In 1914 Reverend Kaiseki Kodama arrived in Kona and held services at the former Hanato Store which was located across the street from the present temple. He walked around the entire island twice in order to collect donations to build a temple. The Saturnalia was the dramatic setting of the multivolume work of that name by Macrobius, a Latin writer from late antiquity who is the major source for information about the holiday. Macrobius describes the reign of Justinus' "king Saturn" as "a time of great happiness, both on account of the universal plenty that prevailed and because as yet there was no division into bond and free - as one may gather from the complete license enjoyed by slaves at the Saturnalia." In Lucian's Saturnalia it is Chronos himself who proclaims a "festive season, when 'tis lawful to be drunken, and slaves have license to revile their lords". In one of the interpretations in Macrobius's work, Saturnalia is a festival of light leading to the winter solstice, with the abundant presence of candles symbolizing the quest for knowledge and truth.

Gakayev was born on 8 July 1970 in the village of Kalinovskaya, which is located in the Naur district of Chechnya bordering Mozdok, North Ossetia. He participated in the First Chechen War from 1994-96 - including the early struggle against the pro- Moscow Chechen oppositionEmir Hussein: All Mujahideen accepted Emir Dokku's decision on the Caucasus Emirate with great happiness, Kavkaz Center, 1 September 2008\- fighting in units commanded by the legendary Shamil Basayev. Following the Khasavyurt Accord that ended the first conflict, Gakayev served as deputy commander of the Jundullah Islamic Brigade within the structure of the Eastern Front of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria's (ChRi) armed forces, and he was also named Emir of the local Elistanzhi Jamaat of the Vedeno sector. It was in the fall of 1999 that Gakayev launched a military campaign which continues to this day in the same capacity.

He was one of the most senior field commanders still operating in the North Caucasus prior to his death on 24 January 2013. In July 2011, Caucasus Emirate leader Dokka Umarov named Gakayev his naib (deputy) in the eastern sector of Chechnya, thus resolving the nearly year-long dispute that saw a number of nationalist field commanders break away from Umarov, with Gakayev serving as Emir of Vilayat Nokhchicho. Gakayev was killed by Russian security forces along with his brother Muslim and nine other militants after they were surrounded in the mountains of Vedeno, Chechnya on 24 January 2013.
