In March 2010, it was announced that Paramount Pictures would launch a new division named Insurge Pictures, which would produce micro-budget films based on Paramount's success with the micro-budget Paranormal Activity. The first film produced by Paramount Insurge was Never Say Never (2010), a documentary film featuring Justin Bieber. Prior to the release of the film, Insurge released "Grease: The Sing-A-Long," which had a limited release. In 2011, it was announced that Insurge wrapped an at the time untitled project about a destination wedding.

In January 2011, it was announced Insurge was releasing The Devil Inside. In 2012, Insurge released The Loved Ones, and Katy Perry: Part of Me. Insurge also produced a mockumentary reality series, Burning Love, which was re-adapted in 2013 into a regular series for E!. In 2015, it was announced that Insurge would be releasing Area 51 and Drunk Wedding on May 15, and May 22, 2015 in a limited release exclusively at Drafthouse Theaters and through video on demand providers. Both projects were shelved prior to their releases.

Insurge, commonly typeset iNsuRge, were a political industrial rock band founded in 1994 by singer-songwriter-guitarist Chris Dubrow (ex-Soulscraper). Other founders were Mattieu MacRoth on bass guitar, Matt Richmond on drums, Paul Bianco on found Percussion and Monique Wakelin on keyboards.iNsuRge I.M.F. EP (1994) Liner Notes Their debut album Power to the Poison People was released in August 1996, which reached No. 16 on the ARIA Albums Chart. The singles were 'Feast or Famine' (1999) and 'Images of London' (2000), the latter a dance version of the song written by Indigenous Australian singer-songwriter Kev Carmody. Midway through 1999 there was yet another change to the line-up, with Sean Burnett taking the percussion role.. Insurge announced their break-up in 2000 at their final show at the Newtown Festival, Sydney. In 2009 Insurge announced their reformation and in 2012 were billed as the support act for another reunion tour by 1990s band Def FX.

According to The Hollywood Reporter in 2014, Paramount is developing a remake of Explorers through their low-budget label Insurge Pictures written by Geoff Moore and Dave Posamentier and produced by Josh Appelbaum and Andre Nemec. 10 Cloverfield Lane originated from an "ultra low budget" spec script penned by Josh Campbell and Matt Stuecken, titled The Cellar. The Tracking Board included the script in "The Hit List" of 2012 – an annually published list of spec scripts written within the year that have impressed its voting members. In 2012, Paramount Pictures bought the script and commenced further development under Bad Robot Productions for Insurge Pictures, Paramount's specialty label for films with a micro-budget. When Bad Robot became involved, the film was assigned the codename Valencia to keep exact details of the production a secret.

In a March 2015 interview, a few months after production wrapped, Winstead was asked about her experience during Valencia and described it as a "really contained film", reiterating the premise of The Cellar about a woman being trapped with her mysterious savior in a supposed post-nuclear fallout world. Later in the month, Insurge Pictures was reported to have been dismantled and its staff absorbed by its parent company. Insurge's only film that had yet to be released was reported to be Valencia. Speaking of rewrites that took place during production, Winstead called them "nothing that was major".

The script was acquired by Paramount Pictures and Bad Robot in 2012. It had been initially planned as part of Paramount's low-budget InSurge distribution label, but following the folding of that label, its production was expanded as a Paramount-distributed film. Only during production did Abrams decide to link the film to Cloverfield, adapting Uziel's screenplay and adding scenes to establish the connection, after the same approach was used to alter 10 Cloverfield Lane from its original script, The Cellar. Abrams saw the particle accelerator accident as a cinematic means for future events to cause changes in the past, narratively linking the Cloverfield franchise together.

The film was announced in November 2012, under the title God Particle, based on a script by Oren Uziel and to be directed by Julius Onah. With J.J. Abrams' Bad Robot Productions as the production studio, it was set to be released under Paramount's InSurge label, limiting the film's budget to $5–10 million. At this stage, the film was established to take place on a space station in Earth's orbit and a resulting incident that causes the crew to find Earth has gone missing. Uziel said that his script had been a spec script he wrote about one year after finishing up a similar spec script for Shimmer Lake.

Just prior to the release of the band's second EP there was a shift in the line-up with original percussionist Paul Bianco leaving the band to be replaced by Adam Logan. The second E.P. 'Political Prisoners' (1995) saw Insurge begin to work with producer Kalju Tonuma, ( The Mavis's, 28 Days, Bodyjar, Killing Joke). The title track became the band's breakthrough song, gaining considerable airplay from alternative radio across Australia and New Zealand.
