Much of the surrounding area was denuded of significant vegetation, while a large spoil heap stood to the north-east of the house. The Mortlocks found the house cold and impracticable, to ameliorate which William infilled the courtyard and constructed a gable-roofed addition providing an area more easily kept warm during the Lithgow winter.
The village is close to the A403 road that runs from junction 1 of the M48 motorway at Aust to the docks at Avonmouth. Severn Beach with substantial development at Western Approach and new energy recovery centres on the main Severn Road (A403), is now a very busy area with heavy traffic which will be somewhat relieved of congestion when the new M49 junction at Farm Lane (located to the south of the Western Approach Distribution Park and west of the village of Easter Compton) is opened in late 2019/early 2020. The village is currently once again served by buses by 'Stagecoach West' going via Pilning, Easter Compton, Cribbs Causeway], Little Stoke, Bristol Parkway to the University of the West of England Campus.
Negotiations with the Belgian colonial authorities in the Belgian Congo produced an agreement for Northern Rhodesia to build and maintain a 70-km graded laterite road from Mokambo (16 km from the Copperbelt town of Mufulira) to Chembe. Although only used by Northern Rhodesia and with no Congolese settlements except Mokambo on its route, it had border control posts at both ends and traffic drove on the right. By the 1950s the Chembe Ferry had two motorised pontoons able to take the largest trucks, the border posts worked smoothly and the 174-km drive from Mufulira to Mansa could be completed in four or five hours. By comparison the same journey keeping to roads within the country was 1166 km and took at least two days, going via Kapiri Mposhi, Mpika, Kasama and Luwingu.
This stretch of line remains open for freight trains, empty stock transfers to the nearby Central Rivers TMD and occasional diversions, but no longer has a regular advertised passenger service, although one or two trains a day between Birmingham and Derby use this route without stopping instead of going via Tamworth for operational reasons."Passenger Train Services over Unusual Lines 2019" Passenger services used to run north to Alrewas and , but these ceased when the high-level station was closed in 1965. One platform of the high-level station was reopened as the northern terminus of the Cross City Line in 1988 by British Rail, with southbound services to Birmingham, Longbridge and Redditch only. A single track chord connects the low and high level lines at the north of the station, but this is rarely used.
Because of the lack of generation in the North Auckland and Northland region, nearly all of the electricity used in the area must be supplied via transmission lines that run through Auckland, carrying electricity from Otahuhu, and generators in the Waikato region. Prior to the commissioning of the NAaN project, the main route for electricity transmission into the North Auckland and Northland region was through the double-circuit 220 kV Henderson to Otahuhu via Southdown line. This is a high capacity line, rated to operate at 938/984 MVA (summer/winter) per circuit in normal circumstances and slightly higher during contingencies, but restricted to 915 MVA due to constraints at Henderson substation. There were also two double circuit 110 kV lines that run parallel to the 220 kV line via Hepburn Road (Glendene) and Mount Roskill, with one line going via Mangere.
Regensburg was connected to the railway network relatively late; although the first line in Bavaria opened in 1835, it took until 1859 for the Bavarian Eastern Railway (Königlich privilegirte Aktiengesellschaft der bayerischen Ostbahnen) to link this east Bavarian metropolis with Nuremberg and Munich, the first line to be built going via Amberg. In 1860 Regensburg was connected to Passau; in 1873 a direct line to Nuremberg was opened; and this was followed by a connection to Ingolstadt in 1874. The first station building was built between 1859 and 1864 at the southern end of Maximilianstraße to plans by architect Heinrich von Hügel, its great length, twin towers and five-arched portal reflecting the influence of the Italian renaissance. The building was torn down in 1888 and replaced by a new building in the contemporary style of the Gründerzeit.
