substrate is a wafer), the coating adds a completely new property, such as a magnetic response or electrical conductivity, and forms an essential part of the finished product.

A national industrial promotion exposition in Tokyo in 1881 provided, for many people, their first exposure to Ryukyuan arts. Following World War II and the extensive destruction incurred in the islands during the battle of Okinawa, a number of surveys have been undertaken to learn more about Ryukyuan lacquer (and a great many other cultural and historical subjects), and to discover and collect objects displaced during and following that struggle.
Disposable putty knives, known for having a recyclable straight handle and blade, are suitable for hundreds of home and workplace chores, such as gently removing decals, water sealing a small crack or filling a chipped walk to avoid slips and falls. Plastic putty knives are sometimes substituted for metallic ones because they are resistant to electrical shock. However, disposable putty knives can be damaged from extreme heat, and should be kept a safe distance from furnaces, stoves, hot water heaters, and other high heat sources. Thinning solvents and degreasers in certain oven cleaners and lacquers may weaken various putty knives and are not recommended for combined use.

After receiving his diploma, he continued his education at the University of Manitoba School of Art and was there exposed to other modernist movements such as Vorticism.ref> In 1953 Tascona began work as a technician for Trans-Canada Airlines where he developed his skills and interest in working with a variety of industrial techniques and materials including a fascination with aluminum, high-grade paints, lacquers and enamels.ref> This formation of interest extended to his brother's auto-body garage, where Tascona became interested in the use of car paint, borrowing paint chips and supplies for use in his own studio.
Utilizing the skills he learned in the aircraft industry, Tascona began in the late 1960s and would continue throughout the 70's and 80's to produce large format constructions built from incised metal sheets painted with industrial strength paints and lacquers giving these works a sculptural, frieze-like quality while still possessing certain modernist formal elements. Brushes used for figure painting vary by the type of paint used and techniques employed. For paints that require specific chemical thinners, such as enamels, lacquers, and oils, synthetic fiber brushes are often recommended for longer life as the thinners can cause natural fibers to deteriorate over time, although natural bristle brushes are often used for finer details. For acrylic paints that can be thinned with water there is less concern about bristle deterioration. Many acrylic painters consider kolinksy sable watercolor brushes the be the best quality brushes for painting, as they offer a great deal of control over the flow of paint and a sharp, precise tip for painting fine details.
Marcel Wolfers began his artistic career before World War I. He produced several works in 1908 and 1909. Early on, he showed most of his interest in ceramics and began experimenting with lacquers and their ability to produce brilliant colors. At the outbreak of World War I in 1914, when Belgium was invaded by the German armies, he joined the Belgian cavalry, eventually rising to the rank of lieutenant. In preparation for a record pressing, acetates are used for quality control prior to the production of the stampers, from which retail copies of the record will be pressed. The purpose of the test acetate(s) (called, 'reference disks') in the mastering process is to allow the artist, producer, engineer, and other interested parties to check the quality of the tape-to-disc recording process and make any necessary changes to ensure that the audio fidelity of the master disc will be as close as possible to that of the original master tape. The actual stamper sets can be made either from oversized lacquers or from DMM blanks (see Direct Metal Mastering).

In 1983 Mossman decided to sell the company after suffering from serious respiratory problems. Mossman began to feel that his breathing was being affected by years of inhaling 'sawdust, lacquer fumes and ablaone shell fragments'. In a press release issued by the guitar publication, Frets, Mossman stated: > It is with a great deal of sadness that I must write this letter, for it > closes a chapter of nearly 20 years in my guitar making life. Totem cabinets are made to be inert but also harmonically expressive, which means creating synergy between veneers, stains, and lacquers. Lock mitred, monocoque construction is an intricate woodworking method in which a zigzag pattern is cut into the ends of panels so they provide substantially more surface area on each joining piece and in turn have more area to grip and physically lock together in a much stronger fashion. They are finally glued together at a 90-degree angle, making the Totem cabinet up to 5 times stiffer than conventional cabinet assembly. The medium density fiberboard (MDF) used is a unique recipe with a density of 90% on the exterior speaker side and 65% towards the interior.
Through his experiment Herschel found that red light had the highest degree of temperature change in the light spectrum, however, infrared heating was not commonly used until World War II. During World War II infrared heating became more widely used and recognized. The main applications were in the metal finishing fields, particularly in the curing and drying of paints and lacquers on military equipment. Banks of lamp bulbs were used very successfully; though by today's standards the power intensities were very low, the technique offered much faster drying times than the fuel convection ovens of the time. After World War II the adoption of infrared heating techniques continued but on a much slower basis.

He invented a method of painting with lacquer sap directly on paper sized with dōsa (a solution of alum and animal glue), to prevent flaking when his urushi-e scroll paintings were rolled up.

