The site is marked by a placard installed by the Utah State History division. Knolls is also the site of a hazardous waste dump site known as Grassy Mountain. The community is named for the many knolls in the area.

Kory Johnson is an American environmentalist from Arizona. In 1991, while still a young girl, Johnson led a successful effort by Children for a Safe Environment to stop a hazardous waste dump being built in her local area. Part of the project was built on an oil refinery and a hazardous waste dump. In 1994, cancer-causing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons were found at levels 19 times the safe level following testing by the California Department of Toxic Substances Control. Playgrounds and gardening spaces were closed, and a $1.5 million soil removal and cleanup project was required in 2000. The refinery was operated by Amalgamated Oil Company, which was later purchased by Texaco.

The Environmental Restoration Disposal Facility (ERDF) is a waste disposal facility located at the Hanford Nuclear Reservation in Richland, Washington, U.S.. Built in 1996, ERDF collects low-level waste, mixed waste, and other hazardous materials that are generated at Hanford. It does not collect any radioactive waste or other hazardous materials from other sites or the public. The hazardous waste dump was designed to be expanded as needed. The main storage facilities consist of single layer tanks that hold in all more than 17 million tons of nuclear waste.

The Casmalia Resources Hazardous Waste Landfill opened in 1973 as a dumpsite for waste products generated by small- scale oil and agricultural operations. The facility later expanded to accept hazardous wastes like PCBs, solvents and pesticides, becoming one of only two such facilities in the region. Approximately 40,000 gallons a day of toxic liquid waste were sent to Casmalia in the 1980s from Stringfellow Acid Pits, a hazardous waste dump in Southern California that was one of the first Superfund sites in the United States. By 1985, over 50 truckloads a day of toxic waste were being dumped in Casmalia by a variety of generators.

Chem-Dyne is a hazardous waste dump site located on the east side of Hamilton. In 1982, the Justice Department disclosed that the hazardous chemicals at the dump included arsenic, benzene, cyanides, vinyl chloride, naphthalene, chloroform, polychlorinated biphenyls, trichloroethylene and the pesticides aldrin and dieldrin. The Justice Department filed a lawsuit against Chem-Dyne and asked the court to issue an injunction requiring the defendants to help with cleanup as well as to reimburse the government for clearing and safeguarding the site, which the department said had already cost $826,000. The defendants were alleged to have violated the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act and the Superfund Act established to help pay for cleaning up hazardous waste sites.
