Mitch finds a girlfriend and soon forgets the group; Patrick moves to Texas, then to Japan; Kyle joins the wrestling team and soon puts Scott down for having a crush on Julia. Julia's boyfriend, Vernon, later beats up Scott after finding out from Kyle (who lost a fight with Scott) that Scott has a crush on his girlfriend. Scott realizes that what a person says and does can affect the life of another after Mouth attempts to commit suicide. Later, he learns that not everything is what it seems once he finds out that his older brother, Bobby, who is struggling to find a job, can barely read.

Ivarsson found Roxy Music and their song "Love Is the Drug" a big inspiration; references to this song and Bryan Ferry can be found in The Sounds' single "Rock 'n' Roll". Depeche Mode and Bruce Springsteen were popular when she was young and she found the Depeche Mode song "My Secret Garden" particularly mesmerizing until her brother translated the lyrics for her (she did not yet speak English), at which point she refused to listen to the rest of the translation. She had also admitted to having a crush on Billy Idol when she was a child. The band has been likened to Blondie.

She keeps a journal documenting their forced sabbatical in addition to drawing sketches of the Turtles. She grows extremely close to the four brothers: Michelangelo, who initially confesses to having a crush on April, later addressing her as "Sis," indicating the role she has come to occupy in the Turtles' family. During their respite, April also develops a kind of love-hate relationship with Casey Jones. By the end of the film, she accepts her attraction to him and in the aftermath of Shredder's defeat as well as getting her job back (she had been fired earlier in the film), April asks Casey for a kiss.

Henry's family is long-lived, his siblings all being well into their 90s. When not dining on fast food, Kinsey eats regularly at a local tavern, run by flamboyant Hungarian Rosie, who, in the course of the stories, marries Henry's hypochondriac brother, William. Kinsey has had several relationships in the series, beginning with Charlie Scorsoni, then Jonah Robb, a police officer, and Robert Dietz, another private eye, until the later novels in which she began an affair with longtime friend Cheney Phillips, a police detective.

Not all reviewers agreed, however: Futterman called Mirren's vocal cameo "bizarre", and although Kubicek thought Mirren was "pretty darn hilarious", he said the "Becky having a crush on Artie" story arc made him feel "as uncomfortable" as the members of New Directions, and stated, "It's easy to say that everyone should just treat her like they treat everyone else, but actually doing it is somewhat problematic." The cameo appearance of NeNe Leakes as Coach Roz Washington received plaudits from most reviewers. Poniewozik described her as "pretty damn excellent", and Votta wrote, "She only has one generally pointless scene but is arguably the best part of the whole episode." Raymund Flandez of The Wall Street Journal said Leakes "does well", and Bell stated "she actually wasn't that bad".

Peppermint Patty frequently plays lovers' games with Charlie Brown, and gets frustrated or even angry when he does not take the bait; he does like Peppermint Patty, but only as a friend (though their friendship is occasionally strained by her strong personality and bossiness toward him). Originally, Peppermint Patty played reverse psychology; she would often say, "You kind of like me, don't you, Chuck?" when it was clear that it was Peppermint Patty who had the crush on Charlie Brown, while he not only did not have a crush on her, he also did not quite know what to make of her. His true love was the unattainable Little Red-Haired Girl, and having a girl actually like him was unexplored territory, although Peppermint Patty once angrily expressed her jealousy to Charlie Brown for his affection of that girl. Patty frequently denied having a crush on Charlie Brown at first, writing him off as too wishy-washy and because she "could strike him out on three straight pitches", and during a game of Ha-Ha Herman crudely insulting him when she thought he was not listening.
