Gradian also just won a big grant — $1 million from USAID's Saving Lives at Birth program — to install equipment in four provinces in Zambia, focusing on maternal and newborn health.

In order to pinpoint the hospitals where the UAM would be useful, and distribute it effectively, Gradian works with a number of organizations and, in large part, government ministries of health.

"We knew that the need was insatiable, frankly, given the number of hospitals and the number of countries that experience these challenges," said Erica Frenkel, cofounder and COO of Gradian Health Systems.

Ms. Frenkel, 35, is the chief operating officer of Gradian Health Systems in Manhattan, a nonprofit medical technology company that manufactures and distributes medical devices devised to be used in developing countries where infrastructure is unreliable.

As for what's next, Gradian is working on distributing a second product this fall: a critical care ventilator, which helps patients who can't breathe on their own, and usually requires a power supply and a wall gas supply.

But an innovative device called the Universal Anesthesia Machine (UAM), from nonprofit medical device company Gradian Health Systems, allows health workers in countries like Malawi, Sierra Leone, and Zambia to deliver anesthesia without any electricity, and helps save patients' lives in the process.
