The "you are rock and roll" middle eight from Innocences "Volcano" is re-used as the chorus for "American Soul". The "free yourself to be yourself" chant-along from Innocences "Iris (Hold Me Close)" is reprised in "Lights of Home". "13 (There Is a Light)" reprises the chorus from Innocences "Song for Someone"; "13" had originally been in consideration to close Songs of Innocence but was ultimately dropped.

The same day as Songs of Innocences digital release, Irish public service broadcaster RTÉ played the record in its entirety on RTÉ 2fm. This was in line with a long-standing tradition of U2 giving the station's DJ Dave Fanning the exclusive to play their new albums before any other broadcaster.

Allen is estimated to be 15 years old when the series begins. Allen is often accompanied by Timcampy, a small flying golem given to him by his mentor Exorcist General Cross Marian. The setting's political and cultural history is also markedly different. The philosophy of communism was founded by an economist and a historical materialist named Kras Mazov, and rather than being associated with the color red and symbols like hammer and sickle, the ideology is instead represented by the color white and symbolised by deer antlers surrounding a pentagram. Moralism, meanwhile, despite being a centrist ideology, also has religious overtones and connotations, since it is associated with the setting's largest religion, Dolorianism, the dominant feature of which are the so-called "Innocences", saint-like figures, who also wielded great religious and political power while they were alive, akin to the position of pope. The greatest and most influential amongst the historical Innocences is Dolores Dei, a woman of mysterious origins, who allegedly had glowing lungs and founded many of the world's modern institutions.

The first season of the D.Gray-man anime series, was directed by Osamu Nabeshima and produced by TMS Entertainment. The series adapt Katsura Hoshino's manga with the same name. The season follows the first adventures of Allen Walker, an Exorcist that wields the power of "Innocence" to fight against The Millennium Earl, an ancient sorcerer seeking to destroy the world with monsters called Akuma. Joining an organization of Exorcists known as the "Black Order", Allen teams up with multiple soldiers to collect other Innocences.

Ultimately, Innocence was considered a success by the company, selling approximately 246,000 copies and exceeding their sales forecasts for the title. Innocence R reached #3 in the Japanese sales charts in its opening week, coming behind Armored Core V and Resident Evil: Revelations and selling 54,853 copies. By July of that year, Innocence R was the sixth best-selling title for the Vita, with total sales of 74,718 copies. Famitsu praised Innocences high-polygon character models, and the story and characters, which were generally engaging and entertaining.
