Jennel (an alley) is local to Sheffield:"Putting SY on the wordmap", BBC, 22 August 2005 it is a variation on the word "ginnel", which is in full versions of the Oxford English Dictionary and is used in many parts of England.

Newlyn is a published poet and anthologist, as well as an academic. Her first collection, Ginnel (Oxford Poets/Carcanet, 2005) concerns her ‘intense local attachment’ to the streets and alleys of Headingley in Leeds, where she grew up. ‘Baking’ was ‘Highly Commended’ by the judges of the Forward Prize and re-printed in The Forward Book of Poetry (Faber and Faber, 2005). Poems from the collection have also appeared in The Guardian, The Independent, The Yorkshire Post, Oxford Today, The English Review, and The Oxford Magazine. A recording of Ginnel, read by Sherry Baines, has been published as a ‘Daisy Book’ CD by the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB).

Clapcott has had exhibitions at Osborne Samuels, Messums and Gallery Oldham. In 1984 Clapcott had a series of solo exhibitions at Salford City Art Gallery, the Stockport War Memorial Gallery and at the Ginnel Gallery in Manchester. She also had a solo show in 2003 at Scolar Fine Art.

The album was reviewed by Richard S. Ginnel at Allmusic who wrote of Previn and Perlman that "the two classical partners actually made a really charming album the first time around" and compared Previn to "...the proverbial bicyclist who took a long sabbatical but never forgot how to ride" writing that he "still had plenty of keyboard invention in his fingers, and his tunes are consistently witty" and Perlman as "..not quite swinging but creating an alluring illusion of jazz feeling". Ginnel credits the album with anticipating "the rash of 'crossover' albums by classical artists that didn't take hold until late in the 1980s. And it remains more enjoyable than the vast majority of its successors".

A number of walls which incorporate quarry waste can still be seen in the locality, especially those on the valley opposite Hove Edge. These walls include a rather splendid set of steps set into the side of the valley, which lead into a small narrow ginnel to permit passage along a public footpath.

At the funeral, Macca serves as one of the pallbearers. For the next few weeks, Macca and his stepbrother Clayton (Callum Harrison) harass Gemma at the kebab shop, demanding free kebabs. Although Gemma refuses, the situation comes to a head in July, when Clayton knocks Gemma unconscious, and stabs Kylie to death. In August 2016, Macca attempts to force Gemma to retract her statement against Clayton when pinning her against the wall of the ginnel.

He finds a traumatised Toyah Battersby (Georgia Taylor) lying in the ginnel, following her rape in April 2001, while out jogging early one morning. Although Jason has had many romances, all of them were short-lived since he has phobia to commitment. He has had many flings with street residents, Candice Stowe (Nikki Sanderson) and Sarah-Louise Platt (Tina O'Brien). He seemed to have settled down with Violet Wilson (Jenny Platt), even uncharacteristically promising to care for her when he thought she was pregnant.

However, when they announce this, Stella reminds Dev of the pain that Sunita caused him and urges him not to rekindle their relationship. Dev, realising that Sunita doesn't love him, tells her that they are finished. Sunita gets drunk and angrily confronts Stella in the Bistro. Later, whilst drinking in her back yard, Sunita sees Karl running down the ginnel and follows him into the cellar of The Rovers, where she finds him setting fire to Jason Grimshaw's (Ryan Thomas) building materials, trying to make it look like an accident in order to frame Jason.

Jed became more suspicious when he later saw Tony talking with Jimmy Dockerson. Tony tried to bribe Jed with a sum of money in the ginnel which Jed accepted but he assured Tony that he wouldn't get rid of him that easily. On Christmas Eve 2008, Jed paid Tony a visit in the Underworld factory, ordering money for evicting him from his home, and continually accused him of Liam's murder. Tony eventually strangled Jed with a piece of lingerie, a gift he had planned to give to his wife, Carla (Alison King).

Max is interviewed by the police, but Callum drugs Sarah, threatening Bethany with the help of Gemma Winter (Dolly-Rose Campbell) to give him a false alibi or he will kill Sarah. The police believe Bethany and the Platts are furious when Bethany announces she lied to the police for Callum. Tony promises revenge and drags Callum into the ginnel and beats him up severely, but he is stopped by Liz McDonald (Beverley Callard). Callum kidnaps Max the following month and shouts at him when he demands to go home.

Also, his adoptive daughter, Tracy Barlow (Kate Ford), is upset that Ken refuses to help her financially, especially when Ken's son Peter Barlow (Chris Gascoyne) threatens to buy her florist shop from her. However, Ken considers helping Peter purchase The Rovers Return Inn, which infuriates Tracy. However, after witnessing Peter arguing with a woman named Chloe Tipton (Jo-Anne Knowles) in the ginnel, Ken invites her inside to find out what is going on. She lies to Ken that she and Peter are having an affair, which is untrue and Chloe simply has an unhealthy infatuation with Peter.

Today West Stockwith is a village with one main street and a few side roads, one cul-de-sac of former farm- workers' houses and another the former vicarage. There are signs still of its industrial past with the well-preserved Water Lanes which allow access from the road to the banks of the River Trent, even via a ginnel under part of one property. The industry related to the River has gone, so too the original work related to the Chesterfield Canal which reaches the Trent at the Basin. This is now the home of river cruisers and narrow boats for hire and for leisure.

Status was important in these urban communities: the grander houses had a wider street frontage and were called 'villas', and some houses were constructed with a small 6 ft deep front garden separating the house from the street. The detailing of the front elevation was important: some houses that had a single bay window on the ground floor whereas others had these windows on both floors. These equally could open onto the street, or onto a garden. In areas where there was a ginnel leading from the street to the alley, the house next to it was built over it at first floor level giving extra bedroom space on the first floor.

Bethany spitefully tells Sarah that Callum has been looking at other women inappropriately, upsetting Sarah and nearly results in the couple breaking up, but Callum talks his way out of the situation. Callum takes photos and videos of Bethany delivering his drugs and pretending to smoke cannabis which he uses to blackmail Sarah when she splits with him over his dangerous lifestyle. After learning that Callum and David's wife Kylie Platt's (Paula Lane) son, Max Turner (Harry McDermott) witnessed Callum beating up Jason in the ginnel, he drugs Sarah and forces Bethany to give him an alibi. Bethany tells the police that she was with Callum in his flat when Jason was attacked.

After previously telling her that he is interested in purchasing the local pub The Rovers Return Inn, Chloe unexpectedly arrives and fakes showing an interest in buying the pub, where Peter is unnerved that Toyah may see her. Peter then threatens Chloe in the ginnel, ordering her to leave him and Toyah alone. However, they have been spotted by Peter's father Ken Barlow (William Roache), who takes Chloe inside and she lies to him that she and Peter are having an affair, so Ken informs Toyah of this, leading to her temporarily moving out. The following night, Peter is close to turning back to alcohol after battling alcoholism previously and declares that Ken is at the heart of all his problems.
