Plebeia is a small genus of stingless bees, formerly included in the genus Trigona. Most of the 35 species are placed in the subgenus (Plebeia) (s.s.), but there also are four species in the subgenus (Scaura). They differ in only minor structural details, primarily of the hind leg, from other genera that were formerly treated as constituents of Trigona.
He was trained by Sunny Jim Fitzsimmons, and was regularly ridden by Eddie Arcaro. Bold Ruler was a big, leggy horse, standing with a great shoulder, powerful hindquarter, and a distinctive long, sloping hip going down to a straight hind leg. Mucho Macho Man is a bay horse with white markings that include a star and stripe on his face, a sock on his left hind leg, and a coronet on his front right leg. He stands over high. He was sired by Macho Uno, who won the Breeders' Cup Juvenile and was named American Champion Two-Year-Old Colt in 2000. Macho Uno was a son of Hall of Fame champion Holy Bull.

Laurens is a big bay filly bred in France by Bloodstock Agency Ltd. She has a white star and snip as well as white socks on her left foreleg and right hind leg. In August 2016 at Goffs the yearling filly was offered for sale and bought for £220,000 by Salcey Forest Stud on behalf of John Dance. She was sent into training with Karl Burke at Middleham Moor in North Yorkshire.
The movement can be beneficial to the horse, in that it improves form and encourages stretching and flexion of the inside hind leg. It teaches sideways movement from the rider's leg, introducing basic lateral concepts, from which more complicated lateral movements may be introduced, such as the half-pass. It also provides a good way of releasing stiffness and tension from the muscles. For the rider, this exercise improves both coordination and application of the aids.

A paletilla may be described or marketed as Ibérica when produced from the same livestock as Jamón Ibérico.
It is probable that the natatory lamellae are what makes such implausible leaps possible. The plates also may aid jumping on land, which Tridactylidae certainly can do impressively. The posterior tibiae also bear articulated spines near their tips, plus spurs longer than the hind tarsi, which may be entirely absent or else are at best vestigial, having only a single segment. The insect uses its hind tibial spurs for digging, which is unusual for an insect's hind leg.
Acclamation is a bay horse with a white star and a white sock on his left hind leg. He was bred in California by Bud Johnston's, Old English Rancho. He was sired by Unusual Heat who won the Amethyst Stakes, Glencairn Stakes and the Platinum Stakes in Ireland before becoming a successful breeding stallion in California. His dam Winning In Style was a granddaughter of Solidity, who was bought for $1,250 by Old English Rancho's founder Ellwood Johnson.
Justify came out of the race almost untouched by the mud due to his front-running style. The day after however, he appeared to be somewhat lame in his left hind leg – a condition that Baffert attributed to "scratches or whatever" from the wet track. The sensitivity was later determined to have been caused by a heel bruise. To protect the heel, Justify was shod with a three-quarter horseshoe before he resumed galloping on May 10.
In captivity, the sugar glider can suffer from calcium deficiencies if not fed an adequate diet. A lack of calcium in the diet causes the body to leach calcium from the bones, with the hind legs first to show noticeable dysfunction. Calcium to phosphorus ratios should be 2:1 to prevent hypocalcemia, sometimes known as hind leg paralysis (HLP). Their diet should be 50% insects (gut-loaded) or other sources of protein, 25% fruit and 25% vegetables.
Esoterique is a bay mare with a small white star and a white sock on her left hind leg bred in Ireland by her owner Édouard de Rothschild's Ecurie de Meautry. Édouard de Rothschild sent the filly into training with André Fabre at Chantilly. She was sired by Danehill Dancer, who won the Phoenix Stakes, National Stakes and Greenham Stakes before becoming a very successful breeding stallion. His other progeny have included Choisir, Mastercraftsman and Dancing Rain.
On November 13, 1990, Alydar appeared to have shattered his right hind leg in his stall at Calumet Farm in Lexington, Kentucky. Emergency surgery was performed the next day in an attempt to repair the injury, but the leg broke again. On November 15, Alydar was euthanized. At the time the owner of Calumet Farm was in dire trouble financially, but suspicions of foul play by the management were not raised until federal prosecutors investigated in the late 1990s.
Present on the thorax are three contrasting black and grey longitudinal stripes; these stripes do not continue onto the abdomen. Sarcophaga have 4, rather than the normal 2 or 3, notopleural bristles, and 3 sternopleural bristles. A prominent row of black bristles (setae) can be found on each side of the thorax, just above the base of the hind leg and just under the base of the wing. These two sets of bristles are what differentiate Sarcophagidae from Muscidae.
In 1997, Buddy had his right hind leg amputated due to synovial cell sarcoma, a type of cancer that manifests near the joints, although he was still able to shoot hoops. Six months later Air Buddy died in his sleep due to complications from cancer on February 10, 1998, at his owner's San Diego home. At the time of his death, Buddy was 9 years old. Buddy was a month and 13 days away from celebrating his 10th birthday.
Galileo is a bay horse with a narrow white blaze and a white sock on his near hind leg. He was sired by Sadler's Wells out of the mare Urban Sea. His breeders were David Tsui, the owner of Urban Sea, and "Orpendale", a name used by the Coolmore Stud organisation for some of their breeding interests. He was described as a three-year-old as being "one of the most impeccably bred horses in training".
The horse should remain forward, balanced, and bent, moving with cadence. The inside hind leg remains engaged throughout the half-pass, and the horse should not lose its rhythm. The half-pass is a variation of haunches-in (travers), executed on a diagonal line instead of along the wall. At higher levels it is used to perform a counter-change of hand, combining more than two half-passes with changes of direction in a zig-zag pattern.
Prior to modern identification techniques being introduced, it was suggested that dogs should be tattooed with a unique identification mark. Different organisations used different marks; for instance, the National Dog Registry suggested that the owner's social security number should be used, whereas the American Kennel Club stated that the registry number of the dog should be tattooed inside the hind leg near the body; the United Kennel Club suggesting a similar use of their registry numbers.

Royal Delta was a dark bay mare with a white star and a white sock on her left hind leg. She was bred in Kentucky by Prince Saud bin Khaled's Palides Investments. She was sired by Empire Maker, who had won the 2003 Belmont Stakes winner. Prior to Royal Delta, Empire Maker's most successful offspring was Pioneerof the Nile, who placed second in the Kentucky Derby and became the sire of Triple Crown winner American Pharoah.
Early in January 2007, the laminitic left hoof became the source of further complications. On January 10, another section of the hoof was surgically removed.Barbaro suffers setback January 10, 2007 Updates over the next few days revealed that the cast had been reapplied to Barbaro's right hind leg for support, and that aggressive pain management and the use of the support sling had been resumed. Nevertheless, Barbaro's condition was better than it had been the previous July.

Sultan was inbred to three great sires, Herod (4m x 4f), Eclipse (4m x 4f), to Herod's best son, Highflyer (4 x 4). He had a refined, beautiful head, well-sprung ribs, deep girth, and muscular, powerful hindquarters.

A single white band appears at the center of the proboscis, multiple white bands span the distal ends of the legs following the leg joints, and the last hind leg joints are completely colored white. Ae. taeniorhynchus wings are long and narrow with scaled wing veins. Experimental investigation of evolutionary coloration of Ae. taeniorhynchus yielded negative results.

Voltigeur initially stood as a stallion at Middlethorpe near York at a fee of 15 guineas. Voltigeur’s most notable offspring was the 2000 Guineas winner Vedette, from his first crop of foals, who sired the Derby winner Galopin among other winners. Galopin sired the undefeated champion St. Simon who became the dominant British stallion of his era. At the age of twenty-seven Voltigeur sustained a fractured hind leg when he was kicked by a mare named Time Test.
Patellar luxation, also known as luxating patella, is a hereditary disorder affecting the knees. It is where the kneecap slips off the groove on which it normally sits. The effects can be temporary with the dog running while holding its hind leg in the air before running on it again once the kneecap slipped back into place as if nothing has happened. Dogs can have a problem with both rear knees, and complications can include arthritis or torn knee ligaments.
They have numerous small spines on their body and on their hind legs. Both sexes are wingless and look very similar. Pat Beasley commented "I always felt I would win... The funny thing about Boswell is that he has always been a good horse but has only just proved it. Possibly he is an autumn horse." Boswell returned to Newmarket with heavy bandaging on his left hind leg, having developed what was described as "heel bug". On his final start of the season, Boswell finished second to his stablemate Precipitation in the Jockey Club Stakes over fourteen furlongs at Newmarket on 1 October.
Caucasus was a bay horse with a white star and a white sock on his right hind leg bred in Kentucky by his owner Jane Engelhard's Cragwood Estates. He was sent to race in Europe and entered training with Vincent O'Brien at Ballydoyle. He was from the first crop of foals sired by Nijinsky, a Canadian horse who won the Triple Crown in 1970. During his racing career Nijinsky had been trained by O'Brien and owned by Jane Engelhard's husband Charles (1917-1971).
He led for most of the way but was overtaken in the straight and beaten into third place behind Pether's Moon and the Irish-trained Parish Hall. On the morning of 14 October, Encke was engaged in a routine training gallop when he sustained a serious injury to a hind leg. Complications ensued and the horse was euthanised on the same day. Appleby said that "Encke was a talented racehorse and will be sorely missed as he was one of the yard's favourites".
Picaroon failed to recover from his injury (described as a "heel bug" or an "enlarged hock") and was scratched from the Derby. In his absence, both races were won by Manna. He returned in August for the Duke of York Plate at York Racecourse, for which he started favourite but was beaten by the subsequent Irish St Leger winner Spelthorne. It was noted that he seemed to be unable to extend his right hind leg normally in the pre-race paddock.

It is tan or brown in color. Like other kangaroo rats it has a large head and large eyes, and long, strong hind leg with which helps it hop at high speeds. The giant kangaroo rat has been recently added to the endangered species list due to its habitat being severely reduced.

The tail is vital for rats' balance and for adjusting body temperature. Tailless rats have greater risk of heat exhaustion, poor bowel and bladder control, falling from heights, and can be at risk for life-threatening deformities in the pelvic region, like hind leg paralysis and megacolon. Similarly, hairless rats are less protected from scratches and the cold without their coat. Groups such as the NFRS prohibit the showing of these varieties at their events and forbid advertisement through affiliated services.

