McNamara claimed that Reggie was in the wrong line of work with his attitudes towards white bosses. McNamara would at one point help a black gypsy cab driver file a harassment claim against Reggie in the hopes of having Reggie's badge. McNamara blamed the harassment claim on the NYPD's programs that were developed to assist minority citizens, claiming that it was department procedure to take any harassment complaint from a minority citizen seriously, even if it was a minority officer such as Reggie who was being accused of the harassment. Arthur, aware of both McNamara's racism and of his helping the cabbie to write the complaint (Arthur noted the "textbook language" on the complaint), had the 15th's detectives investigate the cabbie to squash the harassment claim.

It was a combination of components of the U-Turn of previous seasons: Double U-Turn combining with Blind U-Turn. Although contestants are typically forbidden contact with known family and friends during the filming (except where such contact is part of a task), James LoMenzo was shown video chatting with his wife during the fourth Pit Stop to receive an update on his father's medical condition. On Leg 7 in Moscow, prior to a task, James & Abba had left their bags, including the latter's passport, in a waiting gypsy cab, but the cab had driven off with their bags by the time they completed the task. They continued the leg, but before they could check in, they were told they had to try to find Abba's passport to continue the Race.

After touring and recording in the studio with H.R. for two years, H.R.'s former band, Bad Brains, went back into the studio with its original band members and released a new album, I Against I. In 1987, Zamora moved to Athens, Georgia to start a new band, Gypsy Cab Company, and immerse himself in the thriving alternative rock and new wave music scene. Two years later, Maureen Tucker, drummer for The Velvet Underground, asked Zamora to play guitar with her in the opening act for Lou Reed on his New York tour across the U.S. and Canada. In 1990, Zamora played guitar in Mo Tucker's band and toured throughout many cities in Europe, including Berlin, Germany, where Zamora lived from 1991 to 2009. In Berlin, Zamora set up a recording studio and played with and produced many bands, some of which were part of the exploding electropop/electroclash music scene occurring in Berlin in the early 2000s.
