What stood out was his failure to defend his own intelligence community or hold Putin accountable for any of Russia's transgressions, be it interference in American elections, his annexation of Crimea and aggression in eastern Ukraine, Russia's support for Bashar al-Assad's murderous policies in Syria, or suspected assassination attempts using a nerve agent against Russian operatives in the UK.
