Marketing for the team during the playoff referred to the "charge of the white brigade." In later years, marketing referred to the White Out as "White Noise." Fans of the AHL franchise Manitoba Moose also continued this tradition when the team briefly relocated to St. John's, Newfoundland, as the St. John's IceCaps, as did fans of the "IceCap's White Out" and "Coyotes White Out," respectively. When the Thrashers moved to Winnipeg as the second incarnation of the Jets, they brought back the White Out tradition for the 2015 and 2018 playoffs.
Aerial mapping or photogrammetry is now used to cover larger glaciers and icecaps such found in Antarctica and Greenland, however, because of the problems of establishing accurate ground control points in mountainous terrain, and correlating features in snow and where shading is common, elevation errors are typically not less than 10 m (32 ft). Laser altimetry provides a measurement of the elevation of a glacier along a specific path, e.g., the glacier centerline. The difference of two such measurements is the change in thickness, which provides mass balance over the time interval between the measurements.

Research suggests that during the early Pleistocene, the Southern Ocean was cold and rockhopper populations from the Atlantic and Indian Oceans remained undifferentiated and lived in the same watermass. The mid-Pleistocene climatic transition was associated with the southward migration of frontal positions and islands became surrounded by subtropical water masses, resulting in a split between Northern and Southern rockhopper penguins. Many advance and retreat cycles of Patagonian icecaps during the late Pleistocene may have created a barrier to gene flow between Southern Pacific and Southern Atlantic populations, causing a split between Southern and Eastern rockhopper populations.de Dinechin, M., Ottvall, R., Quillfeldt, P., & Jouventin, P. (2009).

Middle latitude glaciers are located either between the Tropic of Cancer and the Arctic Circle, or between the Tropic of Capricorn and the Antarctic Circle. Both areas support glacier ice from mountain glaciers, valley glaciers and even smaller icecaps, which are usually located in higher mountainous regions. All are located in mountain ranges, notably the Himalayas; the Alps; the Pyrenees; Rocky Mountains; the Caucasus and Pacific Coast Ranges of North America; the Patagonian Andes in South America; and mountain ranges in New Zealand. Glaciers in these latitudes are more widespread and tend to be greater in mass the closer they are to the polar regions.

Sandurs are found in glaciated areas, such as Svalbard, Kerguelen Islands, and Iceland. Glaciers and icecaps contain large amounts of silt and sediment, picked up as they erode the underlying rocks when they move slowly downhill, and at the snout of the glacier, meltwater can carry this sediment away from the glacier and deposit it on a broad plain. The material in the outwash plain is often size-sorted by the water runoff of the melting glacier with the finest materials, like silt, being the most distantly re-deposited, whereas larger boulders are the closest to the original terminus of the glacier. An outwash plain might contain surficial braided stream complexes that rework the original deposits.

The hypothesis that there was life on mars originated from seasonal changes observed in surface features, which began to be interpreted as due to seasonal growth of plants (in fact, Martian dust storms are responsible for some of this). During the 1894 opposition, the idea that Schiaparelli's canali were really irrigation canals made by intelligent beings was first hinted at, and then adopted as the only intelligible explanation, by American astronomer Percival Lowell and a few others. The visible seasonal melting of Mars polar icecaps fueled speculation that an advanced alien race indigenous to Mars built canals to transport the water to drier equatorial regions. Newspaper and magazine articles about Martian canals and "Martians" captured the public imagination.

At this location, about above the Arctic Circle, sunlight is limited to perhaps three months of a year, snowfall is light, and water in the bay is icebound from year to year, with just chance openings allowing only difficult navigation. The off-and-on icebound conditions are well-known to exist in the sea during peak summer times as far as south of the Bay entrance. However, the glaciers and icecaps of Ellesmere Island have not been known to inundate Lady Franklin Bay. The main reach of this bay can be approached by ship if ice floe conditions allow, via Baffin Bay, to Smith Sound, to Kane Basin, through Kennedy Channel, and thus through Hall Basin to the entrance of the Bay.

