Dachau Memorial Nandor Glid (12 December 1924 - 31 March 1997) was a Yugoslav sculptor, best known for designing the memorial sculpture at the Dachau concentration camp.

His favourite cyclist is Italian Fausto Coppi. Vacchi also works as the press director for the Swedish Ski Association and as the editor-in-chief of the cross-country skiing magazine Glid.

Sculptured by Nandor Glid, the sculpture named "Menorah in Flames" is erected on a quay along the Danube in the sub-neighborhood of 25th May. The neighborhood is also described in literary works of writers such as Stevan Sremac, Branislav Nušić, Milutin Uskoković and David Alkalaj.

The principal equipment on the FISTV is the Ground/Vehicular Laser Locator Designator (G/VLLD), pronounced "glid". This device obtains precise range information to a lased target. When combined with directional control from an inertial navigation system and vehicle coordinates from the GPS, the system is able to obtain precise coordinates of a designated target. The FISTV also has four SINCGARS radios to track the numerous voice and data radio nets pertinent to fire support operations.

The sculpture commemorates over 10,000 Serbian Jews, the vast majority from Belgrade, who were murdered by SS and Wehrmacht army units or deported to concentration camps during the Holocaust in Serbia. In 1997, Glid began a sculpture for the Holocaust memorial to the Jews of Salonika, which was a variation on the Menorah in Flames, but he died before it was finished. His sons completed it after his death and it was subsequently unveiled in Thessaloniki, Greece.

Aerial photo of the memorial in 2012 Between 1945 and 1948 when the camp was handed over to the Bavarian authorities, many accused war criminals and members of the SS were imprisoned at the camp. Owing to the severe refugee crisis mainly caused by the expulsions of ethnic Germans, the camp was used from late 1948 to house 2000 Germans from Czechoslovakia (mainly from the Sudetenland). This settlement was called Dachau-East and remained until the mid-1960s.

Niven, in collaboration with Paul Clinton, was awarded a prize for one the six best designs in an international competition for the memorial sculpture at the Dachau Concentration Camp, a prize eventually won by Nandor Glid (the son of parents murdered in Auschwitz) in 1967. Niven heard Kate Mosse talking on BBC Radio 4's Woman's Hour about setting up a Women’s Prize for Fiction, and telephoned to offer a cast of a sculpture of hers as a prize. The 3 ft-high original stood in her garden in Jubilee Place, Chelsea, London. The bronze Bessie figurine itself is 7.5 inches high.

This was unsuccessfully contested again in 1972. The removal of the parking and the redevelopment of the area back into an open square was first discussed in 1997, when Thessaloniki became the European Capital of Culture, but was ultimately abandoned due to the high costs of construction an underground parking facility. A Holocaust memorial was created in by Serbian holocaust survivor Nandor Glid 1997, but was only placed in the southern corner of the square in 2006. The monument was defiled twice in 2018, once by Golden Dawn members in January, and once by far-right protesters participating in a Macedonia naming dispute rally.

Glid was a Holocaust survivor who had been a forced laborer and partisan during the war and whose father and most of his family were murdered in Auschwitz. From 1985 to 1989 he was Rector of the University of Arts in Belgrade. After the war, he created a number of monuments memorializing Holocaust victims, including the memorial at the Mauthausen concentration camp and the Dachau concentration camp, for which he won the international competition for the memorial sculpture in 1967. In 1990, the city of Belgrade and the local Jewish community dedicated a memorial sculpture, Menora u plamenu (English: "Menorah in Flames") in the Dorćol quarter, which had been the Jewish quarter of Belgrade.

It was written in February and March 1994, and published as a leaflet, to be later included in the catalogue of their joint exhibition, held in Pančevo in June 1995. “It was created to reduce to a minimum the possibility of shallow stories about our painting”, stated their text of the Manifesto, referring to the history of its own making. Going back to the experiences of the local historical avant-gardes, namely, Zenitism, whose manifesto these artists not only quoted in their own manifesto but even claimed to repeat, they looked for a way to avoid being listed among the “urban section” of “figurative painters”, following the “other line” of former Yugoslav art, who institutionalized those practices within the histories of neo-avant-gardes, of neo-constructivists, conceptual and process art movements, considered to be tendencies of “radical”, as opposed to “soft” modernism. They also did not feel quite comfortable with the concept of “monumental intimism”, which placed them amongst the authors active in the “interspace between high art and the underground”, with Đile Marković and Zoran Marinković, in the close proximity of authors such as Daniel Glid and Jasmina Kalić.