Procaimanoidea ("Before Caiman-forms") is an extinct genus of alligatorid from the Eocene of North America. It was named posthumously in 1946 by Charles W. Gilmore; the type species is P. utahensis, from the Uintan (middle Eocene) of Utah. It is based on USNM 15996, a nearly complete skull and partial left hind leg. A second species, P. kayi, was named in 1941 by C.C. Mook as a species of Hassiacosuchus, for remains from the Bridgerian (early Eocene) of Wyoming.
Heart's Cry is a bay horse with a narrow white blaze and a white sock on his left hind leg, bred by the Yoshida family's Shadai Farm. He was sired by Sunday Silence, who won the 1989 Kentucky Derby, before retiring to stud in Japan where he was champion sire on thirteen consecutive occasions. His dam Irish Dance was a successful racemare who won twice at Group Three level. The horse was named after a number from the show Riverdance.
Steady Aim was a bay mare with a narrow white blaze and a white sock on her right hind leg bred in England by her owner, Sir Alfred Butt. She was sent into training with Frank Butters at the Fitzroy House stable in Newmarket, Suffolk. She was from one of the last crops of foals sired by Felstead who won the Epsom Derby in 1928. He was not a great success as a breeding stallion, but did sire the outstanding racemare Rockfel.
Studies of the effects on animals were done on mice, rats, anesthetized cats and preparations of isolated rat auricle. Toxic effects in mice and rats included abdominal writhing, decrease of motor activity and respiration rate, weakness of the hind leg and ataxia. The effects were different for the different ways PR toxin was taken up. When the median lethal dose was ingested orally, the pathology was described as swollen-gas filled stomach and intestines as well as edema and congestion in the lungs.
Like other German Warmbloods, the breeding of Zweibrücken is characterized by stringent inspection criteria. Foals do not receive their papers until they are presented at a local foal show, at which judges may exclude any foal if it is markedly off-type. Along with their papers, the foals receive a brand on the left hind leg, just behind the stifle. Scratch's dam Orlamonde was an unsuccessful racehorse but produced several other winners including Damno, who won the Prix d'Arenberg. Orlamonde's dam Naic was a half sister of the Prix du Jockey Club winner Ramus and also produced the Grand Prix de Deauville winner Jock.
Always B Miki then won his elimination heat for the Breeders Crown 3YO Colt & Gelding Pace but had to be scratched out of the final when he went lame during the warm-up. Further examination showed that he had fractured the long (P1) pastern of his left hind leg when he kicked the wall of his paddock before the race. He subsequently underwent surgery in which four screws were inserted in the bone. He finished the season with 12 wins from 19 starts.
Despite their uncertainty about living wild, the hutch rabbits are willing to come to Watership. Hazel leads a raid on the farm the next day, during which he rescues both does, but only one of the bucks, at the expense of badly injuring Hazel's hind-leg. When the emissary returns soon after, Hazel and his rabbits learn that Efrafa is a police state led by the despotic General Woundwort. Holly and the other rabbits dispatched there have managed to return with little more than their lives intact.

As a yearling in 1928 the filly was put up for auction and bought for 3,100 guineas by Lord Glanely. She was sent into training with Lord Glanely's private trainer Thomas Hogg at Newmarket, Suffolk. She was sired by the French stallion Teddy who stood with great success in both France and the United States.
Live shows often have vendors present selling model horse and equestrian-related goods. Many showers also sell or trade models at shows. Horses are sometimes required to have information about the entry (including name, breed and gender) on either a tag attached to the off-side hind leg of model, or on a regulation-size card. Breed/colour/performance references may be placed on the table beside the horse, depending on the table size and number of horses in the class as stated in the show guidelines.

It appears that a suspensory ligament allows the lanky legs to support the animal's great weight. The foot of the giraffe reaches a diameter of , and the hoof is high in males and in females.
Chelsea Rose is a chestnut mare with a white blaze and a long white sock on her right hind leg bred in Ireland by the County Kildare-based Airlie Stud. As a yearling she was consigned to the Tattersalls sale in October 2003 and was bought for 38,000 guineas by Emerald Bloodstock. The filly entered the ownership of Frances Donnelly and was sent into training with Con Collins at the Curragh. She was ridden in all but two of her races by Pat Shanahan.
Blue Wind was a dark chestnut mare with a white sock on her left hind leg bred in Ireland by Betty Laidlaw. She was sired by Lord Gayle, an American-bred stallion who won the Prix Perth in 1970. Lord Gayle's other winning progeny included Carroll House, Desirable, Gay Lemur (Jockey Club Stakes) and the leading hurdler Pollardstown. Blue Wind's dam was a granddaughter of the broodmare Dunure, whose other descendants included the Irish Derby winner Dark Warrior and the St Leger winner Bollin Eric.
The holotype specimen MACN Pv 197, was found in a layer of the Snow Hill Island Formation (Cape Lambe, previously assigned to the Lopez de Bertodano Formation), dating to the Maastrichtian age. The remains consists in a right hind leg, including the top of the femur, the lower end of the femur, the upper part of the tibia, the underside of the tibia, the upper half of the foot, the bottom of the midfoot and the top of the first joint of the third toe.
For the 2017 Kentucky Derby, Gunnevera was installed at 15-1 odds in a field of 20 horses. With Javier Castellano aboard, he finished seventh after getting caught in traffic at several points in the race. In his next start, the 2017 Preakness Stakes, Gunnevera was ridden by Mike E. Smith after Castellano opted to ride Cloud Computing, who won the race. Gunnevera finished fifth but came out of the race with bleeding in his left hind leg and did not start in the Belmont Stakes.
Mundig was a powerfully-built dark chestnut horse standing 15.3 hands high with a white star and a white sock on his hind leg. He was owned and bred by John Bowes at Streatlam Castle, County Durham. Bowes had inherited a large fortune when very young. In 1835, when Mundig was foaled, Bowes reached the age of twenty-one and gained full control of his property and wealth: "Mündig" is German for "of age", but the Germanic umlaut was not used in spelling the name.
The pivot on the hindquarters (or spin) is commonly seen in reining, and asks the horse to ground the inside hind leg and pivot forelegs around that point. The turn on the center asks the horse to turn around an imaginary pivot point located at the center of his barrel. The horse bends in the direction of the turn, moving his forehand in the direction of the turn and his hind end in the opposite direction. This allows the horse to turn in a very confined area.
"Asiatosuchus" germanicus skull "A." germanicus hind leg and tail Well-preserved remains of a crocodyloid were first described from Germany and France in 1966 and placed in a new species of Asiatosuchus, A. germanicus. The German remains came from the Messel Pit quarry, a fossil site that has preserved many forms of life that inhabited a series of anoxic lakes and surrounding subtropical forests during the Eocene. Of all the species that have been assigned to Asiatosuchus, "A." germanicus is known from the most complete material.
Enable is a bay filly bred in England by her owner Khalid Abdullah's Juddmonte Farms. She has a large white star and a narrow irregular blaze, a white sock on her left hind leg and smaller white markings on her front feet. She was sent into training with John Gosden at Newmarket, Suffolk. Enable is from the first crop of foals sired by Nathaniel who won the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes in 2011 and the Eclipse Stakes in the following year.
The ponies are most commonly bay, chestnut, or grey. Few coat colours are excluded: piebald, skewbald, and blue-eyed cream are not allowed; palomino and very light chestnut are only accepted by the stud book as geldings and mares. Blue eyes are never accepted. White markings on the head and lower legs are allowed, unless they appear behind the head, above the point of the hock in the hind leg, or above the metacarpal bone at the bend in the knee in the foreleg.
Malawisuchus was first discovered in 1989, but not formally described for several years. It had unusual, mammal-like teeth, including teeth with multiple cusps in the rear of the jaw. Its jaw joint suggests it processed food with a forward motion. The neck was strong, and the articulations of the hind leg suggest an upright posture and an ability to run, while the muscle attachments on the upper arm suggest digging; additionally, the taphonomy of articulated specimens suggests that they had been preserved in burrows.

There they slaughtered a rooster and with its blood tarnished the left hind leg of each horse. After that a loaf of bread with the rooster were carried around horses, then the horses would not be smitten with evil spirits and their random incubus.
In July he developed laminitis in his left rear foot. He was rushed to the hospital, where he underwent five further operations, and his prognosis varied during an exceptionally long stay in the Equine Intensive Care Unit at the New Bolton Center. While his right hind leg eventually healed, a final risky procedure on it proved futile because the colt soon developed further laminitis in both front hooves. His veterinarians and owners concluded that he could not be saved, and Barbaro was euthanized on January 29, 2007.
Marcel is a dark bay colt with a white sock on his left hind leg, bred by David Hyland at the Oghill House Stud in County Kildare. He is from the fifth crop of foals sired by Lawman who won the Prix du Jockey Club and the Prix Jean Prat in 2006. His other progeny have included Most Improved and Just The Judge (Irish 1000 Guineas and E. P. Taylor Stakes). His dam Mauresmo was unraced daughter of Absaar, a half-sister to At Talaq.
Gentilhombre was a chestnut horse with a narrow white blaze and a white sock on his left hind leg bred in the United Kingdom by Mrs M Simpson. He was probably the best horse sired by No Mercy, a sprinter whose best win came in the Prix de Meautry. His dam, Kirisana won one minor race over thirteen furlongs from six starts. Kirisana's breeding was somewhat unusual: her dam Tolosana was very difficult to get in foal and was covered without result by Darius in 1965.
The songs start quietly and increase until it reaches the greatest intensity, and then dies out. The males usually follow up their calling songs with a succession of loud syllables and then try to mate with the female. When the male is calling to a female, there is a greater amplitude of movement for the hind leg facing the female. Males call when a female is close by, and these songs last about 45–60 seconds each with breaks of 10–15 s in between.
However, a rider will almost always feel some degree of gentle side-to-side motion in the horse's hips as each hind leg reaches forward. The fastest "walks" with a four-beat footfall pattern are actually the lateral forms of ambling gaits such as the running walk, singlefoot, and similar rapid but smooth intermediate speed gaits. If a horse begins to speed up and lose a regular four-beat cadence to its gait, the horse is no longer walking but is beginning to either trot or pace.
He appeared to be going well in fourth when he was hampered and brought down when Optimism Reigns fell at the twelfth fence. The race was won by the future Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Looks Like Trouble. It was at first believed that Princeful's injuries amounted to nothing more than a "sprain", but an X-ray examination revealed that the gelding had fractured a pedal bone in his left hind leg. Pitman admitted that she was no more than "hopeful" that he would ever race again.
Alice Hawthorn. The winner of 52 races and Thormanby's dam Thormanby was a lean, wiry, rather plain-looking chestnut horse with a white stripe and a white sock on his left hind leg. He was bred by Benjamin Plummer who had difficulty finding a buyer for the young horse as a yearling at the Doncaster sales before selling him privately for £350 to the trainer Mathew Dawson. Dawson bought the colt for his principal patron James Merry, who was initially reluctant to complete the transaction.
Soon after, in September 1861, he was purchased from the government by Meade in Washington, D.C., for $150 and named Baldy because of his white face. Despite Baldy's unusual, uncomfortable pace, Meade became quite devoted to him and rode him in all of his battles through 1862 and the spring of 1863. The horse was wounded in the right hind leg at the Second Battle of Bull Run, and at Antietam, he was wounded through the neck and left for dead on the field. He survived and was treated.
Distant Music is a bay horse with a white sock on his right hind leg, bred in Kentucky by Juddmonte Farms, the breeding organisation of his owner Khalid Abdullah. The colt was sent to race in Europe and was trained throughout his career by Barry Hills at Lambourn in Berkshire and was ridden in the first half of his racing career by Hills' son Michael. He was from the first crop of foals sired by Abdulah's stallion Distant View who won the Sussex Stakes in 1994. Distant View's other foals have included Observatory and Sightseek.
Blue Point is a bay horse with a white star and a white sock on his left hind leg bred in Ireland by Oak Lodge Bloodstock. As a foal in November 2014 he was put up for auction at Tattersalls where he was sold for 110,000 guineas to Ebor Bloodstock. In October 2015 the yearling returned to the Tattersalls sales ring and was bought for 200,000 guineas by John Ferguson Bloodstock, acting on behalf of Godolphin. The colt was sent into training with Charlie Appleby at Godolphin's British base in Newmarket, Suffolk.
Zabeel Prince is a chestnut horse with a white sock on his right hind leg bred in Ireland by the County Limerick based Roundhill Stud. In December 2014 he was put up for auction at Tattersalls and was bought by the bloodstock agent Charlie Gordon-Watson for 325,000 guineas. He entered the ownership of Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum and was sent into training with Luca Cumani in Newmarket, Suffolk. In September 2015 however, all of Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum's horses were removed from Cumani's stable and transferred to the stable of Roger Varian.
His jockey shifted him away from the rail until they finally found running room, at which point Bricks and Mortar accelerated rapidly to win by three-quarters of a length. "With this horse," said Brown, "if you set him down in the clear and give him a target, he gets there... He's done everything we've asked." Bricks and Mortar was narrowly defeated in both of his next two starts, the Saranac and Hill Prince Stakes. After the latter race, he was diagnosed with stringhalt, a neuro- muscular condition that affected his right hind leg.
Shangamuzo, was a big, powerful, dark chestnut horse with a small white star and a white sock on his right hind leg bred in England by Henry Rogers Broughton, 2nd Baron Fairhaven. His sire Klairon was a top-class racehorse whose wins included the Poule d'Essai des Poulains in 1955. Apart from Shangamuzo, he sired the Champion Stakes winner Lorenzaccio and Prix Jacques Le Marois winner Luthier. Klairon was a representative of the Byerley Turk sire line, unlike more than 95% of modern thoroughbreds, who descend directly from the Darley Arabian.
Quiet Reflection is a bay mare with a white blaze and a white sock on her right hind leg. She was bred by the Springcombe Park Stud, a stud farm on the borders of Somerset and Wiltshire which was founded by Paul Gardner in 2007 on the site of an old dairy farm. Gardner later admitted that his decision to sell Quiet Reflection was "probably a big mistake". As a yearling the filly was auctioned at the Goffs Doncaster Silver Sale on 28 August 2014 and was bought for £32,000 by Geoffrey Howson Bloodstock.
Sweet Solera was a "big, handsome" chestnut filly with a broad white blaze and a long white sock on her left hind leg, bred in Ireland by Mrs D. M Walker. Her sire, Solonaway won the Irish 2,000 Guineas over a mile, but was better known as a sprinter. In the year of Sweet Solera's birth he was exported to Japan, where he became Champion sire in 1966. Her dam, Miss Gammon, won three minor races and was a half-sister of Royal Rasher, who won the Del Mar Oaks in 1957.
Of 395 sheep killed in a sheep farming area in KwaZulu-Natal, 13% were killed by jackals. Jackals usually kill sheep with a throat bite, and begin feeding by opening the flank and consuming the flesh and skin of the flank, heart, liver, some ribs, haunch of hind leg, and sometimes the stomach and its contents. In older lambs, the main portions eaten are usually heart and liver. Usually, only one lamb per night is killed in any one place, but sometimes two and occasionally three may be killed.