In 2015, billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk popularized an approach in which the cold planet Mars could be terraformed by the detonation of high-fusion-yielding thermonuclear devices over the mostly dry-ice icecaps on the planet.Sorry, Elon Musk: One Does Not Simply Nuke Mars Into Habitability “It is silly to expect Mars to become easily habitable.” Musk's specific plan would not be very feasible within the energy limitations of historically manufactured nuclear devices (ranging in mt), therefore requiring major advancement for it to be considered. In part due to these problems, the physicist Michio Kaku (who initially put forward the concept) instead suggests using nuclear reactors in the typical land-based district heating manner to make isolated tropical biomes on the Martian surface.
Prothero looks at the evidence regarding global warming and the role humans have had on it. In his book Greenhouse of the Dinosaurs, Prothero states "geologists and paleoclimatologists know a lot about past greenhouse worlds, and the icehouse planet that has existed for the past 33 million years. We have a good understanding of how and why the Antarctic ice sheet first appeared at that time, and how the Arctic froze over about 3.5 million years ago, beginning the 24 glacial and interglacial episodes of the 'Ice Ages' that have occurred since then." In his article in eSkeptic, Prothero details carbon dioxide increases, melting polar icecaps, melting glaciers and sea level rise as some of the more important areas that point to anthropogenic global warming.
The Russian scientist Stepan Krasheninnikov was told the story that it was once a mountain in Kamchatka, but the neighbouring mountains became jealous of its beauty and exiled it to the sea, leaving behind Kurile Lake in southern Kamchatka. Geographically, this story is not without evidence, as after the last Ice Age most of the icecaps melted, raising the world's water level, and possibly submerging a landbridge to the volcano. Following the transfer of the Kuril Islands to Japan by the Treaty of St Petersburg, 1875, Oyakoba as it is called by the Japanese, became the northernmost island of the empire and subject of much aesthetic praise, described in haiku, ukiyo-e, etc. Ito Osamu (1926) described it as more exquisitely shaped than Mount Fuji.

At the end of the episode, Satan returns and sorts out whatever new problem Scumspawn has managed to create. The final two episodes of the series feature a new arrival, Roland (Geoffrey Whitehead), a damned soul even more venal and corrupt than Thomas who tries to organise a rebellion of the demons in Hell with Thomas's help, with exactly the same degree of success that Gary and Thomas had in Series 1. In the end, after easily dealing with the insurrection, Satan decides he need not worry, as humans will soon be extinct anyway. In order to hasten mankind's demise, he turns himself into Jeb Bush and plots to convince Jeb's brother George Bush to launch a nuclear strike on the polar icecaps.

Nimbus satellites collected orbital data on the extent of the polar caps in the mid-1960s, recorded in the visible and infrared parts of the spectrum. These first global snapshots of Earth's icecaps provide invaluable reference points for climate change studies. During a narrowing window of opportunity for data archaeology, the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NDISC) and NASA were able to recover data that allowed the reconstruction of high-resolution Nimbus 2 images from 1966 showing the entire Arctic and Antarctic ice caps.Techno-archaeology rescues climate data from early satellites U.S. National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC), January 2010 WebCitation Archive Wayback Machine When the Nimbus 5 spacecraft launched in 1972, scientists planned for its Electrically Scanning Microwave Radiometer to collect global observations of where and how much it rained across the world.

