Old Horace Walpole (afterwards Lord Walpole) called him (18 April 1735) "the honestest, most disinterested, most knowing person about the plantations he had ever talked with". cites Cox, Walpole, iii. 243. He obtained an act of parliament taking off the prohibition upon deal from Germany and the Netherlands. In 1732, he was appointed one of the trustees for Georgia colony, then founded through James Oglethorpe's exertions.

At the 1722 Chapple stood for Dorchester with support of the Duke of Newcastle, and was returned as Whig Member of Parliament on petition on 13 February1723. According to the 1st Earl of Egmont, when Chapple first entered the House, Arthur Onslow introduced him saying that 'one of the honestest men in England was come to sit among us.' In 1724, he became Serjeant-at-law. He was returned unopposed at the 1727 British general election.

He had been British Consul in Baghdad at the time of Rassam's original excavations at Nineveh, and had been placed in charge of the British excavations in 1853. Rawlinson alleged that he should receive the credit for the discovery of Ashurbanipal's palace himself. Rassam, he wrote, was just a "digger" who had overseen the work. In Rassam's defence, Layard wrote that he was, "one of the honestest and most straightforward fellows I ever knew, and one whose services have never been acknowledged".

He was returned unopposed for Stirling Burghs at the 1715 British general election and developed his connection with the Duke of Argyll. He was awarded the post of muster master in Scotland, which he gave up in 1716 to become a commissioner for the forfeited estates. He was described as ‘the honestest fellow among them’. He voted with the Administration in every recorded division, except that on Lord Cadogan in June 1717, when, with most of Argyll’s supporters, he voted with the Whig minority. He built on his father’s electoral interest in Stirling Burghs and also built up one at Inverkeithing.

On 18 March 1650 Hyde wrote from Madrid to Secretary Nicholas praising Gerard somewhat faintly as a "gallant young man" who "always wants a friend by him"; to which Nicholas replied on 4 May that Gerard is "the gallantest, honestest person now about the King, and the most constant to honourable principles". In the following November (1650) Nicholas writes to Gerard that he has the commission appointing him general of Kent, but that the fact must be kept secret "because the King in his late declaration promised the Scots to grant none." In March 1650–1 Gerard left the Hague for Breda in attendance on the Duke of York, who was anxious to avoid certain "things called ambassadors," as Nicholas scornfully terms the Scottish envoys.

The Bristol Corporation of the Poor was the board responsible for poor relief in Bristol, England when the Poor Law system was in operation. It was established in 1696 by the Bristol Poor Act. The main promoter of the act was a merchant, John Cary, who proposed "That a spacious workhouse be erected in some vacant place, within the city, on a general charge, large enough for the Poor, who are to be employed therein; and also with room for such, who, being unable to work, are to be relieved by charity."Johnson, 4 Upon establishment of the corporation the city aldermen chose four of the "honestest and discreetest inhabitants" from each of the twelve city wards to serve as "Guardians of the Poor".Johnson, 9-10 This caused some resentment amongst the city churchwardens who had previously administered poor law funds and who withheld funds raised from the general rates.
