Jungle Hunt was subsequently adapted for play on numerous video game consoles and personal computers. Tarzan Goes Ape was released in the 1980s for the Commodore 64. Martech Games Ltd released Tarzan in 1986 for the ZX Spectrum, among other computing platforms. In 1999, games based on Disney's animated film Tarzan were released for the PlayStation, Windows, and Game Boy Color.

The cartoon starts off as an adaptation of Robert W. Service's poem in spoof of The Shooting of Dan McGrew, complete with a literal depiction of a man with one foot in the grave. But when Dan McGoo turns out to be Droopy, it turns into another Droopy-versus-the Wolf/Wolf-goes-ape-for-the-girl gagfest. The story begins in Coldernell, Alaska--Population 324 and getting smaller--a wild, rough town where gold is king while gambling, drinking, and shooting each other are the major activities. Droopy is "Dangerous Dan McGoo", a lone gambler, whose only love is the girl they call "Lou", played by Red (from Red Hot Riding Hood).

Squirm can be seen as a "revenge of nature" film, a genre which began in early 1970s with films like Frogs and Night of the Lepus. Jaws, the most important film in the genre, spawned "Jawsploitation" movies which attempted to take advantage of its success, but film studies scholar I.Q. Hunter argues that Jaws "merely served to perpetuate the early-1970s genre Quentin Tarantino called the 'Mother Nature goes ape- shit kind of movie'". Muir describes the genre as "eco-horror", commenting that "these films reflected genuine audience trepidation that Mother Nature would not stand for Man's continued pillaging and pollution of the Earth". The film critic Robin Wood, in a discussion of horror films showing the re- emergence of repressed sexual and familial tensions, included Squirm as an example of the "revenge of nature" motif, and argued that the survival of three of the main characters runs "counter to the film's logic" of the unstoppable natural forces that the worms represent.