The Duke was a senior member of the Jockey Club and the Queen's representative at Ascot Racecourse. He was sired by Ragusa, the winner of Irish Derby, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes and St. Leger Stakes in 1963 and the Eclipse Stakes in the following year. His other notable progeny included The Derby winner Morston, foaled in the same year as Ragstone.
Giacometti was rangy, good-looking chestnut horse with a short white sock on his left hind leg bred in Ireland by C A Ryan. He was sired by Faberge, a French-bred horse who finished second to Baldric in the 2000 Guineas. At stud, Faberge sired the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe winner Rheingold before being exported to Japan. Giacometti's dam Naujwan was unbeaten in two races but came from a relatively undistinguished family, although her great- grand-dam Salecraft was a half-sister of the Derby winner Straight Deal.
T M Opera O finished second in his only start at age two, after which he injured his left hind leg and was unable to race again for several months. At age three, he made ten starts, amassing a record of four wins, two seconds and three thirds. Early in the year he broke his maiden, then won the Yukiyanagi Sho at Hanshin over a distance of 2000m for his first stakes win. He followed this up by winning the Grade III Mainichi Hai on March 28, 1999.
West Wind is a chestnut mare with a white star and a white sock on her left hind leg bred in England, by her owner Sheikh Mohammed's Darley Stud. She was sent into training with Henri-Alex Pantall at Beaupreau in France. She was sired by Machiavellian who was the leading French two-year-old of 1989 when he was unbeaten in three races including the Group One Prix Morny and Prix de la Salamandre. As a breeding stallion his best winners included Street Cry, Almutawakel, Medicean and Storming Home and Chic.
Nearula was a "compact, medium-sized" bay horse with a narrow white blaze and a white sock on his right hind leg, bred by Roderick More O'Ferrall and C. Sweeney at the Kildangan Stud, County Kildare, Ireland. As a yearling he was offered for sale and bought for 3,000 guineas by William Humble. The colt was sent into training with Captain Charles Elsey at his Highfield stable near Malton, North Yorkshire. Elsey had been training racehorses since 1911 and had recorded his first classic winner with Musidora in 1949.
At the sixth annual show of the Shepherd Dog Club of America, October 15–16, 1920, Etzel placed third in his class. He was described as "immense in body and hind leg formation, in body and legs a trifle better than either of the dogs above him". Etzel was seen by film director Laurence Trimble, who had owned and guided Jean, the Vitagraph Dog, the first canine movie star in the United States. Trimble recognized Etzel's potential and persuaded Jane Murfin, a screenwriter for his films, to buy the dog.
What is referred to as the horse stance in south Indian martial arts is very different from the posture of the same name in other Asian fighting styles. Known in Malayalam as aswa vadivu or ashwa vadivu, it imitates the horse itself rather than the rider. In kalaripayat, the horse stance has the hind leg stretched completely backward while the knee of the front leg is bent ninety degrees. The horse stance is the main posture of the Shiva form and is related to the virabhadrasana (warrior pose) in yoga.
Two intelligent races are native to Io: the loonies, a humanoid race of only moderate intelligence with large balloonlike heads upon long, slim necks, and the rodentine, warlike slinkers. Through her dam Trick Chick, Northern Trick was a granddaughter of the notable broodmare Fast Line.
Asia Express is a chestnut horse standing 1.66 metres high with white socks on his hind leg bred in Florida by Ocala Farm. In March 2013 the colt was consigned to the Ocala Breeders' Sales Company Selected Sale of Two- Year-Olds in Training and was bought for $230,000 by Narvick International. He was exported to Japan where he entered the ownership of Yukio Baba and was sent into training with Takahisa Tezuka. He was sired by Henny Hughes, a sprinter whose biggest wins came in the King's Bishop Stakes and Vosburgh Stakes in 2006.
Mrs Penny was a "lengthy" chestnut mare with a broad white blaze and a long white sock on her right hind leg bred by Marshall Jenney at the Derry Meeting Farm near Cochranville, Pennsylvania . She was sired by Great Nephew, a British stallion whose other progeny included Grundy and Shergar. Her dam Tananarive won in France when owned by her breeder Daniel Wildenstein and was exported to the United States when pregnant with the filly who would become Mrs Penny. Tananarive later produced Cadeaux d'Amie, the dam of the 1000 Guineas winner Hatoof.
Tolmi was a "strong, compact" dark-coated bay filly with a very small white star and a white sock on her left hind leg, bred in England by her owner George Cambanis. Her dam Stilvi was bought by Cambanis as a yearling and became a top-class racehorse, winning the King George Stakes and Duke of York Stakes and an outstanding broodmare. Before Tolmi, she had produced Tachypous (Middle Park Stakes), Tromos (Dewhurst Stakes) and Tyrnavos (Irish Derby). She was sired by Great Nephew, a British stallion whose other progeny included Grundy and Shergar.
Persian Heights was a "rangy" chestnut horse with a white sock on his left hind leg bred by the Newmarket-based Banstead Manor Stud. His sire, Persian Bold was a successful racehorse who won the Richmond Stakes in 1977. He went on to be a "good" stallion, getting important winners such as Kooyonga, Bold Pilot, Falcon Flight (Prix Hocquart) and Bold Russian (Celebration Mile). Persian Heights' dam Ready and Willing won over one and a half miles as a three-year-old and was a daughter of the Yorkshire Oaks runner-up No Saint.
Spaniel was described as a "light, bright, airy little" bay horse with a white stripe and a white sock on his hind leg bred by George Wyndham, 3rd Earl of Egremont. He was the full brother of the 1826 Derby winner Lap-dog, being sired by Whalebone out of Egremont's unnamed Canopus mare. In addition to the two Derby winners, the Canopus mare also produced Fanchon, the dam of the 1000 Guineas winner Cara. Spaniel's sire, Whalebone won the 1810 Derby and thirteen other races before becoming a successful and important stallion.
Chriselliam was a bay filly with a white star and a white sock on her left hind leg bred by the Ballylinch Stud of County Kilkenny. She was one of the best horses sired by Iffraaj, a high-class sprinter whose wins included the Wokingham Stakes, Lennox Stakes and Park Stakes (twice). Chriselliam's dam Danielli failed to win a race but was a half-sister of the Moyglare Stud Stakes winner Priory Belle. In 2012, Chriselliam was sent to the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale and was bought for 40,000 guineas by the bloodstock agent SackvilleDonald.
The Jin Chan is usually depicted as a bullfrog with red eyes, flared nostrils and only one hind leg (for a total of three legs), sitting on a pile of traditional Chinese cash, with a coin in its mouth. On its back, it often displays seven diamond spots. According to Feng Shui beliefs, Jin Chan helps attract and protect wealth, and guards against bad luck. Because it symbolizes the flow of money, Feng Shui lore insists that a Jin Chan statue should not be positioned facing the main door ("outward").