It turned out to be Bets' only NHL experience as he spent the rest of his time in North America with spells with the San Diego Gulls of the IHL, the Worcester IceCats and the Baltimore Bandits of the AHL and the Raleigh IceCaps of the ECHL. Bets returned to Russia in 1996 in the Russian Superleague with one season spells with HC CSKA Moscow, Traktor Chelyabinsk, Mechel Chelyabinsk and Metallurg Magnitogorsk.
Bourque had an impressive 2011 training camp with the Rangers, leading to his inclusion on the Rangers as the team traveled to Europe for its last exhibition games and the start of the regular season. However, Bourque was assigned to Connecticut before the start of the season and began the 2011–12 season with the Whale. He scored his first professional goal for the Whale on November 4, 2011, against the St. John's IceCaps. After the 2012–13 Whale season, he was added to the Rangers' playoff roster. On August 8, 2014, the Rangers announced they had agreed on terms of a contract with Bourque, who was a restricted free agent at the time. The contract is for two years, with an average annual value of $562,500. He was promoted to the Rangers on April 9, 2015, and made his NHL debut that night against the Ottawa Senators. He did not score but registered one shot on goal and one takeaway. He returned to Hartford on April 12 and then was recalled to the Rangers during the 2015 Stanley Cup playoffs on May 2.
Clay Aiken was born and raised in Raleigh, North Carolina. As a young boy, Aiken sang in the Raleigh Boychoir; and, as a teenager, he sang in school choirs, church choir, musicals and local theatre productions. After high school, he sang lead with a local band, Just By Chance, co-hosting and performing with the band at "Just by Chance and Friends" shows in Dunn, North Carolina. He was also MC and performer at the Johnston Community College Country Showcase in Smithfield and at the North Carolina Music Connection and Hometown Music Connection shows in Garner, and Benson. He performed the national anthem numerous times for the Raleigh IceCaps and the Carolina Hurricanes hockey teams, and performed it at the 2011 NHL All-Star Game at the RBC Center in Raleigh. Three demo albums of Aiken's vocals were created before American Idol with the aid of studio time given as a birthday gift by his mother: a cassette called Look What Love Has Done (by Clayton Grissom), a cassette and CD entitled Redefined (by Clayton Aiken), and a CD that combined some songs from each of the previous demos: "Look What Love Has Done, Vol 2" (by Clay Aiken).
He made his professional debut November 26, 2010, against the Idaho Steelheads. The following day, he recorded his first professional point, an assist, against the Steelheads. After seven games with Victoria, Sauvé was recalled to Manitoba on December 16. He recorded an assist in each of his first two AHL games, both against the Chicago Wolves. By February 2011, the Canucks were playing with four of their regular defencemen sidelined. After Andrew Alberts suffered a wrist injury on February 14, Sauvé was called up to the NHL club as a replacement. He made his NHL debut the following day against the Minnesota Wild, registering 12 minutes of ice time in a 4–1 win. In 2014, as a free agent, Sauvé signed with the Orlando Solar Bears. Sauvé currently holds the record for the fastest shot competition for the ECHL All Star Classic, at nearly 100 miles per hour. In the 2014–15 season, he appeared in just 13 regular season games with the Solar Bears, as he was loaned out to the AHL on three separate occasions with the St. John's IceCaps, Springfield Falcons and Providence Bruins.
After two games with the IceCaps, he was then recalled to Winnipeg on November 3, 2013. By season's end, Redmond was recalled four times by the Jets, appearing in only ten games with three points. Having played primarily in the AHL, he was instrumental in helping St. John's reach their first Calder Cup Finals. Falling short of the NHL games-played requirement throughout his entry-level contract, partly due to the serious leg injury he sustained the previous season, Redmond attained free-agent status. On July 1, 2014, he was subsequently signed to a two-year contract with the Colorado Avalanche. Redmond made the Avalanche roster to begin the 2014–15 season and later made his Avalanche debut, recording an assist in a 7–3 victory over the Vancouver Canucks on October 24, 2014. He scored his first Avalanche goal in his fifth game with the team in a 4–3 defeat to the Philadelphia Flyers on November 9, 2014. Redmond further cemented a position on the blueline when he scored a career-high two goals, including the game-winner, in the final minutes against the Carolina Hurricanes on November 22.
He closed out the season with AHL affiliate, the Charlotte Checkers contributing with 8 points in 15 games. Camara remained a free agent over the duration of the summer and into the 2016–17 season, before he belatedly signed an ECHL contract with the Kalamazoo Wings on November 4, 2016. In a leading offensive role for the K-Wings, Camara responded with 17 points in 25 games before returning to the AHL in agreeing to a professional try-out deal with the St. John's IceCaps on January 5, 2017. As an un-signed free agent approaching the 2017–18 season, Camara signed his first contract abroad in agreeing to a one-year deal with Danish club, Odense Bulldogs of the Metal Ligaen on August 1, 2017. Camara scored 37 points in 27 games before moving to the EBEL with Graz 99ers before completing the season with German outfit, Iserlohn Roosters of the Deutsche Eishockey Liga (DEL). Following a successful 2018–19 season with the Roosters, compiling a professional personal high with 23 goals and 43 points in 50 games, Camara gained interest as a free agent from the Swedish Hockey League, agreeing to a one-year contract with HV71 on April 20, 2019.
