While secretly visiting an off-limits power facility in the basement where technician James McCord works, Lincoln discovers a live moth in a ventilation shaft, leading him to deduce the outside world is not really contaminated. Lincoln follows the moth to another section, where he discovers the "lottery" is actually a system to selectively remove inhabitants from the compound, where the "winner" is then used for organ harvesting, surrogate motherhood, and other important purposes for each one's wealthy sponsor, of whom they are clones.

At the same time, she has been having dreams in which she sees entities named the Sun and Moon outside the Shield; these celestial bodies are mostly legend in the world, but there is a belief that the tides seen in the world's seas are caused by the effects of their gravity, which is able to pass through the Shield. Aiah learns that her dreams have similarities with the teachings of a mysterious monastic order in Caraqui, the Dreaming Sisters. At the novel's conclusion, Aiah seems to join the Dreaming Sisters in their curious form of meditation as a way of discovering what her dreams mean in the context of freeing the world from the Shield.

Ethan was first introduced in the second-season episode "Halloween" as the seemingly benevolent owner of a costume shop. Ethan curses his costumes in the name of the Roman god Janus, so that the wearer becomes whatever they are dressed as. Later that season, in the episode "The Dark Age", Ethan has been having dreams of Eyghon, and the fate of the others who wear The Mark of Eyghon, which acts as a beacon for the demon to locate them, kill them, and possess each corpse in turn to hunt his next victim with. Ethan knocks Buffy unconscious, and tattoos the Mark of Eyghon on the back of her neck and removing his own.

He was deeply affected by the book and spent "about three days crying", having dreams of traveling back in time and saving her.

In college, he played basketball with the Charlotte 49ers as a freshman in the 2012–13 season. Then, he transferred to USC and played two seasons, 2014–15 and 2015–16, and transferred again as a senior to Grand Canyon Antelopes men's basketball and played for them in the 2016–17 season. When he was in USC, he used to hang out a lot with the USC football team and said he began to miss it, he said "I began thinking about football all the time, and then I began having dreams, where I was playing football very vividly". Before he went to Grand Canyon, he seriously considered joining the USC football team, but had shoulder surgery so he played his last season at Grand Canyon.

Being the only ones unaffected, Megumi and Hime infiltrate the dream world with Grell and En-En to confront Maamu, only to wind up getting captured. Yumeta explains Maamu had been trapping children inside the dream world so they wouldn't leave and forget about him upon waking up, leaving them with the key to escape. Showing Yumeta the dreams the other Cures are having, the girls show him that the important thing about having dreams is to fulfil them with your own power. As Maamu sends nightmares to attack Megumi and Hime, the other Cures realize the importance of fulfilling their own goals and, with help from the power of the Miracle Lights, break free from their dreams and join the battle.

Eric Walker (Tim Taylor) along with his oldest brother Donte Walker (Kurt Matthews) and their friend Loco (D.C. Scorpio) are drug dealers who have a small-time operation selling crack on the corners of Talbert Street in their Anacostia neighborhood in Southeast, D.C. On the street corners, they have to worry about muggers such as 11:30 (a mentally- deranged stick-up kid who's served time in St. Elizabeths Hospital and who's fascinated with killing street thugs and then hurrying home to watch the aftermath on the 11:30 nightly news.) Eric's youngest brother Michael (Jerry Cummings) is different from the older brothers and is more focused on perfecting his skills in hip-hop and go-go music, along with having dreams of receiving a major record deal. Their mother (Henri Edmonds) is very protective of Michael and doesn't want him going in the same direction as his two older brothers (Eric and Donte) who have become entrenched in the extremely violent drug-infested streets, during a time when D.C. was labeled the "Murder Capital of the United States". As a result, she keeps him on a very tight-leash, so overbearing that Michael feels like he's imprisoned.