The shoulder-in is a lateral movement in dressage used to supple and balance the horse and encourage use of its hindquarters. He stood 15.3 hands high and was described as being "very strong behind the saddle, but with less than perfect forelegs". Distant View's dam Seven Springs was a very fast and precocious racemare who won the Prix Robert Papin and the Prix Morny in 1984.
The bug waits for the ant to grab its hind leg and then turns round and plunges the stylets in the proboscis into a weak spot in the ant's cuticle, the joint at the back of the head. It then jerks and shakes the ant around, perhaps to prevent it from biting, and injects saliva into the wound. The ant soon dies and the bug may carry it to a crevice or other concealed spot. When the body contents of the ant have liquefied, the bug sucks out the body fluids.
The circle naturally places the horse's body in the correct bend, and helps to encourage the engagement needed for the movement. The outside hind leg must step well under the horse's body to push the animal forward and sideways. A rider uses an active outside leg slightly behind the neutral position to ask the horse to step forward and under. The outside rein maintains the correct bend and contains the energy of the horse, the inside leg keeps the horse moving forward, and the inside rein guides the forehand in the direction of movement.
Chorist was a chestnut mare with a narrow white blaze and a white sock on her left hind leg bred and owned by the Newmarket based Cheveley Park Stud. She was sent into training with William Haggas at Somerville Lodge stable in Newmarket. Her sire Pivotal was a top class sprinter who won the King's Stand Stakes and the Nunthorpe Stakes in 1996. He went on to become an "excellent" sire, getting the winners of more than a thousand races across a range of distances including Sariska, Somnus, Farhh, Kyllachy and Immortal Verse.
Despite the adverse track conditions and never being urged by Cruguet, his time was a "brisk" 1:22. Seattle Slew was being pointed to the Metropolitan Handicap at the end of May but suffered another setback when a filling in his left hind leg was discovered. The problem was thought to be minor, but it was not until August that he made his next start. This was in a seven-furlong allowance race at Saratoga Race Course, which he won by six lengths in 1:21 over a sloppy track.

The pine woods tree frog is a very small species, growing to a length of . The color varies, sometimes being mottled brownish- gray, deep reddish-brown, gray, or grayish-green, usually with dark markings on its back. It is very similar in appearance to the squirrel tree frog but it can be distinguished from that species by the series of yellow, orange, or white dots that can be seen on the back of the thigh when the hind leg is extended. The toes have large toe pads but little webbing.
In 1862, Carl Stål distinguished two types in the then existing genus Pachylis, those where the muscle widening (dilation) of the hind-leg tibia occurs only ventrally (downward), and those where it occurs on both sides (ventrally and dorsally). Saint Estephe's dam Une Tornade was a Listed race winner in France and was descended from Pontoon, a half-sister of The Derby winner Pont l'Eveque.

A two-time Grade I winner as a juvenile, Grand Slam scored all four of his career victories over the dirt at Belmont Park.Grand Slam Horse Pedigree At age two, he won the Belmont Futurity Stakes in September and Champagne Stakes in October, both Grade I races. Then in the 1997 Breeders' Cup Juvenile in November at Hollywood Park, he suffered a cut in his left hind leg going into the first turn and did not finish the race. He missed four months of racing while recovering from his injury.
Pastern and hoof angles of the hindlegs are more vertical than the forelegs, usually over 50 degrees. Hooves have strong walls and a well shaped frog, round and with wide heels. The hind legs of the Gypsy Horse should display proper angulation for a pulling horse, although not to the degree found in larger feathered draught breeds such as the modern Shire and Clydesdale. He went on to produce numerous other top-class winners including Celtic Ash, Diatome and Roi Dagobert.
Admire Vega was a bay horse with a white blaze and a white sock on his left hind leg bred in Japan by the Yoshida family's Northern Farm. He was smaller than average for a male Thoroughbred, with a maximum racing weight of 464 kg. He was sired by Sunday Silence, who won the 1989 Kentucky Derby, before retiring to stud in Japan where he was champion sire on thirteen consecutive occasions. His other major winners included Deep Impact, Stay Gold, Heart's Cry, Manhattan Cafe, Zenno Rob Roy and Neo Universe.
Lovely Rosa was a bay mare with a white sock on her right hind leg, bred in Ireland by E. J. Hope who had bought her dam Napoule at Dublin for 80 guineas with Lovely Rosa in utero. In 1934 the yearling filly was put up for auction at Dublin and sold for 370 guineas to the trainer Harry Cottrill. Shortly afterwards she was offered for sale at Newmarket bought for 670 guineas by F R MacDonald. In early 1935 she changed hands again when she was bought privately by Abe Bailey.

