There are a couple of shops around the village mainly general dealers. There also numerous tuckshops (dimausu) around the village. There is equator general dealer which is right in the centre of the village, Mophane general dealer, Sesigo General dealer, Banana General dealer, Sikwa General dealer, Mmadinare general dealer (near the kgotla) and Rrabele. There are also some Chinese shops and a hardware (Bafana Hardware).

There are still many general dealers in South Africa; the oldest is Oom Samie se Winkel () in Dorp Street, Stellenbosch. Oepverkoop is the oldest general dealer in Paternoster, Western Cape. Goodwood Museum in Cape Town displays the operation of a general dealer shop.

General dealer Solitaire is a small settlement in the Khomas Region of central Namibia near the Namib-Naukluft National Park. It features the only gasoline station, bakery, cafe, and the only general dealer between the dunes at Sossusvlei and the coast at Walvis Bay, as well as to the capital Windhoek. Solitaire belongs to the Windhoek Rural electoral constituency. Solitaire is known in The Netherlands because of the book of the same name by Dutch author Ton van der Lee dealing with his stay in this place.

The New shopping centre largely relies on the locals and has two major supermarkets operated by Sibanda and Machingura. Nkayi has one local bakery which was formerly operated by F Maundura but is now operated by Machingura.

Toodyay resident magistrate, Joseph Harris, was of the opinion that two public houses were sufficient. However, Everett persisted and, in 1855, he opened the Queen's Head for business. He advertised himself as a publican, storekeeper and general dealer. A wide range of boots and shoes were offered for sale.

Richard Rennison was born on 29 October 1889 in Shankhouse, Northumberland to coalminer James Rennison and his wife Ann. He spent time working as a "General Dealer" and as a photographer. He also spent time as a Methodist preacher in Tyneside. In 1923, he married Jessie Little in Nicholforest, Cumberland.

There is a newsagent and a Foodstore/General dealer. Newbottle has one school, Newbottle Primary School which has more than 450 students from around the catchment area.

David Henry Jacobs (30 April 1888 – 6 June 1976) was a Welsh-born track and field sprinter. He was the first British Jew to win an Olympic gold medal. He was born in Cardiff, to John Jacobs (previously Yaakov), who was a general dealer from London. His athletics career started in London with Herne Hill Harriers in 1908.

While on a holiday in Windhoek in 1937 he decided to join the management of the family business, which at that time had developed from an ox wagon manufacturing enterprise to that of a general dealer, selling household wares and groceries. Pupkewitz has thus managed the Pupkewitz group of companies for 75 years, from 1937 to 2012.

Everett was born in 1784 at Alnwick in Northumberland. He was the second son of John Everett and his wife, Margaret Bowmaker. Everett's father died when he was young, and the boy soon learned to help his mother. After a short time at a private school in Alnwick, he was apprenticed to a general dealer, where he was given to fun and practical jokes.

Some of the villagers served in the Second World War. In 1946 JGC Williams opened the General Dealer in Webersvallei Road, which closed its doors in 2012 when his sons retired. Jamestown was designated a coloured area under apartheid segregation laws, and the majority of the residents were not subjected to forced removals. The 1970s saw the first tarred road and the arrival of electricity for those who could afford it.

Felton travelled to Victoria on the ship California in 1853 intending to search for gold. In 1857, he was in business in Collins Street, Melbourne, as a commission agent and dealer in merchandise, and in 1859 was an importer and general dealer. In 1861 he was in business in Swanston Street as a wholesale druggist. In 1867 Felton went into partnership with Frederick Sheppard Grimwade and founded Felton Grimwade and Company, "wholesale druggists and manufacturing chemists".

David Dale was born in Stewarton, Ayrshire in 1739, son of William Dale, a general dealer in the village. His date of birth is normally given as 6 January but there is no officially recorded date of birth.National Records of Scotland indicate 1 January but, in the absence of parish documentation, this is simply a computer default date. However, parish records show that he was baptised on 14 January 1739. As a child, he worked with the cattle as a ‘herd laddie’ in very basic conditions.

Max Pupkewitz opened a general dealer business in Windhoek in 1925, the year the rest of the family resettled here. In July 1946, Harold Pupkewitz co-founded M Pupkewitz and Sons. The portfolio at first mainly consisted of building material and farm supplies but was expanded in 1954 with the addition of a furniture shop and a motor car sale business. When Volvo suspended their engagement in Southern Africa because of concerns about the apartheid system, Pupkewitz bought the local Toyota business in 1975.

The first migrants worked as traders, market gardeners, and laundrymen in the rural areas, often setting up stands on white farmers' land. They were eventually driven out of the reserves and into urban spaces by the Land Apportionment Act of 1930. They became predominantly urban communities, opening up general dealer stores in Salisbury, Bulawayo, Umtali, and other smaller towns. Most Indians in Rhodesia were Gujarati, hailing from the same villages. According to the 1921 census, there were 612 Hindus resident in the country, and 231 Muslims (with one Parsee and 113 identifying as ‘other’).

Born in Birmingham in 1855 as Emma Solomon, the daughter of Henry Solomon (born 1831), a general dealer, and later a traveller in jewellery, and his wife Ellen (née Coley), in 1872 she married Thomas Hopkins in Birmingham and had a daughter, Ellen 'Nellie' (born c. 1876). Melnotte made her professional debut in a pantomime at the Theatre Royal in Hull in the mid-1870s. She made her London debut in October 1876 as Fezz in Bluebeard at the Folly Theatre. In early 1877 Melnotte appeared as a Tittlebat-fisher in Richard D'Oyly Carte's operetta Happy Hampstead at the Royalty Theatre.

