In a show of force and frustration on Thursday afternoon, a group of roughly 17 Congressional Hispanic Caucus members marched from the House side of the Capitol to Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer's office flanked by members of the press corps, to urge him to hold the line on DACA and other Democratic priorities, including funding for children's health insurance, budget caps on domestic spending and support for veterans.

The explanation for this, Wilkinson hypothesizes, is that the small aggregate movement is hiding an extreme divergence underneath: [T]he United States may be dividing into two increasingly polarized cultures: an increasingly secular-rational and self-expression oriented "post-materialist" culture concentrated in big cities and the academic archipelago, and a largely rural and exurban culture that has been tilting in the opposite direction, toward zero-sum survival values, while trying to hold the line on traditional values.

But what we don't know is worrisome: If we can hold the line on sanctions and avoid leaping into a catastrophic war, we should at some point begin seeing signs of economic distress in regime actions (hard currency seizures, measures to halt imports, patriotic campaigns to make people do more with less and actions to shore up the currency.) Perhaps the recent North Korea offer to halt testing while talking to the U.S. is an early indicator.

From minority positions, they: Prevented President Trump from getting any money to begin construction of the border wall he campaigned on; prevented him from being able to cut off federal funding for so-called "sanctuary cities;" halved his supplemental defense spending request, and put conditions on it; refused to terminate federal funding for Planned Parenthood; refused his proposed significant cuts to the Environmental Protection Agency, and blocked his proposed staff cuts there; increased funding for the National Institutes of Health; refused to defund the National Endowment for the Arts or the Legal Services Corporation, among others; and actually increased domestic discretionary spending, rather than cut it or even hold the line.