Royal Gait's dam, High Gait, was a granddaughter of the Irish Oaks winner Merry Mate, who was, in turn, a daughter of the Ascot Gold Cup winner Gladness.
Lys Gracieux is a dark bay or brown mare with a white blaze and a white sock on her left hind leg bred in Japan by Northern Farm. During her racing career she was trained by Yoshito Yahagi and raced in the green, white and red colours of the Northern Farm affiliate U Carrot Farm. She was from the seventh crop of foals sired by Heart's Cry a horse whose wins included the Arima Kinen and the Dubai Sheema Classic. His other foals have included Admire Rakti, Just A Way and Suave Richard.
A grasshopper beam engine, 1847 The name "Grasshopper" was given to the Aeronca L-3 and Piper L-4 light aircraft, both used for reconnaissance and other support duties in World War II. The name is said to have originated when Major General Innis P. Swift saw a Piper making a rough landing and remarked that it looked like a grasshopper for its bouncing progress. Grasshopper beam engines were beam engines pivoted at one end, the long horizontal arm resembling the hind leg of a grasshopper. The type was patented by William Freemantle in 1803.
Black-capped squirrel monkeys are mostly found in trees and will often leap 1–2 metres between branches. "This time, she had to belly down and fight." Personal Ensign was being pointed towards the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies, a race in which she would have been the favorite, but became lame after an apparently routine workout on October 26. Tests revealed that she had broken the pastern bone on her right hind leg, an injury that would have been career-ending and perhaps life threatening just a few years earlier. However, thanks to advances in veterinary surgical techniques, she was operated on by Dr. Larry Bramlage, who inserted five screws into the bone.
In July 2014, Bal a Bali was sold for $1.5 million to Fox Hill Farm, owned by Rick Porter, and Siena Farm. He was shipped to a quarantine facility in Miami and arrived with a scrape on his hind leg. A veterinarian was called in and detected signs of impending laminitis, a hoof condition that causes serious pain and is a leading cause of death in horses. The horse was quickly moved to Palm Beach Equine Clinic, where early and aggressive action proved to be the key to the horse's survival.
Poached eggs with tasso, griddled tomato and south Louisiana hollandaise Tasso ham is a smoked, spiced, and cured meat, a specialty of south Louisiana cuisine. In this case "ham" is a misnomer since tasso is not made from the hind leg of a hog, but rather the hog's shoulder. This cut is typically fatty, and because the muscle is constantly used by the animal, has a great deal of flavor. He was from the first crop of foals sired by Dubai Destination whose biggest win came in the 2003 Queen Anne Stakes. His other offspring have included Top Trip (Prix Hocquart), Family One (Prix Robert Papin) and Fleche d'Or the dam Golden Horn. Ibn Khaldun's dam Gossamer was a top-class racemare whose wins included the Fillies' Mile and the Irish 1,000 Guineas.
Meisho Mambo is a bay mare with a white sock on her right hind leg bred in Japan by Kosho Bokujo, the breeding farm of her owner Yoshio Matsumoto. She was sent into training with Akihiro Iida and was ridden in most of her races by Koshiro Take. In her races Meisho Mambo usually wore a hood in the blue and pink colours of her owner. She was sired by Suzuka Mambo (a son of Sunday Silence) who recorded his biggest win in the spring edition of the 2005 Tenno Sho.
In his fifth appearance in the Breeders' Cup Turf, he finished eighth. Better Talk Now began his 10-year-old season with a sixth-place finish in the Elkhorn Stakes on April 24, 2009 before finishing third in the Manhattan Handicap on June 6. He then finished second in the Sword Dancer Invitational Handicap at Saratoga in August. He was scheduled to start in the Joe Hirsch Turf Classic on October 3, but was retired on September 29 after injuring the suspensory ligament in his left hind leg.
In contrast to Epsom, the ground in Ireland was unusually firm and Teenoso appeared to be unsuited to the conditions as he finished third, beaten by Shareef Dancer, who won impressively, and Caerleon. Teenoso was then trained for the St. Leger Stakes at Doncaster Racecourse in September. In his trial race, the Great Voltigeur Stakes at York in August, he ran disappointingly, finishing third to Seymour Hicks and Dazari. He returned from the race with an injury originally believed to be a stress fracture of the left hind leg.
Lycius was a chestnut horse with a large, irregular white star and a long white sock on his right hind leg bred in Kentucky by John C Mabee. He was sired by the hugely influential American stallion Mr. Prospector. Although he was best known for his success in the United States, Mr. Prospector was also the sire of numerous major winners in Europe including Kingmambo, Machiavellian, Distant View and Ravinella. Lycius's dam Lypatia showed moderate ability as a racehorse but produced several other winners including the Dixie Handicap winner Akabir.
Gang Forward, described as "a remarkably handsome, powerful colt" was bred by his owner William Stuart Stirling-Crawfurd (1819–1883), an "old school" sportsman who had married the widow of the 4th Duke of Montrose. Stirling-Crawfurd named the colt after the motto of Clan Stirling. Gang Forward was a chestnut horse standing 15.3 hands high with a white blaze and a white sock on his right hind leg. He was sired by Stockwell, winner of the 1852 St. Leger and 2,000 Guineas Stakes and a seven time leading sire.
A dark chestnut colt with a star, snip, and white sock on his near (left) hind leg, The Baron won three of his four starts at the Curragh in Ireland as a three-year-old before being shipped to England in 1845 by his breeder, veterinary surgeon George Watts. He was then sold to John Scott with whom he won the 1¾-mile St. Leger Stakes and the 2¼-mile Cesarewitch Handicap, the latter under () for 3,200 guineas. This was the largest purse ever awarded a three-year-old up to that time. The Baron was then purchased by Edward Rawson Clark.
Stereo photos and diagrams of PM120/107's arm bones The limb posture of multituberculates has been debated. According to some researchers, they employed a parasagittal stance with the erect limbs under the body; others consider a sprawling stance more likely. Kielan-Jaworowska and Hurum supported the latter theory in 2006 based on the presence of hind-leg spurs, a feature they considered present only in sprawling mammals. They pointed out that all early mammals preserved in lacustrine (lake) deposits were compressed from top to bottom, suggesting a sprawling stance, whereas later mammals were preserved on their flanks.
The holotype specimen, JZMP04117, was discovered in the Daohugou Beds of the Tiaojishan Formation in the Inner Mongolia region of China, which dates to about 159–164 million years ago (mya) in the Middle to Late Jurassic. It comprises a partial skeleton including an incomplete skull but well-preserved lower jaws, most of the ribs, the limbs (save for the right hind leg), the pelvis and the tail. The remains are so well preserved that there are elements of its soft anatomy and hair. Castorocauda is a member of the order Docodonta, an extinct group of mammaliaforms.
These stars mark the paws of the Lesser Dog's left hind leg, while magnitude 5.13 Zeta marks the right. A blue-white bright giant of spectral type B8II, Zeta lies around away from the Solar System. Lying 222 ± 7 light-years away with an apparent magnitude of 4.39, HD 66141 is 6.8 billion years old and has evolved into an orange giant of spectral type K2III with a diameter around 22 times that of the Sun, and weighing 1.1 solar masses. It is 174 times as luminous as the Sun, with an absolute magnitude of −0.15.
Diamond Shoal was a bay horse with a white sock on his left hind leg bred by his owner Paul Mellon. He was sired by Mellon's stallion Mill Reef and American-bred horse who won the Epsom Derby, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes and Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe in 1971. Mill Reef's other offspring included Reference Point, Milligram, Shirley Heights, Lashkari and Doyoun. Diamond Shoal was the second foal of his dam Crown Treasure, a daughter of Graustark who was sent to Europe in to be covered by Mill Reef and remained there for several years owing to import restrictions.
Olympic Glory is a bay colt with a narrow white blaze and a white sock on his left hind leg bred by Denis McDonnell at his Parkway Stud in County Cork. He was sired by Choisir, an Australian sprinter who won the Golden Jubilee Stakes and King's Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot in 2003. Choisir operates as a shuttle stallion, moving between the Coolmore Stud's Irish and Australian bases and has also sired many successful racehorses including Starspangledbanner and Sacred Choice. Olympic Glory's dam Acidanthera won one minor race, but came from a good family being a descendant of the broodmare Violetta.
Blenheim was a brown horse standing 15.3 hands high with a white star and a white sock on his left hind leg, bred by Henry Herbert, 6th Earl of Carnarvon at his Highclere stud. He was sired by the good sire Blandford, a three-time British champion sire, whose other progeny included Bahram, Brantome, Trigo, Pasch and Windsor Lad. Blenheim's dam, Malva (1919–1941) who stood barely 15 hands, won three minor races for Lord Carnarvon before becoming a highly successful broodmare. She was the dam of seven winners, including the Coronation Cup winners King Salmon (sire of Herringbone) and His Grace.
Byword is a chestnut horse with a broad white blaze and a long white sock on his left hind leg, bred in the United Kingdom by his owner, Khalid Abdullah's, Juddmonte Farms. He was sired by the American-bred Peintre Celebre who won the Prix du Jockey Club, Grand Prix de Paris and Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe in 1997. Peintre Celebre's other progeny included Pride and the Hong Kong Derby winner Collection. Byword'd dam Binche made no impact as a racecourse, but has been a very successful broodmare, also producing the multiple Grade I winner Proviso.
Nureyev was sent to stand at stud at his owner's Haras de Fresnay-le-Buffard in Neuvy-au-Houlme in Lower Normandy. Renowned French horseman Alec Head recommended Nureyev to Lexington, Kentucky breeder John T. L. Jones Jr. and in mid-1981 put together a syndicate that purchased Nureyev for US$14 million. Nureyev was brought to Jones' Walmac-Warnerton Farm partnership near Lexington and then under Jones' wholly owned Walmac International. On May 5, 1987, Nureyev suffered a life-threatening fracture to his right hind leg in a paddock accident during breeding season, but veterinary surgeons were able to save his life.
Madam Gay was a dark-coated bay mare with a small white star and a white sock on her left hind leg, bred by the Worksop Manor Stud in Nottinghamshire. She was one of the best horses sired by Star Appeal, an Irish-bred, German-trained horse who won the Eclipse Stakes and Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe in 1975. Madam Gay's dam Saucy Flirt was a sprinter who won handicap races at York and Leicester. As a yearling, the filly was sent to the Tattersalls sales at Newmarket in October and was bought for 8,000 guineas by Geoffrey Kaye.
Fuji Kiseki was a brown or black horse standing 1.63 metres high with a white star and a white sock on his right hind leg bred by the Shadai Farm. During his racing career he was owned by Yomoji Saito and trained by Sakae Watanabe. He was from the first crop of foals sired by Sunday Silence, who won the 1989 Kentucky Derby, before retiring to stud in Japan where he was champion sire on thirteen consecutive occasions. His other major winners included Deep Impact, Stay Gold, Heart's Cry, Manhattan Cafe, Zenno Rob Roy and Neo Universe.
Spike on the male femur The thorny devil color ranges from light brown to black and resembles bark or rotten wood. Both sexes are wingless and armored with spines on body and legs. Exhibiting the sexual dimorphism of many similar insects (particularly other phasmids as well as mantises), males are small and thinner, less than 9-10 cm long while females are typically 14 cm in length. The male has enlarged hind leg femurs with a curved spine or thorn on the underneath side, large enough to be used as a fish hook in New Guinea.
The port continued in use, and the young naturalist Charles Darwin arrived with the Beagle survey expedition under captain Robert FitzRoy in January 1834. While HMS Beagle carried out its hydrographic survey, Darwin explored the local geology in cliffs near the harbour and found fossils of pieces of spine and a hind leg of "some large animal, I fancy a Mastodon". On their return to England, the anatomist Richard Owen revealed that the bones were actually from a gigantic creature resembling the Llama and the camel, which Owen named Macrauchenia. This was one of the discoveries leading to the inception of Darwin's theory.
Sistercharlie is a bay mare with a white blaze and a long white sock on her left hind leg bred in Ireland by the French-based Ecurie des Monceaux. In October the yearling filly was put up for auction in the Aqrana sale at Deauville and was bought for €12,000 by the bloodstock agency NATAF Paul. She subsequently entered the ownership of White Birch Farm & Mme J Cygler and was sent into training in France with Henri-Alex Pantall. She was sired by Myboycharlie who won the Anglesey Stakes and the Prix Morny as a two-year-old in 2007.
Sanedtki was a bay mare with a narrow white stripe and a white sock on her right hind leg bred in Ireland by Jim Powell (1912-2012). She was from the first crop of foals sired by Sallust an outstanding miler who won the Sussex Stakes and the Prix du Moulin in 1972. Sallust went on to sire the colt Tap On Wood, whose wins included the winner of the 1979 2000 Guineas. Sanedtki's dam, Fortlin, and grand-dam Creepy Crawley were moderate racehorses, but the latter was a half-sister of the July Cup winner Vilmoray.
Merle and Reitch have this to say about jugged hare, for example: :The best part of the hare, when roasted, is the loin and the thick part of the hind leg; the other parts are only fit for stewing, hashing, or jugging. It is usual to roast a hare first, and to stew or jug the portion which is not eaten the first day. ... :To Jug A Hare. This mode of cooking a hare is very desirable when there is any doubt as to its age, as an old hare, which would be otherwise uneatable, may be made into an agreeable dish.
A Pyecombe hook is a distinctive shepherd's crook crafted in the old forge at the village of Pyecombe in Sussex, England since the 19th century. The Pyecombe hook was perfectly balanced with a twist that allowed shepherds to easily catch the hind leg of a sheep without injuring the sheep. Its use is described by Charles Mitchell: “the curve is made so that the shepherd can hook it around the sheep’s leg, slide it up, give it a slight twist, and the sheep is caught fast without being in the least hurt.” It was often made out of old gun barrels.
