The Greeks initially met with disorganized opposition. In March 1921, despite his health problems, Constantine was landed in Anatolia to boost the Army's morale and command personally the Battle of Kütahya- Eskişehir. However, an ill-conceived plan to capture Kemal's new capital of Ankara, located deep in barren Anatolia, where there was no significant Greek population, succeeded only in its initial stages. The overextended and ill- supplied Greek Army was routed and driven from Anatolia back to the coast in August 1922.

Sir John Hawkins (also spelled Hawkyns) (1532 – 12 November 1595) was a pioneering English naval commander and administrator. He was also a privateer and an early promoter of English involvement in the Atlantic slave trade. His elder brother and trading partner was William (b. c.1519). He was considered the first English trader to profit from the Triangle Trade, based on selling supplies to colonies ill-supplied by their home countries, and their demand for African slaves in the Spanish colonies of Santo Domingo and Venezuela in the late 16th century.

The expedition was a disaster for the English, the troops were ill-supplied and lacked the large artillery needed for the siege they laid at Saint-Martin-de-Ré. Many were lost on 27 October, during a final, desperate assault on the fortress of Saint- Martin that failed because the attackers' siege ladders were shorter than the walls of the fortress. Von Steuben sent a plan to Washington, proposing to use land forces and French ships to trap the main British force under Lord Cornwallis. When he received no new orders from Washington, Lafayette began to move his troops north toward Philadelphia, only to be ordered to Virginia to assume military command there. An outraged Lafayette assumed he was being abandoned in a backwater while decisive battles took place elsewhere, and objected to his orders in vain. He also sent letters to the Chevalier de la Luzerne, French ambassador in Philadelphia, describing how ill-supplied his troops were.

The government sent in the Division Spéciale Présidentielle (DSP) and Guard Civile to restore order. Ill- supplied, the security forces were forced to live off the local population: the DSP off the rich Hutu and the Guard Civile off the Bahunde and ordinary Hutu. The DSP appeared to be protecting the rights of the "non-indigenous" (primarily Hutu) against the "indigenous" (primarily Bahunde), sparking outrage and increasing the scope of the conflict. One estimate is that between 10,000 and 20,000 people were killed; another 200,000 people were forced to flee their homes.

Despite continued complaints of ill health, he was slated in 1811 to take command at Fort St. Joseph, a border garrison and frontier fur-trading post located on St. Joseph Island in northern Lake Huron. Captain Roberts promptly reported to his superiors that his new 46-man command was struggling with alcoholism or as he called it, "unconquerable drunkenness." Fort St. Joseph proved to be ill-supplied by the British army and dependent for its sustenance on private and semi-private fur traders who, with licenses from British Canadian authorities, maintained ties with friendly First Nations people and worked with their Native kinfolk to sustain the upper Great Lakes economy. In November 1811 Captain Roberts even had to beg the post's resident fur trader, John Askin Jr., for point blankets in order to sew winter clothing for his garrison.

Some of his observations, especially of minor planets and comets, made with a Fraunhofer equatorial of 6½ inches aperture, had been published, in a provisional state, in the ‘Monthly Notices’ and ‘Astronomische Nachrichten,’ and the whole were definitively embodied in a volume entitled ‘Results of Astronomical Observations made at the Observatory of the University, Durham, from October 1849 to April 1852’ (Durham, 1855).
