As your characters progress, fear, and fatigue start to take its toll, making your survivors less efficient. With a complex system of needs, food and water became critical resources in the game and players had to manage hunger and thirst. During the Spring Festival, Kong Kai goes from near the China-Soviet border at the Wusuli River to Shanghai to spend the night with girls at the Youth Home in Garlic Village. He simply sleeps on the bed with his own quilt; the girls take turns keeping watch of him as he sleeps. Commander Deng and the narrator arrive and interrogate Kai and the girls and they learn that he has not done much but go AWOL. After reports that Kai frequently leaves the barracks for the night, the officers decide to hold an election of “exemplary soldiers” for their men; Kai is not chosen despite all the other squad leaders receiving the honor.

Jinn receives word that Settlement 2 is under attack by the Swarm and sends JD's squad to assist the evacuation. Accompanying them in defending the settlement are Augustus Cole, Clayton Carmine, his niece Lizzie, and Fahz Chutani, JD and Del's former squadmate. It is revealed during the battle that JD, Del, and Fahz had previously been deployed in Settlement 2 to quell a riot, which resulted in the death of civilians and prompted JD and Del to go AWOL. During a heated argument with Del, Fahz reveals that JD gave him the order to open fire on the civilians, causing Del and Kait to lose trust in JD. As the Swarm attacks intensify and threaten to destroy the evacuation convoy, JD orders Baird to fire the Hammer of Dawn prematurely.

Although Falconer begins an affair with the young and beautiful Countess (Astrid Heeren), he is surprised to find the Count of Maldorais Henri Tixier (Jean-Pierre Aumont) encouraging him; in fact, the impotent nobleman hopes the Major will impregnate the Countess so that his line may continue. Meanwhile, Beckman begins to butt heads with Falconer over both the value of the art (in the context of either saving or destroying it in the event of a German assault) as well as Beckman's own unrequited attraction to the Countess, who seems to symbolize the beauty and majesty of the European art that he had studied before the war. The enlisted men seek their own pleasures in the brothel of the nearby town, the psychedelic "Reine Rouge" (Red Queen) run by a mystical madam, while Beckman marvels at the castle's artworks, many of which are stored beneath the castle for safekeeping. Sgt. Rossi, a baker before the war, falls in love with a baker's widow and decides to go AWOL, resuming his pre-war life.