Understanding the motion of the canter is important if a person wants to ride the horse with a balanced, secure, yet flexible seat. To the rider, the horse's back feels as if it is moving both up and down as well as somewhat back and forth, not unlike the motion of a swing. When the hind legs engage (which occurs just before beat one), the horse raises its head and neck as its hind leg steps under. As the legs push off the ground (beats 1 and 2) the head and neck of the horse drops.
Besides swelling in the long plantar ligament, injury to the deep digital flexor tendon, superficial digital flexor tendon, tarsocrural lateral collateral ligament or peritendonous/periligamentous tissues in this region can contribute to the appearance of curb. Sickle-hocked conformation is a predisposing risk factor for the development of curb. (See hind leg conformation) Fluid accumulation and/or swelling are almost always found in the peritendonous/periligamentous tissues in curb, often with no additional underlying injuries. Injury to the superficial digital flexor tendon as a cause of curb is as common as injury to the long plantar ligament.
Like all cuckoo bumble bees, the outer tibial surface of the hind leg is convex and densely hairy, rather than adapted for pollen transport. Their heads are more teardrop shaped and the thorax is predominantly yellow including the lower sides and sometimes down to segment T4 or 5. Hair on the face is usually black with some yellow hairs, there are usually no black hairs on the thorax and would not form a band between the wing bases. Metastomal hairs are short and even and longer on T5 than the other joints and matte with dense punctures on T6.
The Brazil-nut poison frog is a very small frog with a snout-to-vent length of ; females are usually larger than males. The dorsal surface is of a shiny black colour with spots and markings of white or various shades of yellow. There is a bright yellow or orange spot where the foreleg joins the body and two more similarly coloured spots on either side of the knee joint on the hind leg, which combine to make a single large spot when the animal is stationary. A further spot on the underside of the calf is only visible from below.
Barbaro broke his right hind leg in more than 20 places:Bob Costas on the television special Barbaro: A Nation's Horse states that there were more than 20 breaks a broken cannon bone above the pastern, a broken sesamoid bone behind the fetlock and a broken long pastern bone below the fetlock. The fetlock joint was dislocated, and his foot was left dangling loosely. Veteran jockey Edgar Prado immediately pulled Barbaro up, and brought him to a gentle stop. He dismounted and leaned his shoulder into the horse's shoulder to support Barbaro until track attendants could arrive.
The ratio is actually larger in smaller individuals than in larger ones. Ostrom suggested that the short metatarsus may be related to the function of the sickle claw, and used the fact that it appears to get shorter as individuals aged as support for this. He interpreted all these features—the short second toe with enlarged claw, short metatarsus, etc.—as support for the use of the hind leg as an offensive weapon, where the sickle claw would strike downwards and backwards, and the leg pulled back and down at the same time, slashing and tearing at the prey.
The male and female red- fronted gazelles are similar in size, and both have s-curved horns. It has a light red-brown color around its whole body, except for its white underside and rump. It has a distinct, thin (-high) black band that runs from the elbow to the stifle (hind leg). Its face is bordered by a pair of white stripes that runs from the eye to the corner of the mouth, which are more distinct than the pale white stripes that run down the face of the red gazelle, an animal commonly confused for it.
Bernardini's racing career began at age three at Gulfstream Park where he finished 4th in a maiden race. After a lung infection kept him from racing for 2 months, he came back with a 7 length win in a Maiden Special Weight over one mile at Gulfstream. On April 29, he easily won the Grade III Withers Stakes prior to going to the Preakness. Bernardini won the 2006 Preakness Stakes by 5 lengths in a time of 1:54.65, in the same race where Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro suffered the hind leg fracture that ultimately led to the Derby winner's death.
Exaggerator is a dark bay or brown colt with a small white star and a white sock on his right hind leg. Bred in Kentucky by Joseph B Murphy, he is from the fourth crop of foals sired by the 2007 Preakness Stakes and Breeders' Cup Classic winner Curlin, whose other offspring have included Palace Malice and Keen Ice. Exaggerator's dam Dawn Raid showed some good form as a two-year-old in 2007, winning two races and finishing third in the Fanfreluche Stakes. She was a great-granddaughter of Bon Debarras, whose other descendants have included the Queen's Plate winner Niigon.
Son of Love was a chestnut horse with a small white star and a white sock on his left hind leg bred in France by the Haras du Hoguenet. He was sired by Jefferson, a British-bred stallion who recorded his biggest win in the 1971 Prix Gontaut-Biron. Jefferson's only other major winner was Marson, who won the Prix Gladiateur in 1979 and the Prix Kergorlay in 1980. Son of Love was the first foal of his dam Mot d'Amour, who went on to produce Taxi de Nuit, who won the Premio Ribot in 1996.
Mac's Imp was a bay horse with a white sock on his left hind leg bred in Kentucky by Brereton C Jones & Rodney P Carothers. As a yearling he was consigned by Jones to the Keeneland September Yearling Sale where he was bought for $25,000 by the British racehorse trainer Bill O'Gorman. During his racing career he was owned by Tamdown Ltd (Michael McDonnell and Tom Mohan) and trained by O'Gorman at Newmarket, Suffolk. O'Gorman had built his reputation by training precociously fast two-year-olds, including Superpower and the 1984 British Horse of the Year Provideo.
Diktat is a brown horse with a white blaze and a white sock on his left hind leg bred in England by his owner Sheikh Mohammed. The colt was initially sent into training with David Loder in Newmarket, Suffolk. Diktat was probably the best horse sired by the outstanding miler Warning whose other progeny included Piccolo, Charnwood Forest (Queen Anne Stakes), Decorated Hero (Challenge Stakes) and Annus Mirabilis (Dubai Duty Free). Warning was a male- line descendant of the Godolphin Arabian, unlike more than 95% of modern thoroughbreds, who trace their ancestry to the Darley Arabian.
Bethrah is a brown mare with a small white star and a white sock on her left hind leg, bred in Ireland by Tullpark Ltd. As a foal in December 2007 she was put up for auction at Tattersalls but was bought back by Tullpark when the bidding stopped at 34,000 guineas. In September of the following year the yearling filly was entered in the Goffs Millian Sale and was bought for €160, 000 by Hamdan Al Maktoum's Shadwell Estate. She was sent ito training with Dermot Weld and was ridden in all of her races by Pat Smullen.
In a metachronal wave gait, only one leg leaves contact with the ground at a time. This gait starts at one of the hind legs, then propagates forward to the mid and front legs on the same side before starting at the hind leg of the contralateral side . The wave gait is often used at slow walking speeds and is the most stable, since five legs are always in contact with the ground at a time. In a tetrapod gait, two legs swing at a time while the other four legs remain in contact with the ground.
From observation, when Cantuaria leap out of their burrow to catch prey, they always grasp onto the edge of the hole with their hind leg to prevent the door from closing. Researchers have been successful at luring and capturing Cantuaria using a tethered mealworm (Tenebrio molitor) beetle, which is quicker and causes much less environmental damage than digging the spider out of its burrow. These spiders are very sedentary, usually only sitting in their burrows waiting for a passing victim. They operate in a constant low temperature because they are underground, and they live for about 20 years.
Prestige was a bay horse with a white star and a white sock on his right hind leg bred in France by Jules Ravaut. He was the best horse sired by Le Pompon, a successful racehorse whose wins included the Prix de Condé in 1893 and the Prix de Fontainebleau in the following year. Prestige's dam Orgueilleuse was a granddaughter of the British broodmare Freia, whose other descendants have included Dunaden, Blue Wind and Bollin Eric. When Ravaut died, the colt entered the ownership of the American William K. Vanderbilt and was sent into training with William Duke in France.
This position restricts the movement of the hindlimbs along a forward-backward or parasagittal axis. Muscles that attach to the side of the leg in crocodilians would have attached to the back of the leg in Stratiotosuchus, enabling a powerful backward extension of the hind leg. The arm socket faces backwards and downwards from a bone in the shoulder girdle called the coracoid, suggesting that the arms were held beneath the body. The large articular surface on the head of the humerus implies that the arms had a wide range of movement, but restricted to a parasagittal axis.
Elizabeth I was also fond of the entertainment; it featured regularly in her tours. When an attempt was made to ban bear-baiting on Sundays, she overruled Parliament. Robert Laneham's letter describes the spectacle presented by Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester at Kenilworth Castle in 1575: A painting of about 1650 by Abraham Hondius of a bear-baiting Variations involved other animals being baited, especially bulls. Bull-baiting was a contest which was similar to bear baiting in which the bull was chained to a stake by one hind leg or by the neck and worried by dogs.
He drew away in the closing stages to win by four lengths from Reach the Crown who finished just ahead of Antonio Barows, Nakayama Festa, Apres Un Reve and Schon Wald. The result was well-received by the crowd partly as the popular veteran Yokoyama was winning the race for the first time. It was hoped that the colt would return in autumn but he developed a muscular problem in his right hind leg and missed the rest of the season with injury. In the JRA Awards for 2009 he was named champion three-year-old colt, taking 237 of the 287 votes.
Coronation was a bay mare with a white blaze and a white sock on her right hind leg, bred by her owner Marcel Boussac at his Haras de Fresnay-le-Buffard in Neuvy-au-Houlme in Lower Normandy. Coronation raced in the Boussac colours of "orange jacket, grey cap" and was trained at Chantilly by the former jockey Charles Semblat. Coronation's sire Djebel, also bred and raced by Boussac, won the 2000 Guineas in 1941 and the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe two years later. He went on to become Leading sire in France on four occasions, and sired many important winners including My Babu, Galcador and Arbar.
Moore raced Oklahoma Star all over Oklahoma, matching him against all comers, usually riding the horse himself because of fears that the opposing side would bribe the jockey. Because Moore was almost fifty years old and weighed about 150 pounds, this meant that Oklahoma Star didn't always win every race, but he won enough. Ronald Mason, who later owned the horse, told Robert Denhardt that the best race distance for the stallion was an eighth of a mile. Oklahoma Star was a mahogany bay in color, with just a white star on his forehead, a small white spot on his left foreleg, and a white sock on his left hind leg.
Luth Enchantee was a lightly built chestnut mare with a white sock on her right hind leg, bred by her owner Paul de Moussac at his Haras du Mezeray near Ticheville. She was from the second crop of foals sired by Be My Guest, an American-bred stallion who won the Waterford Crystal Mile when trained in Ireland by Vincent O'Brien. Be My Guest's other offspring included Assert, Pentire Go and Go and On The House. Luth Enchantee was trained at Chantilly by John Cunnington a Frenchman of British descent and was ridden in her most important races by the French jockey Maurice Philipperon.
Zoffany is a bay horse with a small white star and a white sock on his right hind leg bred by Epona Bloodstock at the Croom House Stud in County Limerick. As a yearling in October 2009 the colt was consigned to the Tattersalls sale and was bought for 220,000 guineas by the Coolmore Stud's John Magnier. The colt was sent into training with Aidan O'Brien at Ballydoyle. Like many Coolmore horses the details of the colt's ownership changed from race to race: he sometimes raced in the colours of Michael Tabor, while on others he was described as the property of a partnership between Tabor, Smith and Susan Magnier.
Little Wolf was a "strong, close-coupled, quite attractive" chestnut horse with a broad white blaze and a white sock on his left hind leg bred by his owner Lord Porchester. Porchester, later the 7th Earl of Carnarvon, owned the Highclere Stud and served as racing manager to Queen Elizabeth II from 1969. Little Wolf was from the second crop of foals sired by Grundy, an outstanding racehorse who won The Derby and the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes in 1975. Grundy sired several other good winners, but his stock tended to be slow- maturing stayers and he was sold and exported to Japan in 1983.
Bubble Gum Fellow began his second season in the Grade II Fuji TV Sho Spring Stakes (a major trial for the Satsuki Sho) over 1800 metres at Nakayama on 24 March and won from Cheers Silence and Cash Lavora. The colt then suffered from a serious injury to his right hind leg and was of the racecourse for five months. In his absence Ishino Sunday won the Satsuki Sho, whilst the Tokyo Yushun fell to Fusaichi Concorde. Bubble Gum Fellow eventually returned for the Grade II Mainichi Okan at Tokyo on 6 October, a race which saw him matched against older horses for the first time.
Duramente is a bay horse with a white coronet marking on his left hind leg, bred in Japan by Northern Racing. His sire, King Kamehameha was one of the best Japanese colts of his generation, beating a field including Heart's Cry and Daiwa Major in the 2004 Japanese Derby. His other winners as a breeding stallion include Lord Kanaloa, Rose Kingdom, Belshazzar (Japan Cup Dirt), Rulership (Queen Elizabeth II Cup), Apapane and Rey de Oro. Duramente's dam Admire Groove was a top-class racemare who twice won the Queen Elizabeth II Commemorative Cup and was voted the Best Older Filly or Mare in Japan in 2004.
Thor takes his hammer Mjöllnir, raises it, and blesses the goat skins. Resurrected, the goats stand, but one of the two goats is lame in the hind leg. Noting this new lameness, Thor exclaims that someone has mistreated the bones of his goats; that someone broke the ham-bone during the meal the night before. Third notes that there is no need to draw out the tale, for: > :Everyone can imagine how terrified the peasant must have been when he saw > Thor making his brows sink down over his eyes; as for what could be seen of > the eyes themselves, he thought he would collapse at just the very sight.