Charles Alfred "Charlie" Crofts (11 July 1871 - 25 March 1950) was an Australian trade unionist. Born at Bethnal Green in England to general dealer James Crofts and Ann Rebecca, née Luxton, Crofts entered the workforce at the age of twelve, leaving school to work in a sheet metal factory and joining the Tinsmiths, Braziers and Gas Meter Makers' Society of London. He married Agnes Humphreys at Bethnal Green on 6 August 1893. He and his family moved to Melbourne in 1898, where Crofts became a member of the Sheet Metal Workers' Union (SMWU), serving as vice-president (1907) and president (1908-09).

It carries a broad selection of merchandise, sometimes in a small space, where people from the town and surrounding rural areas come to purchase all their general goods. The store carries routine stock and obtains special orders from warehouses. It differs from a convenience store or corner shop in that it will be the main shop for the community rather than a convenient supplement.

His daughter Lady Violet married Cecil John Talbot Rhys Wingfield and was the mother of Edward William Rhys Wingfield (1905–1984). A son, William Turnour Thomas Poulett, had been born to his first wife on 15 December 1849, at Southsea, Hampshire, only six months after their marriage, and Poulett had reason to believe he had been fathered by another man, Captain William Turnour Granville. In 1869, this son had married Lydia Ann Shippey, the daughter of William Shippey, a general dealer. They had one son, William Henry George Poulett (born 1 April 1870), and a daughter, Maud.

Lejwana is a small village with little development, and was rated one of the ten or twenty poorest villages in Botswana in 2015. The people are dependent on farming, with almost each and every household having a piece of land at the back of the house for ploughing (Segotlo, as the local people call it.) There are some farms owned by the 'whites' around the village which employs a number of village residents. Most of the residents live in towns such as Lobatse and Gaborone where they work. Lejwana Village has one shop named Lerothodi General Dealer which has been the core market for the village for many years now.

Meadley was born at Sunderland, County Durham, on 1 January 1774, an only son; his father died in 1775, and his mother soon afterwards moved with her five children to the adjoining town of Bishop Wearmouth. In 1783 he was placed at the grammar school of Witton-le-Wear, under John Farrer. At the end of 1788 he was apprenticed to Thomas Chipchase, a banker and general dealer at Durham, where Meadley became a liberal in politics. Leaving Durham in 1793 he lived at home, learning Italian, improving his French, and founding a subscription library at Sunderland (1795) with the help of Ferrer, by then rector of Sunderland.

A case of counterfeit coinage is reported in September 1908 concerning Joseph Coombs, general dealer, who in company with his friend Boon, entered The Commercial Hotel, Herne Hill, where Boon put down a bad florin payment for drinks, which was immediately recognised by David Torr, a barman at the house, as counterfeit. A 1912 photograph from the Lambeth Council Archives shows the name 'W. Colmer' displayed above the entrance to The Commercial Hotel, and a sign proclaiming "Bass on draught and in bottles". At the Lambeth Police Court on 19 December 1918, William Colmer, licensee of the Commercial Hotel, was summoned for refusing to sell certain whisky to a person duly authorised by the Lambeth Food Control Committee.

He was born in Meppel in the Netherlands on 8 May 1843, the son of Eva (van Minden) and Joseph Henoch Duveen, who were both from Dutch Jewish families. His grandfather, Henry Duveen, who had first settled in Meppel during the Napoleonic Wars, was the youngest son of Joseph Duveen of Giessen, army contractor to the King of Saxony; Napoleon's repudiation of the debts of the Saxon forces ruined this Duveen, whose twelve sons were then driven to seek their fortunes in different countries. Joseph left Meppel in 1866 and settled in Hull, starting as a general dealer. He possessed a good knowledge of Nanking porcelain, then coming into fashion; cargo loads of this had been brought to Holland by the early Dutch traders with China.

Dr Frank Themba Mdlalose was the first Premier of the newly renamed KwaZulu- Natal province in South Africa, after the African National Congress (ANC) won the country's first all-inclusive general election in April 1994. He was born on 29 November 1931 in Nquthu, northern Natal to Jaconia Mdlalose, a general dealer and Tabitha Mthembu, a tutor. He was educated at St Francis High School, Mariannhill, outside Durban. He then attended the Fort Hare University - (alongside future Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) leader Mangosuthu Buthelezi, to whom he is distantly related) - where he obtained a diploma. Mdlalose continued his studies at the University of Natal and in 1958 he obtained his MB Ch B degree and became a resident doctor at Durban's King Edward Hospital.

On the other hand, the insolvent may enforce payment for work done after sequestration because section 23(9) expressly gives him the right to recover this remuneration for his own benefit. A contract made by the insolvent without the trustee's consent, where such consent is necessary, is not void, but it is voidable at the instance of the trustee. This is subject to the qualification that, if an insolvent purports to alienate, for valuable consideration, and without the consent of the trustee of the insolvent estate, any property acquired after sequestration, or right to such property to a person who proves that he was not aware and had no reason to suspect that the estate of the insolvent was under sequestration, the alienation shall nevertheless be valid. The insolvent may follow any profession or occupation, and enter into any employment—except that he may not, without the written consent of the trustee, carry on, or be employed in, the business of a trader who is a general dealer or manufacturer.