This was used commercially as 'celluloid', a highly flammable plastic used until the mid-20th century for lacquers and photographic film. On May 2, 1887, Hannibal Goodwin filed a patent for "a photographic pellicle and process of producing same ... especially in connection with roller cameras", but the patent was not granted until September 13, 1898. In the meantime, George Eastman had already started production of roll-film using his own process. Nitrocellulose was used as the first flexible film base, beginning with Eastman Kodak products in August, 1889.
Paint choices in the American automotive industry, as well as in others (including locomotives, furniture, bicycles, and the rapidly expanding field of electrical appliances), were shaped by the development of the chemical industry. These included the disruption of dye sources during World War I and the advent, in the mid-1920s, of new nitrocellulose lacquers that were faster-drying and more scratch-resistant, and obviated the need for multiple coats;. understanding the choice of paints for the Model T era and the years immediately following requires an understanding of the contemporary chemical industry. During the lifetime production of the Model T, over 30 types of black paint were used on various parts of the car.
Gothic Revival Angelus Carriage Clock Falize's makers mark, circa 1878-1880 Lucien Falize was heavily influenced by his visits to London in 1861 and 1862, where he went to the National Gallery, Westminster Abbey, and the Crystal Palace. He was struck by the Chinese, Indian, Assyrian, and Egyptian exhibits, and at the International Exhibition he was impressed by the Oriental lacquers, enamels, bronzes, prints, and earthenware taken from the collection of Sir Rutherford Alcock. Due to his ties to the firm, Falize was unable to travel to Japan, but his passion for the East began to manifest through his designs. Pendants, bracelets, necklaces, and brooches with a distinct Oriental effect began to emerge.
As a result, there are many works in which relatively vivid gold and silver patterns and pictures shine on the black base of lacquerware, and the entire lacquerware is covered with shiny gold and silver grains. The 17th-century term "japanning" refers to a range of techniques to imitate various Asian lacquerware, but especially those developed in Europe and Great Britain to resemble lacquerware imported from the Orient. These commonly employed a black, oil-based varnish ("Japan black", "Brunswick black", etc.) on wood and later metal substrates, eventually finding a variety of 19th- and early-20th-century industrial applications. Japan black was famously Ford's preferred automotive finish until the advent of quick-drying, variously colored nitrocellulose lacquers.
As a result, horse-mounted samurai were no longer the main military force. During the Edo period (1603 to 1868) horses were no longer needed for warfare and the samurai started using highly decorated kura with colored lacquers, and extensive intricate inlays and leather work. Various sources, contemporary and non-contemporary, refer to this information, in particular Lanzi. Included in the large roster of Club acts were artists such as Frankie Vaughan and entertainers Cannon and Ball, when at the peak of their Saturday night TV success, in the early 1980s, he co-wrote and produced Cannon and Ball's Rock On Tommy single. The album received a Silver disc presented by Chris Tarrant on the popular ATV Saturday morning programme Tiswas. Apart from music production, SRT was one of the first manufacturing brokers, and had a close relationship with Abbey Road Studios, where artists were encouraged to attend cutting of the pressing lacquers for their forthcoming vinyl releases. With no complete record of all SRT's early releases, some online sources have started to catalogue many of the vintage SRT vinyl products.

This album was originally released on New Zealand label Flying Nun Records in 1985. The first pressing was 667 copies made at the now closed EMI pressing plant in Lower Hutt, NZ. A mint copy of the 1985 vinyl was "needle drop" transferred to digital files at Shadoks Music Studio, Amrum, Germany. Then it was mastered at Fir International, Zaandam, Netherlands, and lacquers cut at Prairie Cat Mastering, Belvidere, Illinois, U.S. The vinyl was pressed at Record Technology Inc., in Camarillo, California, U.S. A four-piece AXEMEN incarnation featuring McCabe, Kawowski, Stojanovic and newcomer William Daymond toured Australia in December 2011, a new line up that added William Daymond on bass guitar, allowing Dragan Stojanovic to resume his lead guitar duties.
In 1958, Lefkovitz was awarded an Arts Teachers Fellowship by the Canada Council to return to Mexico for a year, allowing her to devote all her time and attention to art for the first time. In Mexico City, she experimented with different lacquers under Professor José L. Gutiérrez at the Instituto Politécnico Nacional, and further mastered her mural technique. In 1959, Lefkovitz returned to her bookkeeping job in Montreal, painting in whatever spare time she had.
Japan black's popularity was due in part to its durability as an automotive finish. However, it was the ability of japan black to dry quickly that made it a favorite of early mass-produced automobiles such as Henry Ford's Model T. The Ford company's reliance on Japan black, led Henry Ford to quip "Any customer can have a car painted any colour that he wants so long as it is black". While other colors were available for automotive finishes, early colored variants of automotive lacquers could take up to 14 days to cure, whereas japan black would cure in 48 hours or less. Thus variously colored pre-1925 car bodies were usually consigned to special orders, or custom-bodied luxury automobiles.

Manufacture of machinery, machine tools and parts except electrical machinery together with the iron and steel industry and metal products are the most important and the biggest group of industries in the district and includes manufacture of Prime movers, Boilers, Refrigerators, Machine Tools, Computing and Accounting machinery, Industrial machinery for food and textile industries, machinery for chemicals, paper and cement industries. Manufacture of basic industrial chemicals including fertilizers, vegetable and animal oils and fats, paints, varnishes and lacquers and other miscellaneous chemical products is another important industry in the district. These industries are mainly concentrated in the Trans-Thane Creek and Belapur Road industrial area.
However, cheaper and more abrasion- and chemical-resistant finishes, such as polyurethane, have almost completely replaced it in decorative residential wood finishing such as hardwood floors, wooden wainscoting plank panelling, and kitchen cabinets.
