As a carnivore, it feeds on aquatic insects, young shrimp and smaller fishes. However, it can also eat rice bran, kitchen refuse, fish meal, or formulated feeds. In turn, the fish is attacked by Achlya, Aphanomyces, and Pythium. In the wild, the fish spawns in small streams.

Pig swill, hog swill, or hogwash is kitchen refuse used to feed pigs. Historically, pig farmers arranged collection of swill, e.g. by means of swill bins. The grease was skimmed off the swill tanks and sold for further processing, while the remaining swill was processed into pig food.

Pail closets were used to dispose of human excreta, dirty water, and general household waste such as kitchen refuse and sweepings. The pail closet system was one of several methods of waste disposal in common use in the 19th century, others of which were the privy midden system, the pail system, and the dry-earth system.

Often refuse was placed in unusable areas just outside the city, such as wetlands and tidal zones. One example is London, which from Roman times disposed of its refuse outside the London Wall beside the River Thames. Another example is 1830s Manhattan, where thousands of hogs were permitted to roam the streets and eat garbage. A small industry developed as "swill children" collected kitchen refuse to sell for pig feed and the rag and bone man traded goods for bones (used for glue) and rags (essential for paper manufacture prior to the invention of wood pulping).

"AP Bank" took its name from Sakamoto's Artists Power but also stands for Alternative Power. AP Bank initially operated only on its founding member's capital, refusing to accept investment from the general public, in order to test the initiative.

Several gravel pits have obscured what may have been a moat and this site could have been the site of a fort or a castle mound. In 1939 archaeological excavations revealed a wood lined shaft in the north-west side of the sandpit and a fragment of a Medieval jug was discovered within, raising the suggestion that this site had been used as a kitchen- refuse dump for Borland Castle. The kitchen of East Borland Farm holds a stone located over the fireplace, presently hidden under interior decoration, that was recovered from the old castle and carved upon it are to the left the initials H. M. and on the right M. H. with the date 1677 in the centre.

During prehistoric times Negrine was within the Capsian cultural area, which lasted from ca. 8500 BC to 5400 BC.G.
