In January 1924, a young Bengalee Gopi Mohan Saha shot dead a European he mistook to be Calcutta Police Commissioner Charles Tegart. The assassin was openly praised by the Bengali press and, to Gandhi's chagrin, proclaimed a martyr by the Bengal provincial branch of the Congress. Around this time Jugantar became closely associated with the Calcutta Corporation, headed by Das and Subhas Chandra Bose. Bose apparently ‘‘met with active revolutionaries and knew in a general way what they planned to do’’.

I now come to the positive reason which motivated my decision to issue this Motu Proprio updating that of 1988.

The Forces of the Business Cycle, 1922 Rorty was inspired by the early work Wesley Clair Mitchell had published on business cycles, and in the 1920s became involved in specifying the processes involved in business cycles. The introduction to a 1921 interview with Rorty on this subject characterized the state of the art by then as follows: > Economic subjects subjects have become such a matter of popular interest > that even the “man on the street” knows in a general way that business moves > in cycles. He knows that when statisticians make a map or rather present a > picture 0f business variations covering a period of years the portrait is a > snaky curve that undulates up and down across an imaginary normal line, with > peaks representing “prosperity” and valleys representing “hard times.“ The > typical cycle, or one undulation of the snake, is shown in the accompanying > diagram, which is the work of one of Colonel Rorty’s associates.

For example, art work can exploit both the richness and the limits of the audience's experience; a novelist, in disguising a roman à clef, counts on the typical reader's lack of personal experience with the actual individual people portrayed. Then the reader refers the signs and interpretants in a general way to an object or objects of the kind that is represented (intentionally or otherwise) by the novel. In all cases, the object (be it a quality or fact or law or even fictional) determines the sign to an interpretant through one's collateral experience with the object, collateral experience in which the object is newly found or from which it is recalled, even if it is experience with an object of imagination as called into being by the sign, as can happen not only in fiction but in theories and mathematics, all of which can involve mental experimentation with the object under specifiable rules and constraints.
