Episode 8, titled "Jezebels," has all the makings of a stellar episode.

The world now understands the true plight of the Handmaids, Marthas, Jezebels, and Unwomen under its regime.

That's something "Jezebels" could have hit home if it wanted to, and even suggests in some asides.
|
|
By the finale, she's escaped from Jezebels, the nightclub where she works, and reached a refugee center in Canada.
|
|
But what happens at Jezebels is a form of ritualized rape that's just as harrowing as what the handmaids experience.
|
|
"Jezebels," which is a perfect name for this episode (but more on that later), reveals the seedy underbelly of repressive Gilead.
|
|
While jezebels were rooted in hypersexual stereotypes about black women, the "mammy" stereotype framed black women as heavyset, asexual caretakers of white families.
|
|
But the number of objects that dehumanize African-Americans far outnumber those of any other group; Mammies, Piccaninnies, Sambos, Sapphires, Jezebels, Toms, Coons were an industry.

"Jezebels" shows us Nick maneuvering alone, whether in the black market or in the bosom of the men out to purge Gilead of all these corrupt influences.
|
|
For an episode that's all about how women are cast aside in favor of serving men, "Jezebels" kinda casts its women aside in favor of serving the men!
|
|
The cookie is shaped like the music box that we were first introduced to in the episode "Jezebels," in which Offred accompanies the Commander to a state-run brothel.
|
|
She gets a few harrowing moments (particularly when she returns to Jezebels with Fred and sees Moira again) that allow Elisabeth Moss to showcase her impressive skills as an actress.
|
|
The only other time she has looked so shell-shocked was after two weeks in her room: Solitude is more terrifying to Offred than almost anything that's happened so far—until the Jezebels, anyway.

But at the beginning of "Jezebels," as Offred climbs out of bed with Nick, her hair cascades across her back in a perfect Veronica Lake wave, the kind that no one's hair achieves naturally, the kind you get with a curling iron.

But she acknowledged that the popularity and durability of those shows over the last 40 years showed an eager audience among Italians, many of whom still think of women in archetypes of care-taking madonnas or corrupting Jezebels, with little room in between.

Jezebels are women who are forced to become prostitutes and entertainers. They are available only to the Commanders and to their guests. Offred portrays Jezebels as attractive and educated; they may be unsuitable as handmaids due to temperament. They have been sterilized, a surgery that is forbidden to other women.

The blood- soaked Maggie becomes hysterical as she and the rest of the gang are loaded into the back of a police van, screaming threats that the Jezebels will one day return.

Poppy & the Jezebels were a pop band based in Birmingham, United Kingdom. Members were Mollie Kingsley (vocals, bass keyboard, theremin), Miss Amber Bradbury (guitar), Poppy Twist (drums, theremin), and Dom Vine (keyboards, synthesiser, vocals).

Back at the Jezebels' hideout, Lace and Patch attempt to convince the gang that Maggie was the traitor. The members refuse to believe Lace's assertions, and a knife fight ensues between Lace and Maggie. Maggie fatally stabs Lace in the throat, prompting a police strike force that had been surrounding the building to storm in and arrest everyone. The various members of the gang proudly proclaim themselves as members of the Jezebels, but when Patch attempts to identify herself as part of the gang to the police, the remaining members disavow any knowledge of her.

They operate in unofficial but state-sanctioned brothels, unknown to most women. Jezebels, whose title also comes from the Bible (note Queen Jezebel in the Books of Kings), dress in the remnants of sexualized costumes from "the time before", such as cheerleaders' costumes, school uniforms, and Playboy Bunny costumes. Jezebels can wear make-up, drink alcohol and socialize with men, but are tightly controlled by the Aunts. When they pass their sexual prime and/or their looks fade, they are discarded without any precision as to whether they are killed or sent to the Colonies in the novel.

