"We can infer given the size of the canister and the fact that it was paraded on Saturday that Pyongyang wants the world to know that it is actively working toward at least two types of solid-fuel, canisterized ICBMs," Panda wrote.
The North Korean nuclear threat last year hit milestones at a faster pace in several months — last July Pyongyang tested two suspected intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) and its timeline for fielding a reliable ICBM was pushed up by two years for starters.
"Shutting down of this test site also does not tell us anything about the state of North Korean ballistic missile testing, especially its Hwasong-15 ICBMs," he added, referring to the intercontinental missile North Korea tested for the first time last November.
Analysts say those ICBMs could be capable of striking parts of the U.S. The Trump administration sees North Korea's nuclear program as a top national security threat to the U.S.  McMaster indicated this weekend that military action against the regime is an option.
But US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, previously blamed by Pyongyang for hurting negotiations, has been downplaying the importance of the recent launches, saying North Korea only ever agreed to abstain from testing intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) capable of hitting US territory.
During the two-hour parade, North Korea displayed conventional weaponry, such as tanks, artillery pieces and multiple-rocket launchers, but it neither rolled out its ICBMs nor made direct references to its growing nuclear weapons capabilities, as it often did in past parades.

In the event of a nuclear exchange with the United States, the country's heavy bombers and ICBMs could prove relatively vulnerable to pre-emptive strikes as their locations are known and can be targeted by American bombs and missiles with near-pinpoint accuracy.
The Sanumdong factory produced two Hwasong-15 ICBMs, North Korea's longest-range missiles, but the U.S. official noted that Pyongyang still had not tested a reliable re-entry vehicle capable of surviving a high-velocity trip through the Earth's atmosphere and delivering a nuclear warhead.
The ones that have been building up ever since the Bill Clinton days when he wanted to give Kim Jong-un wads of cash, and as he beat chest parading around ICBMS when Obama was president, we did nothing -- well, nothing that mattered anyway.
The logic is that if an outside power, for example, the United States, whom it regards as Enemy #1, were to launch ICBMs to destroy or damage its land-based weaponry, it could rely on the SLBMs as a second strike against the enemy.

The Hwasong-14 missile, as it's called, undoubtedly represents a significant improvement in the range of the country's missiles, but the claim that it now possesses bona fide ICBMs—long-range missiles with a minimum range of 3,400 miles (43,500 km)—is likely overstated.

The latest report: U.S. intelligence agencies indicate North Korea is building new missiles, with satellite images taken in recent weeks that appear to show that at least one and possibly two liquid-fueled intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) being worked on at a large research facility in Sanumdong.
"The central idea is that around the core of the JCPOA you build a super-structure, a follow-on agreement that would address the problems of the sunset clauses, address the issue of the ICBMs (inter-continental ballistic missiles) and satisfy the president's anxieties," he said.

Now that North Korea is recognized by the intelligence community and policymakers alike as a clear and present danger to the U.S. mainland—armed with ICBMs capable of blasting American cities with atomic warheads, possibly with much more powerful thermonuclear warheads in 6-18 months—what can we do?

" Another analysis of the Planet Labs images, conducted by Joseph Bermudez at the Stimson Centre's 38 North website, also found no signs of ICBMs, but noted that an expanded number of heavy equipment storage shelters indicate September's parade "will likely be considerably larger than the military parade earlier this year.

The U.S. military is expecting North Korea to launch another missile in the "next several days," according to U.S. defense officials who spoke with the AP. North Korea claims it is in the final stages of building its ICBMs, which could reach the U.S. mainland in the next couple of years.
The Air Force plans to fire off new prototype ICBMs in the early 2020s as part of a long-range plan to engineer and deploy next-generation nuclear armed intercontinental ballistic missiles by the late 2020s – by building weapons with improved range, durability, targeting technology and overall lethality, service officials said.
