Portland sells the electricity from a 24-megawatt plant at Dam 1 and a 12-megawatt plant at Dam 2 to PGE, which operates and maintains the equipment. In 1952, Morgan and Meroni filed plans with the New York City Department of Buildings for a completely new structure on the site of the existing home offices. A Metropolitan Life press release stated that a new structure was chosen over a renovation because the new structure would have more interior floor space, due to the elimination of the interior courtyard inside the old building, and because new construction was cheaper than renovation. Work started in 1953, and the company demolished auxiliary structures to make way for the new home office building. Because attics fill the space between the ceiling of the top floor of a building and the slanted roof, they are known for being awkwardly shaped spaces with exposed rafters and difficult-to-reach corners. While some attics are converted into bedrooms, home offices, or attic apartments complete with windows and staircases, most remain difficult to access (and are usually entered using a loft hatch and ladder). On January 1, 1980 the company established the Carl G. An executive desk is often the central artifact for a meeting between several persons. A computer monitor or a printer or even a simple keyboard on the surface can be impediments to the exchange. The credenza desk is comparable in form to but differs from the armoire desk in that it is seen for the most part in large office buildings (instead of home offices, like the armoire desk) and most of its storage spaces are wide open. This bill, which provides no exemptions for certain businesses, has been referred to the House Regulatory Reform Committee; due to her efforts and coalition-building, Joan's colleague, Representative Lee Gonzales, was able to successfully introduce a similar bill on February 19, 2009 which was identical except that it allowed exemptions for Detroit casinos, existing cigar bars, tobacco specialty retail stores, work vehicles and home offices. Joan was a co-sponsor for this bill, and after months of complex negotiations, was able to see it passed with a bipartisan 73-31 majority. Free from the harmful effects of secondhand smoke, Michigan is now the 38th smoke-free state in the nation.