Other species include Fuzzles, Meeps, and Gabbits. The Vykkers are purple, hairless humanoids with four arms and four legs; Interns resemble Vykkers, but have only two sets of limbs; and Big Bro Sligs are bigger and more powerful versions of the original Sligs. The Fuzzles are small, furry, spheroidal predator-scavengers; Meeps resemble sheep, but with only one limb and one eye; and the Gabbit is an amphibian species whose single hind leg serves as both feet and flukes.
Connaught Bridge was a chestnut mare bred in Ireland by the Burton Agnes Stud. She had a number of white markings including a long white stocking on her right hind leg, white socks on her other feet, a large, diamond-shaped white star and a large white patch above her left nostril. She was from the fifth crop of foals sired by Connaught, a talented but temperamental horse who finished second in the 1968 Epsom Derby before winning the Eclipse Stakes in 1970 and two editions of the Prince of Wales's Stakes. Connaught Bridge's dam Fishermans Bridge was a talented racemare who finished second in the Nassau Stakes in 1973.
After a break of over four and a half months, Lucky Lilac returned for the Shuka Sho over 2000 metres at Kyoto Racecourse on 14 October. Plans to give her a warm-up race had been shelved after she sustained an injury to her right hind leg. Ridden by Yuichi Kitamura she was the second choice in the betting but failed to reproduce her best form and came home ninth of the seventeen runners. In the official ratings for Japanese three-year-olds Lucky Lilac was rated alongside Lily Noble and Mikki Charm as the second-best three- year-old filly of the year, thirteen pounds behind Almond Eye.
Despite a difficult start in adjusting to a new school and trying to make friends, Clay soon finds comfort and friendship with his new dog, a border collie named Sheeba. He also makes friends with two of the kids from his school, a girl named Kristen and a boy named Amir. When bitter tensions between Clay and Wax mount, Clay finds himself in some serious trouble. Wax eventually steals Sheeba and takes the dog to his father’s land, but when Clay arrives to get his dog back, they are both chased off and separated when Wax shoots Sheeba in the left hind leg with his father’s rifle.
Aids: The rider applies the outside leg slightly further back from its neutral position, thereby activating the horse's outside hind leg, while adding the inside rein aid to indicate the direction of travel. This technique is later refined, first asking with the outside leg aid before adding the inside rein and a push with the inside seat bone. The refined sequence usually makes for a quicker and more balanced depart, and prepares the horse for use of the inside lateral aids. Purpose and Drawbacks: An intermediate step, this is the most commonly used sequence of aids by amateur riders, and is usually the one taught to beginners.
Medicean was a chestnut horse standing 16.1 hands high with a narrow white blaze and a long white sock on his left hind leg bred and owned by the Newmarket-based Cheveley Park Stud. He was sired by Machiavellian, an American-bred, French-trained racehorse who was one of the leading European two-year-olds of his generation, winning the Prix Morny and the Prix de la Salamandre in 1989. He later became a very successful breeding stallion, siring leading winners including Almutawakel, Street Cry and Storming Home. Medicean' dam Mystic Goddess was a successful racehorse whose wins included the Sweet Solera Stakes in 1992.
In January 1951, Hill Prince sustained a broken bone in his right hind leg when being prepared for the Santa Anita Maturity and was forced to miss the first eight months of the season. In September, he returned to run third in an allowance race at Aqueduct Race Track and then carried top weight to a five length victory in the New York Handicap at Belmont. In the following month Hill Prince failed to repeat his win in the Jockey Club Gold Cup when he was caught close to the finish and narrowly beaten by Counterpoint. A week later, Hill Prince again finished fourth to Call Over in the Trenton Handicap.
Kissing Cousin was a bay mare with a small white star and a white sock on her left hind leg bred in Ireland by her owner Sheikh Mohammed. She was from the first crop of foals sired by Danehill a sprinter who won the Cork and Orrery Stakes and the Haydock Sprint Cup in 1989. Danehill went on to become and exceptionally successful breeding stallion producing the winners of more than a thousand races, including one hundred and fifty-six at Group One/Grade I level. Among his best offspring are Duke of Marmalade, Dylan Thomas, Rock of Gibraltar, George Washington and North Light.
Bahamian Pirate was a chestnut gelding with a broad white blaze and a white sock on his right hind leg bred in Kentucky by Trackside Farm & Liberation Farm & G A Seelbinder. He was sired by Housebuster who was voted the American Champion Sprint Horse in 1990 and 1991. He stood as a breeding stallion in the United States, Argentina, New Zealand and Japan with mixed results: the best of his other progeny were probably Electronic Unicorn (Hong Kong Horse of the Year in 2002) and Morluc (Woodford Stakes). Bahamian Pirate's dam, Shining Through, was an unraced daughter of the 1981 Canadian Horse of the Year Deputy Minister.
Barbaro (April 29, 2003 – January 29, 2007) was an American Thoroughbred racehorse who decisively won the 2006 Kentucky Derby, but shattered his leg two weeks later in the 2006 Preakness Stakes, which ended his racing career and eventually led to his death. On May 20, 2006, Barbaro ran in the Preakness Stakes as a heavy favorite, but, after a false start, he fractured three bones in and around the fetlock of his right hind leg. The injury ruined any chance of a Triple Crown in 2006 and ended his racing career. The next day, he underwent surgery at the New Bolton Center at the University of Pennsylvania for his injuries.
Don John was a bay horse standing 15 hands three inches high with a white sock on his left hind leg. He was bred by Mr Garforth and sold as a foal for 140 guineas to Robert Ridsdale and at Ridsdale's dispersal sale in 1836, the yearling was bought by George Stanhope, 6th Earl of Chesterfield. Lord Chesterfield, however, was listed as the colt's breeder in the General Stud Book, and the exact relationship between Chesterfield's racing interests and those of the Ridsdale brothers was somewhat unclear. Lord Chesterfield sent Don John into training with John Scott who trained forty classic winners at his base at Whitewall stables, Malton, North Yorkshire.
Colombo, a large, powerful, lop-eared horse with a "raking, effortless stride" was bred by the shipping magnate Sir Alec Black. He was bay with a white star, a white sock on his left foreleg and a white coronet on his right hind leg. Shortly after Colombo was foaled, Black decided to sell off his bloodstock and the colt was bought relatively cheaply for 510 guineas by Lord Glanely at Doncaster in 1932. Colombo was sired by Manna, the winner of the 2000 Guineas and the Epsom Derby, out of Lady Nairne, a mare who was also bought by Glanely at another one of Black's dispersal sales.
Bright Sky is a chestnut mare with white star and a white sock on her left hind leg bred in Ireland by Dayton Investments, the breeding company of her owner Daniel Wildenstein. After Wildenstein's death in October 2001 the filly was owned by the executors of his estate before passing into the ownership of Ecurie Wildenstein in 2002. She was sent into training with Jean-Marie Béguigné at Chantilly in France and was ridden in most of her races by Dominique Boeuf. She was the most successful horse sired by Wolfhound an American-bred sprinter who won the Prix de la Forêt in 1992 and the Haydock Sprint Cup in 1993.
Mukhadram is a bay horse with a faint white star and a white sock on his left hind leg bred by the Wiltshire-based Wardall Bloodstock. He was from the third crop of foals sired by Shamardal whose wins included the Dewhurst Stakes, Poule d'Essai des Poulains, Prix du Jockey Club and St James's Palace Stakes. Before Mukhadram, his most notable performer was Lope de Vega who won the Poule d'Essai des Poulains and Prix du Jockey Club in 2010. His dam, Magic Tree, bred by Sheikh Mohammed's Darley Stud, finished unplaced on her only racecourse appearance, but was a half-sister to the St Leger Stakes winner Mastery.
Lahib was a brown horse with a white sock on his left hind leg bred in Kentucky by his owner Hamdan Al Maktoum. He was sired by Riverman a French horse who won the Poule d'Essai des Poulains in 1972. As a breeding stallion he was highly successful, being the sire of many important winners including Irish River, Detroit, Bahri, Gold River, River Memories and Triptych. Lahib's dam, Lady Cutlass won three races from seven starts in the United States between 1980 and 1982 and was a half- sister to General Store, whose descendants have included Al Bahathri, Military Attack, Red Cadeaux and Haafhd.
Artist's impressions and skeletal restoration Lagosuchus is known from very incomplete remains (only a hind leg plus a shoulder blade and vertebrae can be definitely assigned to it). However, features of the leg show that it was a lightly built archosaur, and is notable for its long slender legs and well-developed feet - features it shares with certain dinosaurs. These features, as well as comparisons to close relatives, suggest that it could run on its hind legs for short periods, although it probably moved on all fours most of the time. Lagosuchus was likely an agile predator that could use speed to chase its prey and to escape larger predators.
Homing was a bay horse with a white star and a white sock on his right hind leg bred by his owner Lord Rotherwick. He was sired by Habitat, an American- bred, British-raced miler who became one of the leading European stallions of the 1970s and 1980s. His other progeny included Habibti, Marwell, Rose Bowl, Flying Water and Sigy and he was the British Champion broodmare sire on three occasions. Homing's dam, Heavenly Thought was a successful racemare who won the Princess Royal Stakes in 1970 and later produced Water Mill who won the Glorious Stakes and finished second when favourite for the 1980 St Leger.
Chestnut The chestnut, also known as a night eye, is a callosity on the body of a horse or other equine, found on the inner side of the leg above the knee on the foreleg and, if present, below the hock on the hind leg. It is believed to be a vestigial toe, and along with the ergot form the three toes of some other extinct Equidae. chapter 2 Darren Naish dissents from this belief, noting that the chestnut is "not associated with the metacarpus or metatarsus, the only places where digits occur." Chestnuts vary in size and shape and are sometimes compared to the fingerprints in humans.
After an absence of almost four months, Brown Panther returned on 13 September to run for the third time in the Irish St. Leger at the Curragh. He started the 13/2 joint fourth-choice in the betting behind Order of St George (Irish St. Leger Trial Stakes), Forgotten Rules (British Champions Long Distance Cup) and Agent Murphy (Geoffrey Freer Stakes). Brown Panther disputed the early lead before settling in second place but began to struggle at half-way and was pulled up by Kingscote six furlongs from the finish. A veterinary examination revealed a double fracture of the right hind leg and the horse was immediately euthanised.
Speedy Boarding is a dark bay mare with a large white star and a white sock on her left hind leg bred by the Hampshire-based Meon Valley Stud. In October 2013 the yearling filly was put up for auction at Tattersalls but after failing to reach her reserve price of 95,000 guineas and was retained by her breeder. Like all of the stud's home bred horses she raced in the colours of Helena Springfield Ltd, which are black with white spots and a white cap. She was sent into training with James Fanshawe at Pegasus Stables in Newmarket and was ridden in all of her races by Freddy Tylicki.
Nomadic Way was a small bay horse with a white star and a white sock on his left hind leg, bred in Kentucky by his owner, Robert Sangster's Swettenham Stud. He was from the second crop of foals sired by Assert, who won the Prix du Jockey Club, Irish Derby, Benson & Hedges Gold Cup and Joe McGrath Memorial Stakes in 1982. Assert other good winners including Dancehall (Grand Prix de Paris), Timely Assertion (Santa Anita Oaks), All My Dreams (Deutsches Derby) and Running Flame (Hollywood Turf Cup). Nomadic Way's dam Kittyhawk was a high-class racemare who won the Lowther Stakes in 1981 and the Park Stakes in 1982.
Royal Rebel is a bay gelding with a narrow white blaze and a white sock on his left hind leg bred by Lady Tavistock's Bedfordshire-based Bloomsbury Stud. He was sired by Robellino, a son of Roberto who won the Royal Lodge Stakes and sired several good winners including Mister Baileys (2000 Guineas) and Rebelline (Tattersalls Gold Cup). Royal Rebel's dam, Greenvera was a great-granddaughter of Glaneuse, a broodmare whose other descendants included Gold River and Goldikova. As yearling, Royal Rebel was sent to the Tattersalls sales in October 1997 where he was bought for 145,000 guineas by the bloodstock agent Charlie Gordon-Watson.
Reform was a small bay horse with a white sock on his left hind leg bred by the Ballymacoll Stud in County Meath, Ireland. He was one of the best horses sired by the Queen's stallion Pall Mall, who won the 2000 Guineas in 1958. His dam, Country House, bred by Dorothy Paget, was a granddaughter of Coventry Belle, a sister of the 1000 Guineas and Oaks Stakes winner Godiva. Country House won three minor races before becoming a highly influential broodmare: apart from Reform, her descendants include The Derby winner North Light and the 2000 Guineas and King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes winner Golan.
The muscles which extend the lower leg are called extensor muscles, while the flexion of the lower leg joints is achieved through movement of the flexor muscles. There are five main muscles and muscle groups in the hind legs. The vastus muscle flexes the hind leg and runs from stifle to hip, while the gluteal muscles, the large muscles in the hip, extend the femur. Forward motion and flexion of the hind legs is achieved through the movement of the quadriceps group of muscles on the front of the femur, while the muscles at the back of the hindquarters, called the hamstring group, provide forward motion of the body and rearward extension of the hind limbs.