Readers responded by pointing out that the deleted articles were not hot takes. Switchblade Sisters is a 1975 action and exploitation film detailing the lives of high school-aged female gang members. It was directed by Jack Hill and stars Joanne Nail, Robbie Lee and Monica Gayle. The film is also known as The Jezebels, Maggie's Stiletto Sisters, and The Warriors II: Las Navajeras. The movie was not a success at the box office,Jack Hill on Switchblade Sisters at Trailers From Hell accessed 10 June 2012 but garnered a cult following later on.

Reality television shows such as Bad Girls Club, The Real Housewives of Atlanta, and Love & Hip Hop have received criticism and been discussed for their portrayal of Black women, many of whom are depicted as Sapphires, Mammies, and Jezebels. This has led to people, such as Donnetrice Allison, associate professor of Communication Studies and Africana Studies at Stockton University, to state that these shows serve as a new platform for these archetypes to thrive in modern day culture and society.

A 1944 review from The Rotarian praised the novel, calling it "absorbingly dramatic" and citing its realism as a highlight. Johnson remarks that Smith refrained from portraying Nonnie in any of the then typical "racist stereotypes of black women as either mammies or Jezebels", making her "closer to images of the 'ideal' white woman: beautiful, kind, compassionate, and loving. For Smith, Nonnie simply happens to be black". Johnson further wrote that Nonnie was not written to be ashamed of her blackness, nor written to be an "honorary white woman".

During the first weeks of the school year, confraternity alumni and members swarm campuses recruiting new members. Initiation ceremonies normally involve severe beatings, in order to test their endurance, as well as ingestion of a liquid mixed with blood. Male initiates may sometimes be required to pass an additional hurdle before becoming full members, including raping a popular female student or a female member of the university staff. Among the all-female Jezebels or Amazons, prospective members may be required to undergo six rounds of rough sexual intercourse or fight with against a group of women or against a much stronger man.

The appearances of women in the nineteenth century have been described as “[Especially] fraught with volatile meanings, as the line between seemingly overly sexual or appearing presumptuously dressed above one’s station was a fine one.” African-American women struggled with receiving the respect they deserved even if they dressed the part of a lady. This was due to “Shadowed stereotypes bred in slavery of wanton Jezebels and pious Mammies…” If free African-American women dressed out of their respective class, judgments would be made against them.

While Lace recuperates in the hospital, Maggie assumes leadership of the gang, expels the men and changes its name to The Jezebels. She teams up with Muff (Marlene Clark) and her gang of African- American militants from across town to ambush Crabs. All the while, Maggie suspects that someone in her group tipped Crabs off to their plans at the roller rink, not knowing that Patch has already uncovered the real traitor: Lace, who organized the ambush to get Maggie killed in revenge for her stealing Dom and for assuming the role of leader of the Dagger Debs. Patch agrees to cover for Lace and, after the ambush proves successful, she shoots Crabs before he can confess to Maggie.

They are the only class of women in Gilead permitted to read, albeit specifically to fulfill the administrative role of their caste. Jezebels, often former career professionals or academics unwilling or unable to accept any role in Gilead, are forced into prostitution in secret brothels catering to the elite ruling class as an alternative punishment to being executed or sent to the Colonies. They wear otherwise forbidden evening clothes, costumes, and lingerie from “before”. Among the men of Gilead other than the Commanders, the Eyes are secret police watching over the general populace for signs of rebellion, Hunters track down people attempting to flee the country, Guardians are responsible for civilian policing and Economen are responsible for menial labor.

Spins Jason Gubbels stated that it is "a low-heat ode to high-heat passion, about as edgy as a Broadway revival cast recording and featuring one of the more dubious name-verbing exercises in contemporary pop" since Beyoncé's "Partition" (2013). "Marvin Gaye" made it on several year-end lists of the worst songs of 2015. Time included the song, calling the first line of its chorus so "cringe- worthy" that it made them wonder "why the Gaye estate didn't also sue these two in addition to the "Blurred Lines" guys" for tarnishing his legacy, but called Trainor its redeeming quality. It also appeared on Jezebels list, with Tolentino calling it "transposed to the ninth circle of hell" and comparing it to Christian musicals she used to attend as a child.
