At the Pro-Life Women's conference the practical application of this "pro-women" philosophy was not about speaking to press, but for "sidewalk counseling," meaning, standing outside of abortion clinics and trying to convince women not to have an abortion, or to obtain their non-abortion services at a federally qualified health center or crisis pregnancy center, in order to deprive Planned Parenthood of business.
Despite assurances from anti-abortion groups that their commitment is to protecting pregnant women, not jailing them, those organizations have rarely, if ever, opposed arrests of pregnant women — whether the woman was one of the approximately one million who have an abortion, the one million who experience miscarriages or stillbirths, or one of the four million women who go to term each year in the United States.
Republican pundits can try to sugarcoat the outcome all they want (yes, there are local circumstances here that made a difference, including the incumbent congressman resigning because he asked his mistress to have an abortion!) but clearly, in race after race, suburban areas are swinging away from the GOP because some voters, even in the midst of a great economy, aren't happy with President Donald Trump's bearing in office.
Add his on-again, off-again relationship with a woman's right to choose to have an abortion, his role in passing a crime bill that led to millions of mostly black and brown incarcerated bodies, and his vote to gut welfare mercilessly kicking mothers with low incomes off assistance, among a lengthy list of additional issues, and for me, the answer is yes, this is disqualifying and I don't think he should run.