The hind leg of a kangaroo Kangaroos and wallabies have large, elastic tendons in their hind legs. They store elastic strain energy in the tendons of their large hind legs, providing most of the energy required for each hop by the spring action of the tendons rather than by any muscular effort. This is true in all animal species which have muscles connected to their skeletons through elastic elements such as tendons, but the effect is more pronounced in kangaroos. There is also a link between the hopping action and breathing: as the feet leave the ground, air is expelled from the lungs; bringing the feet forward ready for landing refills the lungs, providing further energy efficiency.
This discovery was later explained as part of the evolution of the horse. The "soft as cheese" Mastodon bones at the Paraná River were identified as two gigantic skeletons of Mastodon andium, and mastodon teeth were also identified from Santa Fe and the Carcarañá River. The pieces of spine and a hind leg from Port S. Julian which Darwin had thought came from "some large animal, I fancy a Mastodon" gave Owen difficulties, as the creature which he named Macrauchenia appeared to be a "gigantic and most extraordinary pachyderm", allied to the Palaeotherium, but with affinities to the llama and the camel. The fossils at Punta Alta included a pachyderm tooth which was thought probably came from Macrauchenia.
Jacinth was a big, powerful, good-looking bay mare with a white sock on her left hind leg bred by the stud of the British bookmaker William Hill. She was sired by Red God a successful racehorse in Europe and North America who had a lasting influence on Thoroughbred racing as the sire of the stallion Blushing Groom. Jacinth's dam Jaffa, was a successful racehorse over long distances and a granddaughter of Daring Miss, whose other descendants included Humble Duty and the Poule d'Essai des Pouliches winner Danseuse du Soir. As a yearling in 1969, the filly was sent to the Houghton Sales at Newmarket, Suffolk where she was bought by Sir Kenneth Butt for 16,500 guineas.
Magical is a bay filly with a large white star and a white sock on her right hind leg bred in Ireland by Orpendale, Chelston & Wynatt, breeding companies associated with the Coolmore Stud organisation. The filly was sent into training with Aidan O'Brien at Ballydoyle. Like many Coolmore horses, the official details of her ownership have changed from race to race: she has sometimes been listed as being the property of Derrick Smith, while on other occasions she has been described as being owned by a partnership of Smith, Michael Tabor and Susan Magnier. She was sired by Galileo, who won the Derby, Irish Derby and King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes in 2001.
Darara was a small, lightly built bay mare with a faint white star and a white sock on her left hind leg bred in Ireland by his owner Aga Khan IV. Her sire Top Ville was an Irish-bred, French-trained horse which won the Prix du Jockey Club in 1979. At stud he also sired Toulon, winner of the St Leger Stakes, Pistolet Bleu (Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud), Saint Estephe (Coronation Cup) and Shardari. Her dam Delsy also produced Darshaan, who won the 1984 Prix du Jockey Club and went on to become a leading sire. The filly was sent into training with Alain de Royer-Dupré at Chantilly and usually raced in a sheepskin noseband.
In Ringworld, when Nessus and the expeditionaries are threatened, the Puppeteer defends himself quite effectively: > All in one motion, the puppeteer had spun on his forelegs and lashed out > with his single hind leg. His heads were turned backwards and spread wide, > Louis remembered, to triangulate on his target. Nessus had accurately kicked > a man's heart out through his splintered spine. Another behavioral trait is the coma state, broadly a cognate of the human fetal position–in the same way that ostriches are said to bury their heads in the sand, Puppeteers fold up into a ball, tucking their three legs and two heads underneath the padded cranial bulge.
Light Cavalry was a "big, rangy" heavily built bay horse with a white blaze and a white sock on his right hind leg bred by his owner Jim Joel. He was the only British classic winner sired by Brigadier Gerard, an outstanding racehorse who won seventeen of his eighteen races between 1970 and 1972 including the 2000 Guineas, Champion Stakes (twice), Eclipse Stakes and King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes. Apart from Light Cavalry, his best offspring was probably the Champion Stakes winner Vayrann. Light Cavalry's dam Glass Slipper was a half-sister of the Derby winner Royal Palace and showed good form during a brief racing career, finishing second in the Musidora Stakes.
After the amputation of a front leg, the fruit fly (Drosophila melanogaster) shows immediate changes in body position and walking kinematics that enable it to continue walking. The fruit fly exhibits longer-term adaptations as well. Researchers found that immediately after amputating a hind leg, flies favored turning away from the side of the injury, but that after several days this bias went away, and the flies turned left and right evenly, as they had before the injury. These researchers compared flies with functioning versus impaired proprioception — the body's sense of where it is in space — and found that without proprioception, flies did not exhibit the same recovery from a turning bias after injury.
Starborough was a "well-made, medium-size" chestnut horse with a white blaze and a white sock on his right hind leg bred in England by his owner Sheikh Mohammed. He was sired by Soviet Star, an outstanding sprinter-miler whose wins included the Poule d'Essai des Poulains, Sussex Stakes, Prix de la Forêt, July Cup and Prix du Moulin. Soviet Star later became a very successful breeding stallion, siring major winners including Freedom Cry (Prix d'Harcourt), Starcraft, Ashkalani (Poule d'Essai des Poulains, Prix du Moulin), Soviet Line, Limpid (Grand Prix de Paris) and Pressing (Premio Roma). Starborough's dam Flamenco Wave was a lightly-raced but high-class racehorse who won the Moyglare Stud Stakes in 1988.
Roaring Riva was a "strong", "rangy" bay horse with a white star and a white sock on his right hind leg, bred in England by the Newsells Park Stud. As a yearling he was put up for auction and sold for 15,000 guineas. He entered the ownership of Billy Gaff, the former manager of Rod Stewart (and founder of Riva Records), and was sent into training with Ray Laing at his Delamere House stable at Lambourn. Laing trained horses for many other people in the pop music industry including Chris Wright and Dave Robinson: his training yard was also visited by George Martin, Alvin Stardust, Liza Goddard and Robert Morley and was described as Berkshire's answer to Annabel's.
Le Marmot was a bay horse with a white sock on his right hind leg bred in France by the Marquis de Talhouet Roy. He was by far the best horse sired by Amarko, who finished second in the Prix d'Harcourt and several major prizes on French provincial tracks including the Grand Prix de Bordeaux and the Derby de l'Ouest. Le Marmot's dam Molinka also won several races in the French Provinces and was a granddaughter of Sanelta, who produced the Prix du Jockey Club and Grand Prix de Paris winner Sanctus. As a yearling, Le Marmot was sent to the sales and was bought for 205,000 francs (approximately £24,200) by Rodolph Schafer.
Able Friend is a chestnut gelding, with a white sock on his right hind leg bred in Australia by Stuart Ramsey's Ramsey Pastoral Co Pty Ltd. He was sired by the Godolphin stallion Shamardal who won six of his seven races in Europe including four Group One events. On his retirement from racing he became a "shuttle" stallion standing in Ireland for part of the year before moving to Australia for the southern hemisphere breeding season: his progeny have included Mukhadram, Lope de Vega, Dan Excel (Singapore Airlines International Cup) and Casamento (Racing Post Trophy). Able Friend's dam Ponte Piccolo was a successful racemare who won the Keith F Nolan Classic in 2005.
Statue of Seaman with Lewis and Clark in St. Charles, Missouri Seaman, a Newfoundland dog, became famous for being a member of the first American overland expedition from the Mississippi River to the Pacific coast and back. He was the only animal to complete the entire trip. He was purchased for $20 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania by Captain Meriwether Lewis while he was in the city awaiting completion of the boats for the voyage in August 1803, for his famed Lewis and Clark expedition. During the expedition, around May 14, 1805, Captains Meriwether Lewis and William Clark performed surgery on one of Seaman's arteries in his hind leg that had been severed by a beaver bite.
When the hind leg is stretched forward and held along the body, it reaches the eye or extends beyond it. Often, a small spine is found behind the edge of the brow-ridge of the eye, and a few enlarged scales are scattered on the sides. Young lizards are olive-brown above, spotted or marbled with brown very similar to the female, but often have a series of large, lozenge-shaped, dark brown spots with pale centres on the back and tail. The adult male is much like P. dorsalis, but in the summer breeding season, the head and anterior part of the body of the males become scarlet or red while the posterior parts are nearly black.
The wolf must give chase and gain on its fleeing prey, slow it down by biting through thick hair and hide, and then disable it enough to begin feeding. After chasing and then confronting a large prey animal, the wolf makes use of its fangs and its powerful masseter muscles to deliver a bite force of , which is capable of breaking open the skulls of many of its prey animals. The wolf leaps at its quarry and tears at it. One wolf was observed being dragged for dozens of metres attached to the hind leg of a moose; another was seen being dragged over a fallen log while attached to a bull elk's nose.
Broadway Dancer was a small bay mare with a white star and a white sock on her left hind leg bred in Kentucky by the Nickols Brothers. She was one of many important winners sired by the Canadian- bred Northern Dancer, who won the Kentucky Derby in 1964 before becoming one of the most successful breeding stallions in Thoroughbred history. Broadway Dancer's dam Broadway Melody, was a high-class racemare who finished second in the Queen Mary Stakes in 1966 and the Jersey Stakes in the following year. Broadway Melody was a half-sister to the dam of the King's Stand Stakes winner African Song and a distant relative of the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe winner Marienbard.
Formidable was a "robust, attractive, strong-quartered" bay horse with two white socks (on his right front and left hind leg) bred in Kentucky by Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. His sire Forli was a champion in his native Argentina before becoming a successful breeding stallion in the United States where the best of his offspring included Thatch and Forego. His dam Native Partner was a successful racemare and a half-sister to Jim French. She went on to become an influential broodmare with her descendants including Ajdal, Noverre, Dance in the Dark and Dance Partner. As a yearling Formidable was offered for sale and bought for $60,000 by the bloodstock agent Ray Barnes.
Teenoso was a dark-coated bay horse with a small white star and a white sock on his left hind leg, bred in Kentucky by Ralph "Budgie" Moller and his brother, Eric, who owned the colt during his racing career. He was described as a bay when racing, but when standing at stud he was described as being "dark bay or brown". Teenoso was the best horse sired by Youth, the winner of the Prix du Jockey Club Washington, D.C. International in 1976. His dam, Furioso, who finished second in the 1974 Epsom Oaks, also produced the racemare Topsy, who finished second in the 1000 Guineas and won both the Sun Chariot Stakes and the Prix d'Astarte in 1979.
Risk Me was a tall, leggy chestnut horse, with a broad white blaze and a white sock on his left hind leg bred in France by Padovest Inc. In 1985 he was consigned to Deauville Yearling sale and was sold for 220,000 francs (£18,600). During his racing career the colt was owned by Lewis Norris and trained by Paul Kelleway at his Shalfleet stables on the Bury Road in Newmarket. Kelleway was a former National Hunt jockey who had great success as a trainer with cheaply-bought horses including African Song, Swiss Maid and Madam Gay He was from the first crop of foal sired by Sharpo, a sprinter whose wins included three consecutive runnings of the William Hill Sprint Championship.