The Isar Valley Railway used to start at the Südbahnhof, going via München Isartalbahnhof (Munich Isar Valley station) and Großhesselohe Isartalbahnhof railway station towards Wolfratshausen and Bichl. During the planning studies of the second Munich S-Bahn Stammstreck route, one of the several routes considered was the South Ring. However, the South Ring concept was abandoned to be "inefficient" in term of travel time between Munich Hauptbahnhof and Munich Ostbahnhof due to S-Bahn trains stopping at Hauptbahnhof then reverse its direction toward the South Ring or western destinations. When the Munich city council and state government of Bavaria approved the construction of new Munich U-Bahn U9/U29 bypass line in 2019, one of the concepts was building a new "superstation" combining the U-Bahn, S-Bahn, and regional train services to be built at South Ring and Lindwurmstraße.
Falkensee has a railway station on the Berlin-Hamburg railway. Local trains and Regional Express trains stop here at the two outer platforms, both located on siding tracks, so that long-distance trains linking Hamburg and Berlin can bypass on the two middle tracks. Two local stopping trains linking Nauen with Berlin call at Falkensee, one going via the Northern Ringbahn (circular railway) to the tunnel level of Berlin Hauptbahnhof, the other taking the Berlin Stadtbahn cross-city railway, terminating currently (in 1914) at the Berlin Schönefeld Airport The northern side of the Falkensee railway station is the location of the central hub of the Falkensee bus network, and provides a covered stand for hundreds of bicycles. Before the previous war, Falkensee was a stop on the suburban line from Nauen via Jungfernheide to the Berlin Lehrter Bahnhof station, the Berlin terminus of the Berlin-Hamburg railway.
Porvoo is on the route of the E18 road from Helsinki to Saint Petersburg, and the Porvoo Highway (part of the Finnish national road 7) along that route is one of the most important transport connections to Helsinki. Other important road connections are the Finnish Regional road 170 going via Sipoo to Helsinki, which continues from the East Helsinki area to the capital under the name Itäväylä, and the main road 55 leading northwest, via Monninkylä of Askola, to the Mäntsälä municipality. It is currently the largest Finnish municipality without scheduled railway services, since passenger rail services to Porvoo ended in 1981 and freight services in 1990, however proposals exist to link Porvoo to the rail network as part of a new rail line from Helsinki to Kouvola via a tunnel between Pasila and Helsinki Airport. Finland's biggest port by total cargo tonnage is the Port of Kilpilahti (Sköldvik) located on the outskirts of Porvoo.

Bingham's relationship with Houseman having ended, Kirstein and Jones encouraged her to find another heterosexual male partner; however, she was being deluged with letters from Beatrix Lehmann, an actress she had met in Britain and who she had invited to join the Bingham family's 1927 holiday in Scotland where they had been "more than just friends". When her family returned home Henrietta stayed with Beatrix at the home of Rosamond Lehmann, Beatrix's sister, and wrote syndicated articles for U.S. newspapers about the English social scene, later turning to more serious topics such as the treatment of prisoners in European countries. (first of five articles) By the end of the 1920s her father had come to realize, and even tolerate, her sexuality provided that, when in Kentucky, she wore a skirt. On the spur of the moment in 1930, Henrietta bought a Bentley Speed Six Mulliner drophead coupé and she and Beatrix set off on a tour of Europe going via Stockholm to Berlin, Munich and Paris, enjoying the Roaring Twenties night life.
Lanctot (1967), pp. 47–49, 63 Benedict Arnold, passed over for command of the expedition, convinced General George Washington to authorize a second expedition through the wilderness of what is now the state of Maine directly to Quebec City, capital of the province.Lanctot (1967), p. 97 The plan approved by Congress called for a two-pronged attack with 3,000 men under Schuyler going via Lake Champlain and the Richelieu River valley to take Montreal while 1,050 men under Arnold would march up the Kennebec River valley, over the Height of Land and then down the Chaudière River valley to take Quebec City.Morrissey (2003), p. 33 The Continental Army began moving into Quebec in September 1775. Richard Montgomery, heading the American vanguard took Ile-aux-Noix on 2 September 1775. Its goal, as stated in a proclamation by General Schuyler, was to "drive away, if possible, the troops of Great Britain" that "under the orders of a despotic ministry ... aim to subject their fellow-citizens and brethren to the yoke of a hard slavery."Smith (1907), vol 1, p.
